ASIC Explained: What the Chip Is and How It Differs from an FPGA

An ASIC is a custom integrated circuit whose hardware is fixed after manufacture. Learn what the term means and how ASICs differ from FPGAs and standard chips.

An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is a chip custom-designed or custom-manufactured to perform a defined function. Its hardware is fixed when it is made; unlike a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), it cannot be reconfigured by the user afterward. ASICs can contain digital, analog, or mixed-signal circuitry, and may integrate several functions rather than just one simple operation.

What does ASIC stand for?

ASIC stands for application-specific integrated circuit. “Application-specific” describes the chip’s intended use: it is tailored to a particular product, customer, or function rather than designed as a broadly configurable component for many unrelated uses.

NIST’s CSRC glossary, attributing its definition to CNSSI 4009-2022 and noting adaptation from Encyclopedia Britannica, defines an ASIC as “A digital or analog circuit, custom-designed and/or custom-manufactured to perform a specific function. An ASIC is not reconfigurable and cannot contain additional instructions.” NIST CSRC glossary

The definition does not mean an ASIC must perform only one primitive task. A design can combine multiple blocks or include general-purpose computing elements; what makes it application-specific is that its hardware implements the required behavior for its intended use. How is an ASIC different from an FPGA or ASSP?

The central difference is whether a customer can change the hardware behavior after manufacture, and whether the chip is custom to a customer or sold as a standard product. An ASIC is fixed; an FPGA is reconfigurable; an ASSP is tailored to an application class but offered as a standard-market product.

Chip type Customization or programmability Typical reason to choose it
ASIC Hardware is customized for an application and fixed in the manufactured chip. Customer-specific functions, product differentiation, or close system integration. Requires upfront design and verification work. NIST; Bosch
FPGA Programmable logic and routing can be reconfigured after manufacture. Design iteration, prototyping, or applications where post-manufacture flexibility matters. It involves different cost and performance trade-offs from an ASIC. Intel FPGA overview; Infineon ASIC overview
ASSP Designed for a particular application class, then sold as a standard product to a broader market, generally with limited or no customer-specific changes. A ready-made market option when a standard chip meets the product’s needs. Bosch Semiconductor ASIC overview

An FPGA can also serve as a prototype or development platform for functionality that may later be implemented in an ASIC. That does not make the FPGA an ASIC: the FPGA remains reprogrammable, while the fabricated ASIC’s hardware function is fixed. Infineon; Intel

What kinds of circuits can an ASIC contain?

ASICs may be digital, analog, or mixed-signal. Digital logic handles discrete signals and operations; analog circuitry processes continuously varying signals; mixed-signal designs combine analog and digital blocks. IEEE’s engineering overview discusses analog functions including amplification, filtering, analog-to-digital conversion, phase-locked loops, and radio-frequency front ends. These functions can appear in ASIC designs, but a circuit is not automatically an ASIC just because it performs one of them. IEEE engineering overview

A custom chip may combine interfaces, processing, sensing, and other blocks to meet a product’s requirements. ASIC describes the customization and purpose of the integrated circuit, not a rule that it must contain one kind of circuitry or only one feature.

Where are ASICs used?

ASICs are useful when standard integrated circuits do not provide the desired combination of functions, integration, or product-specific behavior. Manufacturer examples include automotive sensor interfaces, control ICs, and mixed-signal devices tailored to a vehicle platform. Bosch Semiconductor

Other application areas cited by Infineon include healthcare wearables, machine vision, industrial robots, electronic toll collection, and home or building automation. These are examples, not a complete list of ASIC applications. Infineon

Application-specific processing and accelerators are another design area. The label should be applied to a particular design based on how it is built and intended to be used; it should not be assumed that every processor, graphics chip, or system-on-chip is necessarily an ASIC.

Why choose an ASIC, and what are the trade-offs?

A custom design can integrate the functions a product needs and target particular performance, power, or form-factor requirements. It can also implement proprietary behavior that distinguishes a product. Those are design goals, not automatic results: whether an ASIC is faster, more power-efficient, smaller, or cheaper depends on the workload, architecture, manufacturing choices, development investment, and production volume. Intel notes that a custom ASIC generally outperforms an FPGA for a specific task, but that does not establish a universal advantage for every design. Intel FPGA overview

  • Digilent Basys 3 Artix-7 FPGA Trainer Board: Recommended for Introductory Users
  • Potential advantages: tailored functionality, close integration, and an opportunity to optimize for a defined workload or product.
  • Costs and constraints: upfront development and verification effort, potentially long lead times, and hardware that cannot be reconfigured after fabrication.
  • Key decision: compare the expected production volume and workload with the value of customization, flexibility, and a standard-market alternative.

There is no single generally applicable ASIC development cost or schedule. Both depend on the design and project; a broad estimate should not be treated as a reliable quote for a particular chip.

How is an ASIC developed?

A typical digital ASIC project turns a product requirement into a verified design and then into manufactured silicon. Projects with analog or mixed-signal blocks add the corresponding design and verification work.

  1. Specify the application: define the required behavior, interfaces, operating conditions, and product constraints.
  2. Describe the hardware: engineers create a hardware design, commonly using a hardware description language for digital logic.
  3. Synthesize and verify the logic: translate the design into an implementation and check that it meets the specification.
  4. Complete physical design: develop the chip layout and prepare the design for manufacturing.
  5. Tape out and fabricate: send the completed design to a semiconductor foundry for fabrication.
  6. Verify the manufactured chip: test the silicon to confirm that it behaves as intended.

An FPGA may be used along the way to prototype, iterate on, or debug some of the intended functionality before committing to ASIC fabrication. It supports design development; it does not remove the need to verify the final fixed hardware. Infineon; Intel
