Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTesting an AWS REST API works best as a progression: verify isolated logic quickly, exercise the API locally, then test the deployed services and configuration automatically. Each layer answers a different question. A local pass is useful feedback, but it cannot prove that API Gateway routing, cloud permissions, or deployed settings work.
What the three test layers prove
| Layer | What it checks | What it cannot establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Unit tests | Isolated business logic, using controlled inputs and expected outputs. | Whether API Gateway routes correctly or AWS permissions allow the deployed interaction. |
| Local API tests | Whether a Lambda-backed request flow behaves as expected in a local development loop. | Whether managed cloud services, deployed configuration, and resource permissions match the simulation. |
| Deployed integration tests | Whether actual services interact correctly with the deployed configuration and policies. | They do not replace focused unit tests or broader end-to-end checks of application behavior. |
AWS recommends unit, integration, and end-to-end testing for serverless applications. The three layers complement rather than replace one another. See the AWS Lambda testing guide.

Start with fast unit tests
Keep business rules separate from AWS service calls where practical, then test them with ordinary inputs, boundary cases, and invalid values. For example, if a handler validates a requested quantity, unit tests can check accepted values and rejection behavior without invoking API Gateway or a cloud database.

These tests are the fastest feedback layer because they focus on code in isolation. A passing unit test says nothing about whether the deployed API route invokes the intended Lambda function; that belongs to later checks.

Use AWS SAM for local API checks
AWS SAM can run Lambda functions locally and expose a local HTTP endpoint for testing functions invoked through API Gateway. This helps iterate on request parsing, handler behavior, and response formatting before deploying. The SAM local API guide describes this workflow.
Treat this as a local simulation, not a miniature copy of AWS. Local execution does not validate every managed-service behavior or cloud-side permission. Also, code running locally can still call real AWS services if configured to do so; use test accounts and data, or explicit mocks, to avoid unintended changes or charges. AWS outlines these limitations in its SAM testing guidance and serverless testing guide.
Test the deployed API and its integrations
Deploy a dedicated test stack and send requests to its API endpoint. Assert the external contract that clients depend on: the HTTP status, response shape, and relevant headers. Include success cases and expected failures, then exercise the service interactions that local checks cannot establish—such as the API-to-Lambda path, deployed settings, and permissions.
AWS describes cloud tests as the most accurate way to reflect serverless code quality because they run with actual services and configuration. Put them in the delivery workflow before promoting a change to later environments. SAM supports automated tests against a local Lambda endpoint and against a deployed stack in CI/CD; see Automate local integration tests with AWS SAM.

Use the API Gateway method test carefully
The API Gateway console’s method test is not a harmless preview: it invokes the method for real, so a destructive request can change real resources. AWS notes that the method-call results are real even though the CloudWatch Logs entries shown in this test view are simulated. When mapping templates or other response mappings are involved, the status, body, or headers displayed can differ from the integration backend’s response. Consult Use the API Gateway console to test a REST API method and avoid running destructive calls against production.
Make test environments reproducible with infrastructure as code
An AWS SAM template is a declarative way to define serverless resources, including functions and API configuration. Keeping that definition with the application makes it possible to create repeatable test stacks rather than relying on undocumented console changes. The SAM infrastructure authoring guide explains the template model.

Use the same infrastructure definition to support local iteration and deployed test environments, while recognizing that those environments are not identical. In a delivery pipeline, deploy the template to an isolated stack, run contract-focused integration requests against its endpoint, and promote only after the checks pass. This gives failures a clearer meaning: a unit failure points toward logic, a local API failure toward request handling, and a cloud integration failure toward the deployed path, configuration, or permissions.
Keep API documentation aligned with the API
Machine-readable OpenAPI definitions can help keep an API contract explicit. API Gateway supports creating HTTP APIs from OpenAPI 3.0 definitions, and REST APIs can be exported as OpenAPI 3.0 for migration workflows. These capabilities do not by themselves guarantee that a published documentation page is current; the team still needs to define which file or system is authoritative and how changes reach the reader-facing docs. See AWS’s guide to OpenAPI definitions for HTTP APIs and the API Gateway documentation.
Choose API Gateway API type by required features
API Gateway REST APIs and HTTP APIs are distinct products with different feature sets. AWS characterizes REST APIs as offering more customization, integration, and management features, while HTTP APIs provide a smaller feature set. Choose based on the functionality your API requires rather than assuming the types are interchangeable. Review AWS’s API Gateway and Lambda overview and integration type guidance before settling on a design.
