The best compact everyday-carry lighter depends on what you plan to ignite and which upkeep you prefer: a refillable wick lighter needs fuel, flints, and a wick; a butane lighter needs refilling; and a rechargeable arc lighter needs charging and brings no flame. These are different mechanisms, not interchangeable winners. Check the exact model’s case compatibility and, if you fly in the United States, the FAA’s restrictions before choosing.

Zippo’s Classic Black Crackle listing describes an all-metal windproof lighter with a standard refillable insert. The maker recommends Zippo lighter fuel, flints, and wicks. That gives you a concrete traditional option if you want a wick-and-flame design and accept that its consumables require upkeep. The listing does not establish how often a typical owner needs to refill it.
Butane: compare flame styles and maker-stated output
Butane models range from conventional yellow flames to concentrated torch flames. Zippo’s insert guide gives specifications for two of its inserts; these are manufacturer-stated maximums, not independent test results or a guarantee for other models.

Those figures apply to the named Zippo inserts, not butane lighters generally. A torch is a distinct flame type, and the FAA specifically prohibits torch lighters on aircraft; a general allowance for some butane lighters does not override that restriction.
Rechargeable arc: no fuel refill, but charging is part of ownership
Zippo describes its double-arc insert as flameless and windproof. Its maker-stated specifications are a one-hour charge time and up to 40 five-second ignitions per charge. It uses double-tap push-button ignition and a 10-second automatic shutoff. These are product specifications, not independent measurements.

According to Zippo’s insert guide, the double-arc fits classic Zippo windproof cases but not Slim or 1935 Replica cases. Confirm the case fit before buying an insert. Since an arc is not a flame, consider the shape and position of the object you want to ignite rather than assuming it will work like a wick or torch lighter.
Choose by intended use and acceptable upkeep
- Prefer a traditional refillable wick if you want that classic mechanism and are willing to maintain its fuel, flint, and wick.
- Compare butane models if you want a conventional flame or a torch and are prepared to refill them. Check the model’s flame style and case fit.
- Consider an arc lighter if avoiding liquid fuel is useful to you and charging is acceptable. Check case compatibility and whether an arc suits the object you intend to light.

U.S. flight rules: check the lighter category, not just its fuel
The Federal Aviation Administration’s PackSafe page, last updated April 13, 2026, distinguishes lighter types. Under its U.S. guidance:
- Absorbed-liquid and butane lighters are limited to one per passenger in carry-on baggage or on the person.
- The FAA says, “Lithium battery powered lighters are allowed in carry on only.” They must be protected against accidental activation, and charging the device or its battery aboard the aircraft is prohibited.
- Torch lighters are not permitted in the cabin or checked baggage.
These are FAA rules for U.S. travel. Check the requirements for every part of your itinerary, including any non-U.S. carrier or destination rules.
