Before taking over a Shopify store, establish who controls it, where its money and domain go, which outside accounts and contracts it depends on, and whether customers can complete the store’s core workflows. Shopify’s ownership-transfer process is only one part of that audit: transferring the store does not automatically transfer every payment-provider account, app subscription, domain registrar account, contract, or business obligation.
1. Confirm who can transfer the store—and who can access it
Start by identifying the current store owner and, if the store belongs to an organization, its organization owner. Shopify says a store can have only one owner, and only the store owner can change or transfer store ownership. An organization owner has broad access but cannot change store ownership unless they are also the store owner. Confirm the roles directly rather than assuming that an organization owner or administrator can complete the transfer. See Shopify’s ownership-transfer guidance.

Then inventory every person and service with access: staff users, collaborator access, apps, sales channels, and connected services. Review role scopes in Shopify’s store permissions reference and roles documentation. Pay particular attention to permissions that can affect payments, billing, customer information, apps, domains, or custom pixels. Record who needs access after closing and remove or revise access that should not continue.

Compare the store’s contact and notification details with the buyer’s intended business identity. Review Shopify bills and app charges, noting who pays each one and whether any balance or bill remains outstanding. Shopify’s transfer guidance says a new owner may be responsible for bills below the seller’s billing threshold at the time of transfer, so the parties should clarify those amounts before closing and preserve relevant billing records.
#1 Best Overall
For every active payment method, verify the payout destination and the identity details behind it. Shopify specifically calls out updating the bank account and tax details for Shopify Payments, as well as changing or transferring associated third-party payment-provider accounts. Do not assume that changing Shopify store ownership changes an external provider’s account holder, bank details, or contractual relationship. Record payout history and confirm who will resolve transactions or disputes that cross the handover date. The applicable steps are in Shopify’s transfer checklist.
3. Verify the domain, registrar and DNS
Check that the buyer can access the account at the domain’s registrar, that the account’s contact details are current, and that someone is responsible for renewals. Record custom DNS entries used for business email, verification, or other services so they are not accidentally lost during a change.

Connecting a domain to a Shopify store and transferring ownership of the registrar account are different actions. Shopify’s checklist says a custom domain purchased for the store must also be transferred to the new owner, while its domain guidance explains domain ownership separately. The parties should specify exactly which domain and registrar account are included in the deal, rather than treating a working storefront URL as proof of registrar control. Consult Shopify’s domain ownership guidance and its transfer instructions.
4. Map apps, integrations and outside obligations
Make an inventory of installed apps, sales channels, and integrations. For each one, document what it does, who pays for it, what data it can access, what store processes depend on it, and whether a separate account must be transferred or reauthorized. Shopify permissions are scoped, but the reviewed guidance does not establish a universal app-risk score; assess access and business impact app by app.
Also list people and organizations the business relies on: staff, fulfillment providers, payment processors, and other third parties. Identify contracts, renewal dates, outstanding commitments, and any consent or account-change steps needed for continuity. Shopify’s transfer guidance asks parties to consider contracts and obligations; treat that review as a business handover task, not as something completed automatically by the Shopify ownership change.
5. Record the store’s operating baseline
Before changing settings, capture how the store currently works so the buyer can distinguish inherited behavior from post-transfer changes. Shopify advises bringing the store up to date and ensuring inventory is accurate as part of transfer preparation. For the broader audit, document:

These are inspection topics, not Shopify-certified quality measures. Shopify’s transfer and migration guidance provide context for preparation: ownership transfer and migration planning.
6. Test the customer journey, not just the admin handover
A successful ownership change does not prove that checkout, fulfillment, or customer communications work. Run test orders that reflect the store’s actual markets and operating choices. Shopify’s migration guidance recommends testing relevant store functions and preparing for domain or DNS changes and rollback. Treat each result as evidence of the configuration at the time of the test, not a guarantee of future performance.
Best Value
- Choose representative cases. Include the payment methods, shipping zones, and tax scenarios the store actually uses.
- Exercise checkout variations. Where applicable, test discounts and gift cards as well as a standard order.
- Follow orders through fulfillment. Check partial fulfillment where the business uses it, and verify the resulting customer updates.
- Test after-sales handling. Process a refund in an appropriate test scenario and inspect the related notifications.
- Check measurement. Follow the order journey and verify that analytics pixels fire as expected.
- Keep a rollback plan for migration changes. Record the previous domain or DNS configuration and the steps needed to restore service if the change causes problems.

Agree which business records the seller will retain and which relevant bills, payout history, and transaction records the buyer will receive. Put the timeline, training, continuing third-party relationships, brand assets, staff arrangements, and post-transfer access in writing. Shopify says onboarding may take days to months depending on the business’s size and complexity; that is planning guidance, not a fixed transfer-duration promise.
Check special account arrangements before setting a closing date. Shopify’s transfer page says stores using Shopify Capital or Shopify Credit cannot be transferred. It also says an active Shopify Balance must be emptied and Shopify Support contacted, and that changes to Shopify Payments business information may require Support. Confirm current eligibility and required steps in the admin before closing, since account status and the applicable process matter. Start with the current Shopify ownership-transfer instructions.
Compare takeover opportunities on the same control points
If you are evaluating more than one store, use a consistent set of questions rather than relying on a single headline metric. These are practical comparison axes drawn from Shopify’s documented transfer and migration topics, not a Shopify-published scoring standard.
| Audit area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Control and access | Who is the store owner, which people and services have access, and can the buyer obtain the roles needed to operate it? |
| Payment and billing continuity | Where payouts go, which provider accounts need separate action, who pays app charges, and what bills or obligations remain. |
| Domain and DNS | Who controls the registrar account, which DNS records matter, and whether registrar ownership is part of the transaction. |
| Apps and contracts | Which integrations and third parties the business relies on, what each costs or can access, and what must be transferred or renewed. |
| Inventory and order workflow | Whether inventory records and fulfillment, shipping, returns, and refunds processes are understandable and workable. |
| Checkout and launch readiness | Whether representative payment, shipping, tax, discount, notification, refund, and analytics paths have been tested. |
What a completed first audit should leave you with
Before closing, the buyer and seller should have a clear owner-transfer plan, an access list, documented payout and billing responsibilities, a domain and DNS handover plan, an app and contract inventory, an operating baseline, test-order results, and a written transition schedule. Shopify ownership transfer establishes control of the Shopify store; the surrounding accounts, contracts, records, and customer workflows need their own explicit checks.
