Create a writer for a selected character, use animateCharacter() to demonstrate the sequence, and use quiz() to let learners draw strokes and report progress through callbacks. Before launch, decide where character data will come from and review the library code and data licenses separately.
What Hanzi Writer does—and what your app still needs
Hanzi Writer is a JavaScript library for Chinese character stroke-order animations and practice quizzes. The project says it supports simplified and traditional characters and uses stroke data derived from Make Me a Hanzi. Its homepage claims coverage of over 9,000 common characters; that is a project-published figure, not an independently verified count. See the Hanzi Writer homepage.

Think of the library as an interactive character component, not a complete learning product. It can show how a character is written and check strokes drawn by the learner. Your interface should provide the character selection, prompt, lesson context, progress display, and explanations that make those interactions useful.
Choose how learners will use each character
Demonstrate the stroke sequence
Use animateCharacter() when the learner needs to see the character written in sequence. Place it behind an explicit control such as “Show strokes” or “Replay,” so the demonstration fits the lesson rather than running without context.

Let learners practise
Use quiz() to let learners draw strokes and receive correctness feedback. The documentation describes callbacks for correct strokes and quiz completion: correct-stroke callbacks can report how many strokes remain, while the completion callback includes a mistake count. Connect those events to your own feedback and progress display—for example, updating a lesson indicator or offering a retry—rather than assuming the library supplies a full lesson flow.
Integrate the library with your interface
The Hanzi Writer documentation describes loading the library through a script tag or installing it with npm. Its examples create a writer instance for a page element and a character, then call methods in response to interface actions. The documented APIs and callbacks are the key integration points; exact setup details should be checked against the package version you choose, since the documentation may not match every current release.

- Choose a character. Build your own selector or lesson sequence and provide the chosen character to the writer instance.
- Reserve a drawing area. Add a page element for the character interaction and create the writer against it, following the setup for your selected package version.
- Provide separate actions. Give learners a way to view the stroke sequence and a distinct way to start active practice.
- Connect callbacks to lesson state. Use correctness and remaining-stroke information to show immediate progress; use the completion result, including mistake count, to decide what feedback or retry your interface should offer.
- Test the whole flow. Check character selection, animation, drawing, callback-driven updates, and the behavior when data cannot load.
The Hanzi Writer demos provide examples of the interaction styles. Treat them as demonstrations, not a substitute for checking the API against the version you plan to ship.

Decide where character data will load from
The documented default loads character-rendering data remotely from jsDelivr. That makes initial setup straightforward, but it means character display can depend on network access and the availability of the remote resource. The documentation also describes a custom character data loader and local character data, including for mobile apps that need offline access or faster local loading.

- Package Include: 1 PCS of chinese character practice book of Song ci, Sheet size: 25 x 16 cm (9.84 x 6.30 inch); 24 Sheets(48 Page), Character size 0.8 x 0.8 cm.
- Great Uses: The main purpose of practicing calligraphy copybooks is to help people improve their calligraphy skills and the aesthetic appeal of their writing. By repeatedly practicing the characters in the copybooks, one can enhance the standardization of character forms and the fluency of strokes, thereby improving writing proficiency. Additionally, calligraphy copybooks also contribute to cultivating good writing habits and enhancing aesthetic appreciation.
- Calligraphy Paper Book Materials: This Chinese calligraphy paper book is made from high-quality eye-friendly paper, featuring clear grey characters and crisp red vertical lines, ideal for practicing with a pen. Its design facilitates precise handwriting practice, emphasizing legibility and stroke consistency, making it an excellent choice for learners and enthusiasts alike.

| Approach | What it means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Documented remote default | Character data is fetched remotely from jsDelivr. | Less data to package with the app, but character loading depends on network access and the remote resource. |
| Local data or a custom loader | Supply local character data or load it through infrastructure you control. | Can support offline use and controlled hosting, but requires packaging or serving the files and maintaining them. Bundled data can increase app size. |
Make this decision early, especially for mobile or classroom use where connectivity may be unreliable. For offline operation, package the required character data with the app or serve it from infrastructure you control, then test the experience without a network connection. Include the data files in the license review before bundling or redistributing them.
Check character coverage against your learners
The project describes support for simplified and traditional characters, but that broad statement does not establish that every regional stroke-order convention or curriculum is covered. If your app targets a particular region, textbook, or exam, validate the characters and stroke conventions that audience will encounter instead of treating the library as a universal authority.

Review the code and data licenses separately
The project repository distinguishes the MIT license for Hanzi Writer’s code from the Arphic Public License terms for its character data. The repository says the stroke SVG and order data derive from Make Me a Hanzi, with some tweaks, and refers to Arphic Technology for the data terms. Do not assume that permission to use the library code automatically answers whether or how you may redistribute character data.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Check the license files for the exact library version you plan to use.
- Review the applicable terms for character data separately, particularly if you bundle it or distribute an offline build.
- Confirm that your intended modifications and distribution method are covered by the relevant terms.
