Building an AI STEM Solver That Shows Its Work—and Checks It

A trustworthy AI STEM solver exposes its assumptions and intermediate steps, then checks results with methods suited to the problem—without mistaking a check for proof.

A trustworthy AI STEM solver should make its reasoning inspectable, check calculations with an appropriate independent method, and disclose what those checks cannot establish. Showing steps and checking an answer can catch mistakes; neither turns a generated explanation into a proof or guarantees that the underlying model of a problem is right.

What “show its work” should mean

A useful solver does more than produce a polished answer. It makes the problem interpretation and consequential steps visible, so a student or teacher can see how the result follows—or spot where it does not.

That distinction matters because fluency and confidence are not reliable signals of correctness. OpenAI’s Help Center warns: “Confidence isn’t reliability: The model may express high confidence even in incorrect answers.” Its guidance is to treat ChatGPT as a first draft, verify important information, and encourage critical thinking in educational use (OpenAI Help Center: “Does ChatGPT tell the truth?”).

An explanation is therefore something to inspect, not a certificate of correctness. A solver should distinguish a displayed derivation from a result that has actually been checked by another method.

A practical design for an AI STEM solver

The following pipeline is a design principle, not a tested implementation or a guarantee of accuracy. Its purpose is to make errors easier to find and review.

  1. Parse the prompt and surface assumptions. Identify known values, the requested quantity, units, and constraints. If the problem leaves out information or permits multiple interpretations, ask a clarifying question or state the assumption before calculating.
  2. Show the solution sequence. Present equations, transformations, substitutions, and intermediate values in a form the learner can follow. Explain why a step is being taken; do not present generated prose as a formal proof.
  3. Check with a method suited to the result. Recalculate arithmetic, substitute a proposed solution back into an equation, test constraints, check dimensions and units, or derive the result another way. A calculator is suitable for arithmetic; it cannot by itself validate a physical model.
  4. Report what the check covered. Say whether a check confirmed arithmetic, algebraic consistency, units, or a constraint—and what it did not test. If the methods disagree, expose the mismatch rather than silently choosing the more plausible-looking answer.
  5. Leave room for human review. Invite the learner to compare assumptions and steps with the original question, course material, or an instructor, especially when context determines the correct model.

Why a second check helps—and where it falls short

Verification can be a separate system step rather than another sentence generated along with the answer. In OpenAI’s 2021 math-word-problem research, the system generated candidate solutions and used a verifier to rank them. The post describes generating 100 candidates at test time and selecting the highest-ranked one; it also discusses how a single generated chain can go wrong. That is an example of an approach, not a requirement that every solver use 100 candidates or the same architecture (OpenAI, “Solving Math Word Problems” (2021)).

The same post reported a 55% score for its verifier system on GSM8K problems, compared with 60% for a small sample of children aged 9–12 on the same problems. GSM8K contains 8,500 elementary arithmetic word problems, each requiring two to eight steps. These are historical results for that system, dataset, and evaluation—not estimates of current AI product performance or of STEM problem solving in general. The researchers also noted that verifier quality depends on sufficient training data and that small datasets can create a risk of overfitting.

Nor is a second AI answer automatically independent. If both attempts share the same mistaken assumption or interpretation, agreement may only repeat the same error. Stronger checks use a different route where possible: substitute an answer into the original equation, compare with a separately computed result, or test whether the result satisfies the stated physical constraints.

Separate calculation errors from modeling errors

In STEM, getting the arithmetic right is not the same as setting up the right problem. A calculation engine may accurately evaluate an equation that does not represent the situation described. The solver should therefore make its model and assumptions inspectable, not just its final arithmetic.

A 2023 study of ChatGPT in science and engineering problem-solving reported success on 62.5% of its well-specified problems and 8.3% of its under-specified problems. Those percentages describe that study’s tasks and evaluation, not universal or current ChatGPT accuracy rates. The study distinguished issues including model construction, assumptions for missing data, and calculation errors—different failure types that call for different checks (“Examining the Potential and Pitfalls of ChatGPT in Science and Engineering Problem-Solving” (2023)).

  • Assumptions: Identify what was inferred because the prompt omitted a value or condition.
  • Units and constraints: Check dimensional consistency, signs, plausible ranges, boundary conditions, and any stated limits.

A tool can help with one category while leaving the others untouched. A correct numerical operation does not establish that an assumption is justified, and a plausible unit does not prove that the model is valid.

For external data, Wolfram|Alpha says its source buttons provide background references. Its FAQ describes an internal knowledgebase assembled from sources and checking processes that include statistics, visualization, cross-checking, and expert review. It also acknowledges: “With trillions of pieces of data, it’s inevitable that there are still errors out there.” A computational checker is useful corroboration, not an unquestionable authority.

When choosing any checker, consider what it actually does and what you can inspect:

  • Does it compute a result, or primarily generate explanatory prose?
  • Can you see intermediate transformations and reproduce the check?
  • Does it support the subject and input format you need?
  • Does it expose assumptions, units, or sources for external data?
  • Are the relevant features accessible under your current plan or account?

A 2023 evaluation by Ernest Davis and Scott Aaronson examined GPT-4 with Wolfram Alpha and Code Interpreter plugins on 105 original high-school and college math and science problems. The authors reported that the plugins significantly enhanced ability, while interface failures remained. This finding is specific to that sample and the tools available in 2023; it illustrates both the potential value of tool integration and the possibility that translating a question into a tool-usable form can fail (Davis and Aaronson, “Testing GPT-4 with Wolfram Alpha and Code Interpreter on High School and College Math Problems” (2023)).

How students can use step-by-step answers

For learning, try the problem or make an estimate before revealing a generated solution. Then compare the displayed steps with your own work: check each transformation, note any unstated assumption, and test the final result against the original question. This is a recommended study practice, not a result established by the product announcements or studies cited here.

Interactive visuals can also help learners see how changing a variable affects a relationship, rather than treating a formula as a string of symbols. OpenAI’s 2026 announcement described an interactive math and science learning experience covering more than 70 concepts, including binomial squares, Charles’ law, Ohm’s law, kinetic energy, and the Pythagorean theorem. The announcement said the initial list was most relevant to high-school and college learners and described availability across plans at launch. Because feature status and plan access can change, consult the current product information before assuming it is available to you (OpenAI, “New ways to learn math and science in ChatGPT” (2026)).
