That backup pathway may help sustain essential neural activity, but it is not a permanent energy source, and it has not been shown to treat human disease.
How a bullfrog brain makes backup fuel
In the usual pathway described by the University of Missouri, the liver turns fatty acids into ketone bodies during conditions such as fasting, starvation or prolonged exercise. Those ketones travel through the blood to organs including the brain. In the reported bullfrog finding, the brain itself can produce ketone bodies when glucose is scarce, providing a local alternative fuel for critical neural functions.

Joseph Santin, associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri and lead author of the study, said: “Scientists generally believe ketones are delivered to the brain from elsewhere in the body,” the university’s Sept. 28, 2026 account describes the local production as the discovery’s distinguishing feature.

Why the pathway may matter in winter
Bullfrogs enter a winter hibernation-like state in which metabolism slows and energy reserves decline. In spring, they need to reactivate essential brain circuits. The University of Missouri researchers suggest local ketone production may help with this seasonal transition, but the finding does not establish that it is the sole reason bullfrogs survive winter or recover activity in spring.

What scientists still do not know
The researchers have not established what triggers local ketone production or how long a bullfrog can rely on it. The university describes the shift as a non-permanent backup when the usual energy supply falls short. The available account does not specify a trigger, threshold or duration.
Does this mean ketones could treat human brain disorders?
No human treatment has been demonstrated. Santin sees the work as a possible way to inform future study of how brains adapt when energy is limited, including in conditions associated with impaired energy metabolism. That is a research direction, not evidence that bullfrog ketones prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, schizophrenia or other neurological disorders.

The study also does not show that taking ketone supplements recreates the bullfrog brain’s local fuel production. The finding concerns a mechanism reported in American bullfrogs, not a tested intervention in people.

A separate 2008 study examined cell proliferation in adult bullfrog brains and reported new neurons particularly in the hypothalamus, optic tectum and torus semicircularis. It investigated whether cells proliferate and neurons form; it did not study brain-local ketone production. The authors also said it was unknown whether adult bullfrog brains continue growing by adding neurons. The study’s PubMed record and its full text in PubMed Central describe that distinct line of research.

What “brain superpower” means here
“Superpower” is a headline metaphor for a reported backup fuel pathway, not a claim that bullfrogs are immune to energy deprivation. The result, reported by the University of Missouri in its account of the study published in PNAS under the title “Transforming neural activity to operate without glucose metabolism using brain-derived ketone bodies,” concerns American bullfrogs (Aquarana catesbeiana). It should not be generalized to all frogs, other animals or people without further evidence.
