A Codex reset tracker is worth building as a log of what you verified yourself: the reset type, what your own Settings or usage view showed, the time you checked, and a link to the official rule. It should not be built as an account monitor. OpenAI’s help material documents where Codex usage and reset information appears to you and a CLI command for checking status, but it does not describe an interface that lets a third-party tracker read your account’s reset state. The design below works within that boundary.
What the tracker is, and what it is not
- It is a manual, timestamped record of reset information you looked at in OpenAI’s own interfaces, with each entry tied to the help article that explains the rule.
- It is not a live monitor. Nothing in OpenAI’s documented material shows a reset status feed for third-party software.
- It does not need your password, session cookies, or API tokens. If a tool asks for them to read reset state, treat that as outside what OpenAI’s published guidance supports.
- It cannot prove a reset is absent. If your account view does not show a reset, the log can only say that you did not see one at that time.
The three reset types readers mix up
Most confusion comes from treating every reset as the same thing. OpenAI’s help articles separate at least three kinds, and a log entry should name which one you are recording.

Banked reset
OpenAI’s help article on banked Codex resets defines it this way: “A banked reset is a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires.” (OpenAI Help Center, How banked Codex resets work)
Three details matter for a tracker. A banked reset is not purchased credit. It does not permanently raise your plan limits. And a full banked reset refreshes the 5-hour and weekly Codex windows and changes your weekly reset date.
#1 Best Overall
Automatic or global reset
An automatic or global reset applies directly to eligible limits and does not create a saved reset you can hold. Offers can also include a separate banked reset, so when you read an announcement, record which kind it describes. Do not record “I have a reset” from a general announcement; record what your own account showed.
Paid instant weekly reset
According to OpenAI’s help article on paid weekly Work and Codex rate limit resets, a paid instant weekly reset applies immediately and cannot be banked or scheduled. The new weekly period starts with your first subsequent Work or Codex request, and the next automatic weekly reset comes seven days after that first request. The paid reset pulls your normal weekly allowance forward; it does not add a separate entitlement. (OpenAI Help Center, Paid weekly Work and Codex rate limit resets)
How the three compare
| Question | Banked reset | Automatic or global reset | Paid instant weekly reset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stored or immediate | Stored to your account until used or expired | Applied directly; no saved reset described | Applied immediately |
| Must you apply it yourself | Yes; the help article describes it as saved for you to use | Not stated | Not stated as a separate step; it applies on purchase |
| Can it expire | Yes, per OpenAI’s definition | Not stated | Not applicable; cannot be banked |
| Usage windows refreshed | 5-hour and weekly Codex windows (full banked reset) | Eligible limits; which windows are covered is not stated | Weekly allowance, pulled forward |
| Effect on next weekly reset | Changes the weekly reset date | Not stated | New weekly period starts with your first subsequent Work or Codex request; next automatic weekly reset is seven days after that request |
| Eligibility | Varies by plan, account, workspace, region, and offer | Varies by plan, account, workspace, region, and offer | Varies by plan, account, workspace, region, and offer |
| Reset or credits balance | A reset, not purchased credit | A reset | A reset; not a separate entitlement |
Where to check the timing
Use your own account’s views as the authoritative source. OpenAI’s Codex plan guidance points readers to Settings or the usage dashboard for current usage and reset information, and to /status in an active Codex CLI session. (OpenAI Help Center, Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan)

- 52 DOUBLE-SIDED LOG PAGES – Keep a written record of work hours, calls, meetings, projects, appointments, mileage, rideshare activity, and daily tasks. Useful as a time tracker, work log book, call log, or project management notebook.
- COMPACT 5.5 x 8.5 SIZE – Small enough to carry in a work bag, purse, backpack, briefcase, or glove box, so your activity log can stay within reach at the office, on the road, between meetings, or while working in the field.
- PROTECTIVE COVER & PRIVACY SHEET – A protective plastic cover helps shield your pages during everyday use, while the privacy sheet helps keep the page beneath it out of view when your activity log is open on a desk or workspace.
- WHITE-COATED SPIRAL BOUND – The white-coated coil keeps metal away from your hands and is bound with extra room for a pen or pencil, making sure you’re always prepared. Perfect for managers, professionals, contractors, drivers, and busy schedules.
- Open Settings in your ChatGPT account, or the usage dashboard, and find the Codex usage section. Menu labels can change, so record the label you actually saw.
- Read the 5-hour and weekly Codex window figures and any reset or expiration text shown beside them.
- If a banked reset is listed, note whether it is shown as saved, how many there are, and any expiration date.
- In an active Codex CLI session, run
/statusand copy the reset-related lines it prints. - Write the observation time with a time zone, and keep a screenshot on your own machine if you want visual evidence. Store the file path, not the image, in the log.
If the views disagree, record both entries with their own timestamps rather than picking one. A mismatch is itself useful information.
Why your weekly reset date can move
A reader who sees a different weekly date after a purchase or a banked reset is often seeing documented behavior, not an error. A full banked reset changes the weekly reset date. A paid instant weekly reset starts a new weekly period at your first subsequent Work or Codex request, not at the moment you bought it.
That makes the first request a field worth logging. For example, if you buy a paid instant weekly reset at 09:00 on a Monday and your first Codex request is at 14:20 that day, the next automatic weekly reset falls seven days after 14:20, not seven days after 09:00. This is illustrative arithmetic based on the rule as OpenAI states it, so check your own Settings or usage view for the date actually shown.

Fields for the event log
OpenAI’s help articles do not define a data schema for trackers. The fields below are an implementation suggestion built around the limits those articles state.

Keep the log append-only. If you correct an entry, add a new row that references the earlier one, so the history of what you saw stays intact.
Privacy boundaries
OpenAI describes Personal Analytics as a read-only connection, not a data feed for outside tools. The usage article’s own words are: “Personal Analytics uses a read-only connection to OpenAI’s ChatGPT backends.” That connection is scoped to the signed-in identity and active account. The same article does not document any way for a third-party tracker to use it. (OpenAI Help Center, Reviewing Work and Codex usage and using Personal Analytics in ChatGPT Desktop)

Plan sharing with other apps is a separate arrangement. According to OpenAI, using a ChatGPT plan does not by itself give a participating app access to your ChatGPT conversations or memories, and usage settings do not show details about actions taken in that app. Review any other permissions an app requests and its privacy information separately, because this statement covers only the documented plan-sharing arrangement. (OpenAI Help Center, Using your ChatGPT plan in other apps and sites)
For your own tracker, a sensible rule is to store only what you typed, the timestamps, and file references to evidence you kept yourself. Avoid storing credentials or session data, and do not script logins to scrape account pages.
Limits of usage history
Usage numbers are useful for trends, but they are not a complete ledger. OpenAI states that chat totals are estimates for the main conversation. They may omit sub-agent or separate tasks, some tool activity, and background activity. Recent usage can also be delayed or unavailable. (OpenAI Help Center, Reviewing Work and Codex usage and using Personal Analytics in ChatGPT Desktop)
Best Value
The same article uses a 30-day window in two places: the Top consuming chats list selects chats active in the past 30 days, and workspace summaries use a trailing 30-day window. If you copy those figures into your log, label them with that window and the time you captured them.
Label every record with its capture time, and describe the tracker as a log of observations rather than a billing record.
Before you rely on any entry, check the current OpenAI help article it links to. Reset rules, plan eligibility, and promotions change, and a log entry is only as current as the observation and the source behind it.
