Before buying electronics online, verify the exact item and its condition, check who is selling it, read reviews in context, calculate the full delivered cost, understand return and warranty terms, and check safety and payment protections. A marketplace platform is not necessarily the seller, and a low price or high star rating is not proof that a listing is reliable.
1. Does the exact product match what you need?
Write down the features that matter before comparing prices, then check each listing against them. Confirm the model number and specifications, the item’s condition, and what is included—such as a charger, cables, or other accessories. Compare the seller’s description with the manufacturer’s product information when details are unclear. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends identifying must-have features and comparing products before buying (FTC online shopping guidance).

Read the full description and inspect the photos rather than relying on the product title or thumbnail. Terms such as “used,” “refurbished,” “as is,” or “close-out” describe the listing’s condition or sale terms; they do not all mean the same thing. Check what the seller specifically promises about condition and included parts, and ask questions before checkout if the listing leaves important details uncertain. The FTC also advises marketplace shoppers to review the description and photos (FTC marketplace advice).

On a marketplace, distinguish the platform from the business or individual actually selling the item. Find the seller name, profile, contact details, and recent buyer feedback. Search the seller or website name alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Look for a pattern across sources rather than treating one glowing review or one complaint as conclusive.

3. What do reviews actually tell you?
Use reviews as evidence to examine, not a verdict to accept. Read comments on more than one source when possible, and consider who wrote them, where they appear, and whether the reviewer has a history of useful, specific reviews. Compare expert assessments with customer reports if both are available. Pay attention to recurring, concrete observations—such as battery life or build quality—rather than the star average alone.

Compare the total checkout cost, not just the displayed price. Include shipping and any disclosed fees or add-ons, then check the stated delivery date. Save the listing or confirmation showing the delivery promise. A very low price for an expensive branded device can be a warning sign of a counterfeit or stolen product, but price alone does not prove that a listing is fraudulent.

Delivery rights depend on where you live and the circumstances of the sale. For U.S. shoppers, the FTC’s Online Shopping guidance says sellers must ship as promised or provide the required opportunity for a remedy; it also states, “The law requires sellers to ship items within 30 days of the sale.” Treat that statement as U.S.-specific guidance, not a worldwide shipping deadline.
5. Can you return it, get service, or use the warranty?
Before paying, find the return window and the conditions for a refund or exchange. Check who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and how quickly you must open a marketplace claim. A marketplace protection program is not necessarily available for every seller, item, or type of problem; read the terms that apply to this particular purchase.

Check the manufacturer warranty for the exact model and find out who handles service. A seller’s own promise and a manufacturer’s warranty may differ in coverage and process. Under U.S. federal rules, covered written warranty terms must be available before purchase; the FTC outlines those requirements in its Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law. Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office also advises shoppers to check warranty, customer support, and return or exchange policies (shopping for safe products online).

6. Is the product safe, and is checkout protected?
Check recalls and rules where you will use it
Search for recalls or safety notices for the product and check the requirements in the market where it will be used. Safety marks are not universal: Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office says general household electrical, electronic, and gas appliances within its rules must carry a valid SAFETY Mark. UK government guidance says products covered by applicable marking requirements should bear the appropriate marking and the manufacturer’s name and address. Those examples apply to their respective jurisdictions and product rules; check the relevant local authority rather than assuming one mark applies everywhere (Singapore guidance; UK guidance).

Use a safer payment method and keep records
Look for a payment method with a dispute or buyer-protection process, such as a credit card or a protected online payment service. HTTPS means the connection is encrypted, but it does not establish that a seller or website is legitimate. As the FTC puts it in its marketplace advice, “The ‘s’ means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.” Keep a copy of the product description, receipt, order confirmation, delivery promise, and messages with the seller in case you need to make a claim.
