Keep each uploaded image as the authoritative original, then create separate buyer-facing crops and size or format variants. Release only a derivative that has reached the moderation state your product policy requires. This preserves the source while letting buyers see images suited to their devices and product pages.
Why keep the original after making a crop?
A crop is a presentation version, not a replacement for the uploaded source. If you overwrite the original, you lose the ability to create a different crop later, revisit a moderation decision, or generate a new size or format from the best available source. Google Cloud describes generating responsive outputs from one master image, while AWS documents transformation strategies that can return either a transformed image or the original unchanged.

Store the upload as the source of truth and keep derived assets—such as moderated crops, thumbnails, and responsive formats—as separate objects. Give the source a stable identifier and record each derivative’s relationship to it, including the transformation settings and moderation status. This lineage is an architecture recommendation, not a database design prescribed by the cited services.

Separate image processing from buyer access
Transformation and moderation answer different questions. Cropping changes how an image is presented; moderation analyzes it for potentially inappropriate or offensive content. Amazon Rekognition’s image moderation procedure accepts JPEG or PNG, but a classification result does not itself define whether a marketplace should display, blur, reject, or review an image.

Model delivery as a separate decision from storage and processing. Keep the original under the access rules intended for source files, and expose only a derivative whose moderation state and product policy allow it to be shown. A flagged image might be held for review, blurred, rejected, or handled another way depending on the policy; a configured blur action alone is not a complete moderation policy.
Choose a crop strategy that fits the image
The right crop depends on what buyers need to see and what the image contains. AWS’s image-transformation documentation describes cover, contain, fill, inside, and outside strategies, as well as a no-crop option that returns the original unchanged. Its ECS architecture also supports target detection and fallback strategies.

- Preserve the important subject: For products where a feature or part must remain visible, assess whether target detection keeps it in frame.
- Match the display shape: Choose a strategy based on the destination aspect ratio and whether the result may crop, pad, or resize the image.
- Plan for detection failure: Decide what happens when the system cannot find a target. A predictable fallback is safer than an accidental crop.
- Allow an uncropped view where useful: A no-crop option can preserve the complete image when cropping would remove important context.
Test representative image subjects and destination sizes before settling on a default. The cited vendor materials describe capabilities, not a universal crop-quality ranking.

Animated images need an explicit workflow. AWS documents that its moderation feature does not support animated GIFs; Google’s usage documentation says moderation and smart cropping are skipped for animated images. If animated media is allowed, route it through safeguards appropriate to the product rather than assuming the still-image workflow applies. If equivalent safeguards are required and unavailable, disallow animated uploads.

Serve derivatives efficiently without losing control
A single master can produce the sizes and formats different buyer devices need, and transformed outputs can be cached at the edge. Google Cloud describes responsive delivery from one master image, including automatic WebP for browsers that support it. Treat those outputs as cacheable derivatives, not as new authoritative sources.
For private or time-limited buyer access, configure URL access controls and cache behavior together. Google documents expiring URLs and cache-control bounded by expiry, and warns that expiry alone is not protection if unsigned parameters can be removed. Choose invalidation behavior that reflects how quickly a changed crop or moderation decision must reach buyers.

Keep marketplace image requirements distinct from preservation
Marketplace listing guidance governs images submitted for product display; it does not replace an application’s source-preservation and moderation architecture. Google Merchant Center recommends using distinct images for each product variant and recommends around 1500 × 1500 pixels or above for best performance. Its page, accessed October 7, 2026, states that a 500 × 500 pixel minimum begins January 31, 2027. Amazon Seller Central cautions that uploading an image does not guarantee it will be selected for display.

What to evaluate in an image-delivery pipeline
- Whether target detection preserves the subject buyers need to see.
- What happens when detection fails, including whether an uncropped fallback is available.
- Which formats are accepted and how animated media is handled.
- Which moderation labels and thresholds are configurable, and what actions follow each result.
- How transformed outputs are cached and invalidated after an image or moderation decision changes.
- Whether delivery URLs are signed or expiring when images are private or time-limited.
- Whether every derivative can be traced to its source and transformation settings.
These are evaluation criteria, not a head-to-head performance comparison: the cited AWS and Google Cloud materials describe example capabilities and do not establish comparative cost, quality, or accuracy benchmarks.
Retention and policy decisions still belong to the product
The cited technical guidance does not determine how long originals should be kept, the legal basis for processing them, or the consent and deletion rules that apply. Set retention and access practices in light of the product’s policy and applicable jurisdiction. Likewise, do not treat a moderation classification as a guarantee of accuracy or as a substitute for deciding what outcomes your marketplace permits.
