“The first rule of HTML First Club is: you do not talk about HTML First Club.” That joke appears in the Cool Bits list of Bytes #239, published November 13, 2023. It is a small gag in a newsletter whose main feature is about TypeScript 5.3—not a formal HTML methodology or manifesto.

What is HTML First Club?

In issue #239 of Bytes, HTML First Club is the subject of a one-line joke riffing on Fight Club: “The first rule of HTML First Club is: you do not talk about HTML First Club.” The issue places it among its Cool Bits, alongside other developer links. It does not define a club, prescribe an approach to building websites, or present HTML First as a technical framework.

What is the issue actually about?

The main feature is a summary of TypeScript 5.3. The newsletter highlights three kinds of changes:

  • Import Attributes: a language feature covered in the TypeScript 5.3 overview.
  • Type narrowing: improvements to how TypeScript narrows types.
  • Developer experience: changes including inlay hints and performance work.

These are the issue’s descriptions of TypeScript 5.3 in November 2023; they should not be read as a summary of the latest TypeScript release.

What else does Bytes #239 include?

A Web Components teaser

The introduction also points readers to an explainer prompted by the complaint that Web Components do not work like React components. That is a teaser to another piece, not an answer to the technical question within this issue.

A JavaScript debugging exercise

The Spot the Bug exercise features an incorrect odd/even check: it tests for a remainder of 1 while collecting even numbers. The correction checks for a remainder of 0 instead.

A past email-and-calendar event

The issue promoted a Nylas and Granica event scheduled for November 15, 2023, about securely accessing and scrubbing email and calendar data for generative AI training. The date has passed, so this is archival event information, not a current invitation.

Why the title is easy to misread

The phrase “HTML First Club” sounds like it might name a philosophy or technical community, but issue #239 supplies no such definition. Its appearance is a brief joke in the Cool Bits list. The issue’s substantive technical coverage is the TypeScript 5.3 feature summary, with separate links and items on Web Components, debugging, and the historical event.
