Document Picture-in-Picture lets a web app open a small, always-on-top window containing arbitrary HTML, making it a natural home for a floating mini-timer. Call requestWindow() from a user action, render the timer in the returned window, and keep an ordinary in-page timer available for browsers that do not support the API.
What Document Picture-in-Picture does
Document Picture-in-Picture (Document PiP) opens a separate browser-managed window that can display web content beyond video. A timer can therefore use its own HTML, text, buttons, and styling rather than being restricted to a video frame. This is different from classic Picture-in-Picture, whose focus is a video element. Choose Document PiP when the floating content is a custom interface such as a timer; choose classic video PiP when the task is to keep a video visible. The relevant API must also be supported by the user’s browser.

Check support and provide a fallback
Before offering an enabled floating-window control, check whether window.documentPictureInPicture exists. MDN classifies the API as limited availability and not Baseline, so do not assume it works across all browsers. It is available only in secure contexts in supporting browsers. Keep the timer usable in the page when the feature is unavailable. MDN API reference and compatibility information

Open a floating timer window
- Detect the API. If
window.documentPictureInPictureis unavailable, hide or disable the floating option and retain the in-page timer. - Wait for a direct user action. Call
requestWindow()in the click handler for an “Open floating timer” control. The call requires transient user activation, so do not defer it until after unrelated asynchronous work. It is limited to a top-level browsing context and cannot be called from inside the PiP window. - Render after the promise resolves.
requestWindow()returns a promise that resolves with the new window object. Use that window’s document to create the timer interface and apply explicit styles; it has its own document context. - Coordinate the timer lifecycle. Keep the main page as the source of timer state if that suits the application, and update the opener’s controls when the PiP window closes. Standard window lifecycle events can be used to observe closure. How state is shared and controls are synchronized is an implementation choice, not behavior guaranteed by the API.
