The card is most compelling if your purchases fit those issuer definitions and you can use its eligible benefits.
How the Blue Cash Everyday rewards work
American Express issues cash back as Reward Dollars. Its current card terms list the following rates, each subject to eligible-purchase rules:

These are separate caps: the $6,000 limit applies to each of the three categories, rather than to their combined spending. The issuer lists no annual fee. Rates and terms are from the American Express card page, accessed in 2026.

The 3% rates depend on how a merchant and transaction are classified, not only on what you bought or how you describe the store. American Express sets out the categories in its reward-category terms.

U.S. supermarkets
Superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery services are excluded from the issuer’s U.S. supermarket category. A store that sells groceries may therefore fail to qualify if it is classified as a superstore or another excluded merchant type.
U.S. gas stations
Gas purchases at superstores, supermarkets, and warehouse clubs do not qualify for the gas-station reward category under the terms. The location’s merchant classification can matter even when you are buying fuel.

U.S. online retail
The purchase must be made online from a qualifying U.S. retailer selling physical goods, and the merchant must classify the transaction as an internet purchase. An online order paid for in store does not qualify. The definition also excludes, among other categories, restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, auto dealers, travel, entertainment, services, and phone or mail orders.

Reward terms apply to eligible purchases net of returns and credits. Fees, interest, balance transfers, cash advances, prepaid-card loads, and other specified transactions do not earn rewards. Because merchant categorization controls, check the issuer’s terms rather than assuming a particular retailer or checkout method will earn 3%.

How you can use Reward Dollars
American Express says Reward Dollars can be redeemed as a statement credit, and it also lists redemption at Amazon.com checkout. Redemption choices and conditions are described in the issuer’s Reward Dollars information. Amazon checkout redemption is a way to use rewards; it does not change which purchases qualify for the 3% online-retail category.
Is the monthly streaming credit useful?
The card’s listed streaming benefit offers up to $7 back per month, up to $84 per year, on eligible Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscriptions. Enrollment is required, and the benefit is subject to terms. The maximum annual amount assumes eligibility and use in every month; it is not automatic cash back on all streaming services. Who is likely to get value from this card?
The card is worth considering if you want a no-annual-fee option and regularly spend in the three capped bonus categories. Its online-retail and gas categories can be useful alongside supermarket rewards, while the 1% rate on other eligible purchases is less rewarding than the headline categories. The practical value depends on how much of your spending qualifies before each category reaches its annual cap.

- Potential fit: You make regular eligible purchases at U.S. supermarkets, qualifying online retailers, or U.S. gas stations and can keep track of category limits.
- Less compelling fit: Much of your grocery shopping happens at warehouse clubs or superstores, or your spending is concentrated in categories that earn 1%.
- Benefit-dependent fit: You already pay for an eligible Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscription and are willing to enroll in the credit.
Blue Cash Everyday or Blue Cash Preferred?
American Express frames the choice around the annual fee, reward structure, and spending patterns. The Everyday card has no annual fee and includes online retail and gas among its 3% categories. The issuer’s comparison page describes the broader trade-off, but the figures cited here do not establish a numeric break-even point; confirm both cards’ current fees, rates, caps, and terms before calculating one.

To compare them for your own budget, estimate only spending that qualifies under each card’s definitions, then account for any annual fee and benefits you expect to use. Do not count a benefit at its advertised maximum if you would not otherwise qualify for or use it. See the American Express card comparison for current terms.
Fees and details to check before applying
The official card page lists a 2.7% foreign transaction fee after conversion to U.S. dollars. If you expect to make purchases outside the United States or in a foreign currency, include that fee in your decision and review the issuer’s current terms. The card page also contains the current offer and account terms; any welcome offer, APR, eligibility standard, and complete benefit conditions should be checked there because they are not established here.
