Refillable butane lighters use butane, but the correct fuel and refill method depend on the specific lighter. A torch flame is a concentrated burner; “wind-resistant” is a product-specific claim, not a guarantee that a lighter will stay lit in every wind. Check the model’s instructions, refill it away from ignition sources, and wait the stated stabilization time before lighting.
What fuel does a butane lighter use?
A refillable butane lighter takes butane, but that does not make every butane canister suitable for every model. Follow the lighter maker’s fuel recommendation and instructions. Zippo recommends its butane for its cited flexible-neck and outdoor utility lighters and warns that other fuel may damage the filling valve or cause clogging; its Outdoor Utility instructions specify premium-grade butane. These are recommendations for those products, not proof that one brand is required for all butane lighters. Zippo Flexible Neck Utility Lighter · Zippo Outdoor Utility Lighter

Before buying fuel, confirm that the lighter is refillable and check its manual for the required fuel and filling method. Lighter types and inserts can have different requirements; Zippo’s customer-care documentation, for example, lists separate instructions for windproof lighters and butane inserts. How to refill a butane lighter safely
Butane and other lighter fuels are extremely flammable. Refill in a ventilated area, well away from heat, sparks, flames, and other potential ignition sources. Never refill next to an active flame. Use the procedure and stabilization time specified for your exact model rather than treating another brand’s steps as universal.
#1 Best Overall
- 2-Pack Total. Zippo Butane Fuel 75 ml each can. Made in USA
- Zippo Butane Fuel will keep your Flex Necks, Candle Lighters, and Outdoor Utility Lighters working at their best.
- Will not clog burner valves thus affecting flame height and function
- This product can also be used to fill most butane candles and butane curling irons
- Universal tip fuels all leading butane lighters and butane torches
- Prepare the area and lighter. Work in ventilation and away from ignition sources. Follow the manual’s directions for disabling ignition and cooling the lighter if required.
- Use the compatible fuel and the model’s filling method. For example, SAROME’s procedure calls for bleeding air from the tank, shaking the canister, holding the lighter upside down, and pressing the can nozzle to the inlet valve. Those steps are specific to SAROME’s guidance, not a universal method. SAROME: How to refill fuel
- Do not overfill, and let excess gas dissipate. Zippo’s FireFast guidance says to avoid overfilling and allow excess butane to dissipate before relighting. Follow the instructions for your own lighter. Zippo FireFast Torch
- Wait before ignition. SAROME says to wait 2–3 minutes after refilling; Zippo’s Flex Neck and Outdoor Utility instructions say to wait at least two minutes. These are model-specific manufacturer instructions. Start with a low flame setting if the manual advises it, and ignite away from your face. Soft flame, torch flame, and wind-resistant designs
Soft or open flame
“Soft flame” or “open flame” generally distinguishes a broader, exposed flame from a focused torch jet. The cited manufacturer material does not establish a rigorous definition or a controlled comparison that applies to every lighter. Do not infer a universal temperature or wind performance from the label.
Torch flame
A torch lighter uses a concentrated burner. Zippo describes its refillable FireFast as having an adjustable precision flame and an air-mix slide. For that model, Zippo describes a blue setting and a lower-temperature yellow setting for tasks such as bending glass. Those details are FireFast-specific; flame color alone is not a reliable cross-brand ranking of temperature or quality. Zippo FireFast Torch

Wind-resistant utility flame
Wind resistance is a separate design or use claim from being a torch. Zippo describes the Flex Neck XL’s dual-flame technology as “wind-resistant” and presents the lighter for outdoor use. Treat that as Zippo’s description of its product, not a guarantee for every wind condition. Zippo Flex Neck XL with Tinder product guide
“Windproof” claims
A product name or manual title that says “windproof” does not by itself establish performance at a particular wind speed. The Sharper Image manual titled “Windproof Torch Lighter User Guide” provides instructions for that model, but it does not supply a standardized comparative wind-speed test. How to choose a lighter for the task
Compare products by the job you need them to do, not by a universal ranking that the available product descriptions do not establish. Consider:
- Intended task and access: A utility design may help reach an outdoor item; a concentrated torch is intended for a more focused flame. Check the maker’s stated use.
- Fuel and refillability: Confirm the model’s required fuel and whether it is refillable before buying a lighter or fuel.
- Flame adjustment: Check whether the lighter offers a usable adjustment and whether its manual explains the settings.
- Wind claim: Look for the maker’s exact claim and any independent test data. Do not assume “torch” means windproof.
- Safety and maintenance: Review ignition controls, refill directions, cooling or stabilization requirements, and model-specific troubleshooting.
The cited pages are manufacturer guidance and a product manual, not standardized head-to-head testing. They do not establish a universal best flame, universal flame temperatures, or an objective wind-resistance ranking.
