Microsoft Agent Framework and Auth0 can be combined to build a signed-in AI agent, but login alone does not decide which records that agent may access. In the first installment of Auth0’s tutorial series, a server-side Blazor expense-approval app passes a user’s Auth0 identity into an agent tool and keys saved conversation sessions by user. Its sample expense data is hardcoded, however, and the tool does not yet filter expenses by manager. Record-level authorization must be enforced at the tool or data boundary before information is returned to the model.
What the tutorial builds—and what it does not
Auth0 Principal Developer Advocate Andrea Chiarelli’s August 3, 2026 tutorial, Building Secure AI Agents with Microsoft Agent Framework and Auth0: User Authentication, walks through a C# Blazor expense-approval agent. The app uses Auth0 for interactive sign-in, Microsoft Agent Framework to define an AIAgent and function tool, and Azure AI Foundry to host the example model, gpt-4.1-mini.
The user can ask the agent questions such as “Show me the pending expense reports” and “Which ones are missing information?” The tutorial demonstrates carrying the signed-in user’s Auth0 identifier into the tool object and saving serialized conversation state in a cache under a user-specific session key. Those are useful identity-context patterns, but they are not a substitute for authorization checks on the underlying records.
In this installment, the expense reports are hardcoded, and the manager ID passed to the tool is not yet used to restrict results. The article describes a later installment that will introduce Auth0 Fine-Grained Authorization (FGA), a vector database, and manager-scoped retrieval so managers see expenses for their direct reports. Do not treat that planned behavior as a capability of the first sample.

How identity should flow through an agent
“The identity flows through the whole system, not just the login screen,” Chiarelli writes. For a secure implementation, that means keeping the principal associated with the request as the app invokes the agent, while ensuring the actual tool or data-access layer checks what that principal is allowed to see or do.
- Authenticate the person or workload. For an interactive Blazor user, establish a trusted sign-in and obtain the authenticated user context.
- Pass the relevant identity context to the agent’s tools. The sample reads the user’s Auth0 identifier and provides it to its expense-report tool. Keep that context tied to the current request rather than trusting a user ID supplied in a prompt.
- Authorize at the resource boundary. Before returning reports to the model, the tool should verify that the current identity can access each requested record. A user-specific cache key prevents one user’s saved conversation state from being keyed as another user’s; it does not authorize access to expense data.
- Return only permitted data. Tools should provide the model only the records and fields needed for the authorized task. Do not rely on prompt wording or model behavior to enforce access restrictions.
This separation matters because a language model can request a tool call, but the application remains responsible for deciding whether that call is allowed and what data it returns.

Choose the authentication flow for the agent’s actor
The right flow depends on whether the agent is acting for a signed-in user or operating independently. Microsoft’s Microsoft Entra security for AI overview distinguishes interactive agents using delegated permissions from autonomous agents using their own identity. Auth0 likewise documents user authentication, machine-to-machine authentication, and delegated access patterns in User Authentication for AI Agents.
| Scenario | Identity used | Typical pattern | Key control |
|---|---|---|---|
| A signed-in person asks the agent to act within their access | The user, through delegated authorization | On-behalf-of token exchange or a Token Vault pattern, as described by Auth0 | Enforce the user’s resource-level permissions for each tool call |
| A scheduled or background agent runs independently | The agent or workload’s own identity | Machine-to-machine authentication; Auth0 documents client credentials, mTLS, and Private Key JWT | Grant only the workload’s narrowly required permissions and make its owner identifiable |
These are not interchangeable choices. A background process should not impersonate a person simply because a user originally configured it. Conversely, when an agent acts on a person’s behalf, using only a broad service identity can lose the user-specific authorization boundary unless the application carries and enforces delegated context.

Use a login experience that limits credential exposure
For user login, Auth0 recommends Universal Login: users authenticate on a hosted page rather than entering credentials directly into the application. Embedded login offers more control over the interface, but the application team must handle credential entry and secure transmission, and Auth0 describes it as more complex to maintain.
| Consideration | Universal Login | Embedded login |
|---|---|---|
| Credential handling | Credentials are entered on the hosted Auth0 page, not directly in the app | The application handles credential input and secure communication |
| Customization | Less direct control over the login UI than an in-app form | More control over the login interface |
| Implementation and maintenance | Auth0’s recommended approach for user login | More complex for the application team to implement and maintain |
| Typical context | Most applications that need interactive user authentication | Cases where an embedded experience is required and the team can take on the additional security and maintenance burden |
Limit tools, permissions, and sensitive actions
Authentication answers who is making a request. It does not answer whether the agent should be able to call a particular tool, retrieve a particular record, or approve a particular expense. Microsoft’s Least privilege for AI agents with Microsoft Entra Agent ID recommends treating agent identities and permissions as resources that need ownership, review, and operational controls.

- Give each agent a distinct identity and accountable owner. Avoid sharing an identity across unrelated agents or workloads.
- Review effective permissions. Check what the identity can actually access, not only the permissions originally intended.
- Deny unreviewed tools by default. Allowlist the functions the agent needs; do not expose every operation available to the application.
- Gate consequential actions. Require human approval for high-impact operations where appropriate, and use time-limited elevation rather than permanent broad access.
- Log enough to investigate. Record the agent identity, relevant user or delegated identity, scope, action, and correlation details, while applying appropriate privacy and retention controls.
- Test revocation and disablement. Confirm operators can disable the agent and revoke its credentials or tokens promptly, including during an incident.
Account for agent-specific threats
Microsoft’s Microsoft Entra security for AI overview identifies risks including prompt injection, external exposure, and permission escalation. An agent may process untrusted text that tries to influence its behavior, but the security boundary should remain in application code: a prompt cannot grant access, and a tool must validate authorization independently of the model’s request.
Assess each tool against four questions: who is the agent acting as, which resources and actions are authorized, which tools are explicitly allowed and which actions require approval, and whether audit logs plus a tested revocation path support response to misuse. This keeps the controls attached to the operations that can expose data or change state, rather than assuming a successful login makes later actions safe.

Prerequisites and implementation scope
The Auth0 tutorial lists the .NET 10 SDK, an Auth0 CLI and account, an Azure account with an Azure AI Foundry resource, and basic familiarity with Blazor. Its template scaffolds a Blazor Web App with Auth0 authentication and login/logout routes. Azure AI Foundry and gpt-4.1-mini are the tutorial’s selected model-hosting setup, not a claim that this model or configuration is the current best choice for every production agent.
The architecture consists of a server-side Blazor app, an AIAgent built on an IChatClient-compatible service, a GetExpenseReports() function tool, and serialized session state cached under a per-user key. For a production system, the critical extension is not merely replacing sample data with a database: the tool’s retrieval query and any downstream service must enforce the authenticated user’s authorization before content reaches the agent.
