Microsoft Rayfin is an open-source TypeScript SDK for building Fabric Apps—managed, code-first applications that run inside Microsoft Fabric. Fabric Apps is still in preview, but it can generate the data layer, APIs, authentication flow, hosting, and Fabric-connected services from application code.
What Rayfin and Fabric Apps are
Rayfin supplies the development model behind Fabric Apps. You define data models and application behavior in TypeScript; Fabric then provisions and operates the backend services needed by the app. That includes managed SQL, brokered authentication, static-content hosting, app networking, generated APIs, and typed client methods. Optional server-side functions and connector routes are also supported.

The result is a managed Fabric item with child services rather than a conventional application stack that you assemble and operate separately. Microsoft positions the approach for teams that want application development close to their governed Fabric data estate.

Developer and workspace requirements
- Access to a Microsoft Fabric tenant.
- A Fabric workspace assigned to Fabric capacity.
- Workspace and item permissions sufficient to create, edit, and deploy an app.
- Node.js 20 or later and npm.
- A Fabric tenant administrator who has enabled the Fabric Apps (preview) workload.
Preview availability and maturity can vary by tenant and region. Confirm that the workload is enabled before troubleshooting a missing App (preview) option.

Create the Fabric item from the portal
- Open the Fabric portal and choose New item → App (preview).
- Select a workspace that has Fabric capacity assigned.
- Open the item in Visual Studio Code when prompted. The project can then be edited locally and deployed with the Rayfin CLI.
The CLI can also target a workspace during scaffolding or deployment, which is useful when a team creates projects outside the portal-first flow.

npm run devnpx rayfin up provisions or updates the Fabric-backed services. npm run dev starts the project’s development script. The CLI tutorial also supports npx rayfin dev as a direct local-development command; use the command that matches the script and workflow in your scaffolded project.

Rayfin analyzes TypeScript decorators such as @entity, @text, @uuid, @boolean, and @date. Those declarations can drive database-table generation, GraphQL endpoints, row-level authorization rules, and typed client methods. The schema and deployment configuration are therefore code-owned: make changes through Rayfin commands and source control instead of editing the managed database directly in the portal.

Deploy, preview, and verify changes
Use the CLI’s narrower commands when you need to inspect or isolate a deployment:

A practical team workflow is to review a dry run, apply the full change or the specific database/static-asset operation, and then verify the resulting status. Keep rayfin.yml, the data models, and deployment changes in version control so the portal remains the runtime surface rather than the source of truth.

Identity, permissions, and governance
Deployed apps use Fabric single sign-on through Microsoft Entra ID. Fabric documents three important item-level permission patterns:

Workspace roles do not automatically substitute for these item-level permissions. Plan both layers when an app moves from a developer workspace to a shared production workspace. Microsoft also describes Fabric Apps as inheriting Fabric’s governance, security, and compliance foundations, which can simplify oversight when the application and its data remain within the same estate.
Where Rayfin fits best
- Rapid prototypes: move from a TypeScript model to a working, authenticated app without building a separate API and database platform.
- Internal tools and dashboards: Fabric SSO and governed workspace access suit employee-facing applications.
- Data exploration and visualization: keep the interface close to Fabric data and generated query surfaces.
- AI and agent applications: use Fabric-hosted data and application services as the foundation for an AI experience.
These are suitability categories, not a promise of a particular performance level. Microsoft’s published material does not provide independent performance, adoption, market-size, or cost figures for Rayfin.
When another architecture may be a better fit
- Complex multi-step transactions: workflows that require intricate transactional orchestration may outgrow the generated application model.
- Stored-procedure-heavy systems: designs centered on extensive database procedures may not align with Rayfin’s code-first schema workflow.
- Non-Fabric identity requirements: the documented deployed experience uses Fabric SSO, while local development can use email/password; applications requiring other identity providers should be assessed carefully.
- Strict maturity or regional requirements: Fabric Apps remains a preview feature, so release maturity and regional availability need to be verified for the target tenant.
How to evaluate Rayfin against alternatives
Compare platforms on the constraints that affect the whole delivery lifecycle, not just on how quickly a screen can be generated:

A deployment checklist for teams
- Ask the tenant administrator to enable Fabric Apps (preview).
- Confirm the destination workspace is assigned to Fabric capacity.
- Verify Node.js 20 or later, npm, and the required workspace/item permissions.
- Scaffold the project and keep models,
rayfin.yml, and environment configuration under source control. - Review generated schema and authorization behavior before sharing the app.
- Use a dry run for deployment review, then apply the required database, application, or static-asset changes.
- Grant item-level Run and interact, Edit, or Reshare permissions deliberately; do not assume workspace membership covers them.
- Record the preview status and any regional or governance constraints in the team’s release decision.
What Microsoft is promising—and what to verify yourself
Rayfin’s appeal is the path from a TypeScript model to a governed Fabric application without separately operating every backend component. Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, described the model on Microsoft’s Rayfin product page as “a path from idea to enterprise-grade production that’s measured in hours, not months.” That is a product vision, not an independent benchmark. Teams should validate their own transaction patterns, identity needs, regional availability, and operational controls before treating a preview app as a production standard.
