Apple’s development path starts with a Mac with Apple silicon, Xcode and the visionOS SDK; the right amount of spatial design depends on what your app needs to do.
What does it take to develop for Apple Vision Pro?
visionOS is the operating system for Apple Vision Pro. Apple builds its development approach around familiar Apple-platform tools, extended to interfaces and content that occupy space around the user. Apple states that developing for visionOS requires a Mac with Apple silicon. Its visionOS documentation does not prescribe a particular Mac model, memory capacity or storage amount.

Development starts with Xcode and the visionOS SDK. Use the current release of Xcode and its supported SDK when starting a project; specific versions and release requirements change. Apple recommends SwiftUI for taking advantage of visionOS, while UIKit, RealityKit and ARKit are also part of the platform’s development toolkit. You do not need to use every framework in every app: choose according to your interface, existing code and 3D or spatial requirements.

Windows
A window presents an app’s interface as a familiar 2D surface in the user’s surroundings. This can be a sensible fit for content and workflows that already work well as a conventional app interface.
Volumes
A volume is a bounded space for 3D content. It can add depth to an object, model or other visual element without making the entire experience immersive.

Immersive spaces
An immersive space can place users inside a more encompassing scene. It is a larger design commitment than presenting a window or a volume, so use it when immersion contributes to the task rather than as decoration.
Can an iPhone or iPad app run on Vision Pro?
Often, yes. Apple says most iPhone and iPad apps can run unmodified on Apple Vision Pro, and compatible apps may be made available automatically in its App Store. “Most” does not mean every app: dependencies and compatibility matter. Apple’s App Store submission guidance explains availability management, including options in App Store Connect.

Running an app compatibly is different from redesigning it for spatial computing. You can make an existing app available without rebuilding every screen as a 3D experience; a platform-specific adaptation is a separate product decision.
Which development route should you take?
| Route | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Make an existing app available | Check compatibility and manage visionOS availability in App Store Connect where appropriate. | An app whose existing interface and workflows remain useful without a spatial redesign. |
| Adapt an existing Apple app | Preserve familiar content and workflows, then add visionOS-specific features where they improve the experience. | A product that benefits from spatial features but should retain its established app structure. |
| Build a spatial-first app | Start with the visionOS SDK and design around windows, 3D content or immersive spaces. | A product whose core task depends on spatial presentation or interaction. |
These routes are practical choices, not a ranking. Consider how much of the existing product needs redesign, how much 3D or immersion the task warrants, which frameworks and asset workflows suit the team, and the device-specific testing and store preparation involved.

What tools handle interface, 3D content and testing?
SwiftUI, UIKit, RealityKit and ARKit
SwiftUI is Apple’s recommended starting point for taking full advantage of visionOS. UIKit can be relevant when adapting an existing app or working with established UIKit code. RealityKit and ARKit support spatial and 3D experiences; whether they belong in a project depends on the features being built. Apple’s learning pathway introduces these frameworks alongside the platform’s main concepts.
Reality Composer Pro and Unity
Reality Composer Pro supports preparing and previewing 3D content in a workflow integrated with Xcode. Apple also documents Unity as an authoring route for apps and games. These are alternative workflow options, not a promise of feature parity; select one based on your project’s needs and the team’s experience.

Xcode Previews and the simulator
Apple describes Xcode Previews and the visionOS simulator as ways to try layouts and lighting. They can help during development, but the cited documentation does not establish that simulator use replaces validation on physical hardware. Plan testing around the app’s actual interactions and deployment needs.
How do you get started?
- Choose the route. Decide whether you are making an existing app available, adapting it or creating a spatial-first product.
- Set up the development environment. Use a Mac with Apple silicon, then install the current Xcode release and its visionOS SDK.
- Learn the spatial building blocks. Follow Apple’s visionOS Pathway for concepts, documentation and tools, including its material on 3D content, first apps and immersive experiences.
- Build only the spatial features your app needs. Start with a window if the task suits one; add a volume or immersive space when 3D or immersion meaningfully helps.
- Test and prepare distribution. Use Xcode’s available previews and simulator during development, then manage testing and deployment through App Store Connect and Apple’s App Store processes. Check Apple’s current submission guidance before release because requirements can change.
Do you need a physical Vision Pro to develop?
Apple’s stated development prerequisite is a Mac with Apple silicon. The cited developer materials describe previews and a simulator, but do not establish that a physical headset is unnecessary for every development or testing workflow. Treat device requirements as project-dependent, and verify current Apple guidance for the specific testing and release process you plan to use.
