Burst Mode Photography: How to Capture and Compare Fast Action

Burst mode, also called continuous shooting, takes a rapid series of still photos so you can choose the best frame from a moving or fleeting moment.

Burst mode photography captures a quick sequence of still photos while you hold or activate the shutter. It is also called continuous shooting. Use it when a moment is brief or the exact timing is hard to predict, then choose the frame that best captures the action.

What burst mode does

Instead of taking one picture per shutter press, a camera in burst mode takes successive still images in rapid order. The sequence continues according to the camera’s controls and settings. Fujifilm describes the feature in its X-T5 manual as capturing motion in a series of pictures.

Burst mode does not make a video: it creates separate photos that you can review and select individually.

When to use burst mode

Choose burst shooting when a subject is moving or the decisive instant may pass quickly—for example, a runner crossing a finish line, a pet jumping, or a child blowing out candles. Several frames give you options for expression, pose, and timing. Apple likewise recommends iPhone Burst mode for moving subjects or when you want multiple high-speed photos to choose from (Apple Support instructions).

KODAK PIXPRO FZ45 16MP Compact Digital Camera, 4X Optical Zoom, AA, Black | 1080p Full HD Video, 27mm Wide Angle Lens, 2.7 Inch LCD, Point and Shoot, Digicam, Travel and Family Photos
  • 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
  • Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
  • Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
  • LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use

For a still subject or a scene where you have time to compose and release the shutter deliberately, a single shot is usually simpler and avoids creating a larger batch to review.

How to take burst photos

On a camera

  1. Set the camera’s drive or release mode to a continuous-shooting option. Names and menu locations vary by model; the Fujifilm X-T5, for example, offers high- and low-speed continuous modes and a selectable frame-advance rate.
  2. Compose and focus on the subject, then press and hold the shutter button to capture the sequence.
  3. Release the button to stop. On the X-T5, shooting can also end when the memory card is full. Check your camera’s manual for its exact controls and behavior.

On iPhone

  1. Swipe the Shutter button to the left and hold to start taking photos rapidly.
  2. Lift your finger to stop the sequence.
  3. Open the burst thumbnail, tap the burst count, select the images you want to keep, and tap Done. These steps are documented in Apple’s iPhone guide.

Why a burst can slow down

A camera’s advertised or selected frame rate is not necessarily sustainable for an entire sequence. Photos are temporarily held in a buffer before they are written to the memory card. When that buffer fills, the camera may slow or pause while it records images and clears space. Nikon’s Z6III reference guide explains that its frame-count display indicates how many pictures can fit in the memory buffer; when it fills, the display shows r000 and the frame rate drops. The number of frames available varies with settings and shooting conditions (Nikon Z6III reference guide).

What changes in burst mode

Do not assume that focus, exposure, or flash will behave the same way in every frame. Depending on the camera and selected drive settings, focus or exposure may track between shots, operate differently, or be restricted at some rates. Fujifilm’s X-E3 instructions describe focus-tracking choices and limitations, and explain that tracking performance depends on settings and shooting conditions. Flash may also fail to fire in some burst situations, as noted in the X-T5 manual. Consult the manual for your specific camera before relying on a burst for critical action.

What to check when comparing burst performance

A single frames-per-second figure does not tell you how well a camera will handle a real sequence. For a meaningful comparison, check the manufacturer’s specifications or current manual for:

  • Maximum frame rate and the conditions required to reach it.
  • How many frames it can capture before slowing, including the file format and image-quality settings used.
  • Whether autofocus and exposure track during the sequence, and any rate-related restrictions.
  • How long the camera takes to clear its buffer and return to full-speed shooting.

These details vary by camera and configuration, so there is no universal burst rate or burst length that applies to all cameras.
