Its 2025 results show operating momentum. They do not, on their own, establish that BWXT shares are attractively valued or the best nuclear stock to buy: that judgment also requires a current share price and a comparison with alternatives.
What BWX Technologies does
BWXT is not simply a Navy-reactor company. Its two operating segments serve different customers and markets, which matters when assessing how much of the investment case rests on government work.

Government Operations
Government Operations engineers, designs, and manufactures naval nuclear components, reactors, and fuel for the U.S. Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration’s Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K describes this as a core part of its work, making naval nuclear supply a well-supported starting point for the BWXT story. Commercial Operations and development work
Commercial Operations makes nuclear steam generators, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, reactor components, and containers for spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste. The 10-K also describes advanced reactor and fuel development for government and other programs. These activities broaden BWXT’s exposure beyond naval propulsion, but development work should not be mistaken for a mature, material source of sales unless the company reports that it is.

What BWXT’s 2025 results show
BWXT reported $3.198 billion in revenue, $4.01 in non-GAAP earnings per share, and $295 million in free cash flow for full-year 2025. These are company-reported results, not a forecast. In its February 23, 2026 release, CEO Rex D. Geveden called it “a record year for BWXT.” BWX Technologies’ fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results release.
The results release attributed growth to its businesses and acquisitions, while noting increased capital spending to support growth. That creates a useful distinction for investors: expanding operations can support future revenue, but integration and project execution still have to deliver results and cash.

How to interpret the backlog
BWXT reported a year-end 2025 backlog of $7.3 billion, 50% higher than a year earlier. Management attributed the increase to large, multiyear awards in naval propulsion, special materials, and commercial nuclear power. Backlog can provide visibility into prospective work, but it is not the same as revenue already earned, cash received, or guaranteed profit.
The more detailed 10-K puts the backlog at $7.2607 billion, including $2.1513 billion of unfunded U.S. government backlog. BWXT expected to recognize approximately 40% of backlog revenue by the end of 2026, with the balance recognized afterward. Those figures describe management’s expectations as reported in the filing, not a promise of when every contract will be funded or performed. The filing says contracts may be canceled or modified, and many government contracts depend on annual appropriations.

What management expects in 2026
BWXT’s initial 2026 guidance, issued February 23, 2026, calls for approximately $3.75 billion in revenue, $645 million to $660 million in adjusted EBITDA, $4.55 to $4.70 in non-GAAP EPS, and $305 million to $320 million in free cash flow. These are forward-looking management estimates, not reported 2026 results. The company says it does not provide GAAP guidance because it cannot reliably forecast the items excluded from its non-GAAP measures.
For the investment case, this outlook signals management’s expectation of continued growth. It also depends on execution, contract timing, funding, and the conversion of planned work into revenue and cash. Actual results may differ.

The case for BWXT—and what could weaken it
Why it merits attention
- Established naval work: The 10-K documents BWXT’s role in supplying the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, rather than resting the thesis on a prospective reactor concept.
- More than one market: Commercial components, fuel, services, and related work give the company exposure beyond naval propulsion.
- Growing contracted work: The reported backlog increased 50% year over year, offering a substantial base of work to execute over time.
- Reported cash generation: BWXT generated $295 million in free cash flow in 2025, alongside its reported revenue and non-GAAP EPS.
Risks that belong in the same analysis
- Government funding and timing: Government Operations revenue is substantially influenced by U.S. national-security spending. Appropriations cycles can affect both funding and the timing of awards.
- Unfunded and changeable backlog: The $2.1513 billion of unfunded government backlog is not equivalent to fully funded, immediately executable work. The filing also warns that projects may be canceled or modified.
- Delivery and investment demands: Acquisitions, increased capital spending, and commercial project delivery add execution requirements as the company pursues growth.
- Forecast uncertainty: The 2026 outlook is guidance, and its non-GAAP measures are not GAAP results.
Does that make BWXT a top nuclear stock?
The operating evidence supports calling BWXT an established nuclear supplier with a large, growing backlog and exposure to both government and commercial work. It does not settle whether BWXT is a top stock to buy at a particular price. The 2025 Form 10-K and February 2026 results release do not establish a current share price, valuation multiple, or relative valuation against peers. Without those inputs, calling the shares cheap—or declaring them superior to other nuclear investments—would go beyond the available evidence.
A fair comparison with another nuclear company should use the same dated share-price basis and examine where contracted revenue comes from, how long it lasts, how much backlog is funded, what execution and capital it requires, whether advanced-reactor work is contracted or still developmental, and how much cash the business generates. Until that valuation work is done, BWXT is best described as a strong operating story to evaluate—not a proven top pick at any price.
