Build Your First AI Agent: A Practical Python Path for Data Science Students

A practical path from data-science Python skills to a bounded AI agent: choose a small task, build a one-agent baseline, add a narrow tool, and inspect results.

Build a first AI agent by giving a language model one clearly bounded job, then adding a narrow tool only if the job requires it. Start with a task you can verify—such as answering questions about a course document or calculating a summary from a permitted dataset—and inspect what the agent does before trusting its answer.

What counts as a first AI agent?

For a beginner project, an agent can be a small program that combines a language model, instructions, and—when needed—one or more tools. It does not have to operate autonomously or make consequential decisions. A useful first workflow is: receive a request, let the model select an appropriate next step, call a tool if needed, inspect the tool’s result, and return a final answer.

Keep the system’s behavior observable. Record the request, tool selected, validated inputs, tool output, errors, and final response. You do not need to expose or rely on private internal reasoning to understand whether the agent behaved as intended.

Choose a small, testable job

Pick information you understand and can check. For example, an agent could answer questions using a course handout, or call a read-only function that filters a permitted local dataset and returns a summary. Avoid starting with a job that changes files, sends messages, or affects people or systems outside your project.

Before coding, write representative requests and the expected behavior for each. Include a case with missing information and one that is ambiguous or outside the agent’s scope. These examples give you a practical way to compare runs; there is no established universal number of cases that every first project should use.

Choose a Python starting path

The frameworks below are examples of credible learning paths, not a complete market survey. The available official materials do not establish a universal winner or a controlled comparison of speed, answer quality, or cost.

Path What the official learning material offers Useful fit
OpenAI Agents SDK A code-first Python quickstart for installing the package and running a first agent, with documentation on tools, orchestration, guardrails, handoffs, sessions, tracing, and debugging. A short route if you want to begin with one Python agent and add a tool when the task needs one.
Google ADK Python and other language guides, plus an introductory codelab. That codelab specifies Python 3.10+ and a Google AI Studio API key for its tutorial. A route if you want to follow Google’s agent-development materials and meet that tutorial’s setup requirements.
LangChain and LangGraph Learning materials include Python tutorials for data analysis and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) agents. A route if those tutorial topics or the framework’s workflow abstractions match your project.

Choose based on the language and examples you can learn from, model-provider support and credentials, how functions and tool results are represented, whether you need state or branching, and how clearly you can inspect runs. Also consider whether you need provider-specific hosted tools or want to keep model calls and tools replaceable. Check current provider terms and pricing before running hosted models; credentials and usage costs may apply.

Build a first version in small steps

1. Define the boundary

Write down what information the agent receives, what it should return, and what it must not do. For a course-document question-answering project, for example, limit the answers to that document and tell the agent to say when the source does not support an answer.

2. Set up Python and credentials

Follow the chosen framework’s current official quickstart, since setup instructions and versions can change. The OpenAI Python quickstart shows installing the package with pip install openai-agents and configuring an OPENAI_API_KEY. Google’s ADK codelab specifies Python 3.10+ and a Google AI Studio key for that tutorial. Keep keys in environment variables or a secrets manager; never commit them to a notebook or repository.

3. Run one agent before adding tools

Create one focused agent with a clear role, instructions, and an expected output. Run it on a few of your prepared examples and confirm that the basic interaction works before adding tools or multiple agents. OpenAI’s Agents SDK documentation describes the SDK as an orchestration layer; its quickstart notes, “The first capability you add is often a function tool or a hosted OpenAI tool such as web search or file search.” OpenAI Agents SDK Python Quickstart.

4. Add one narrowly scoped tool if needed

A tool can be an ordinary function that filters a permitted dataset or computes a deterministic statistic. Give it explicit inputs and outputs, validate arguments, and return a compact result the model can use. Start read-only. If a later version needs to take an external or consequential action, require explicit human confirmation rather than letting the model execute it on its own.

5. Inspect and evaluate runs

Compare actual runs with your prepared examples. Check whether the answer is factually supported, whether the agent chose the right tool, whether its arguments were valid, and how it handles missing data and errors. Inspect the tool result as well as the final answer: a polished response can still be based on an incorrect or incomplete result. The OpenAI SDK documents tracing and debugging support, but a trace makes activity easier to inspect; it does not prove that the answer is correct.

6. Add complexity only to solve a real problem

Add persistence if the task needs continuity across interactions, guardrails if inputs or outputs need checks, or multiple agents only if independently scoped specialists provide a measurable benefit. Frameworks make certain patterns easier to implement; they do not replace application-level validation and testing.

What to learn next

Use the official materials for the specific framework you selected: OpenAI Agents SDK overview, OpenAI Agents SDK agent concepts, Google ADK getting started, and LangChain learning materials. Follow one path through a working baseline, then return to your test cases when you change the instructions, tools, or workflow.
