Use Android’s Geofencing API to detect entry and exit in the background, rather than polling GPS continuously. When a transition needs more detail, start fused-location updates temporarily, then stop them when they are no longer needed. This event-driven design follows Android’s battery guidance; it does not guarantee a particular battery saving or instant alerts on every device.
How the low-power design works
Separate coarse background detection from precise, short-lived tracking. Register circular geofences for the places that matter, deliver transitions through a PendingIntent to a receiver, and do only the work appropriate to that event. Android describes geofencing as an excellent fit for long-running background location tied to geographic areas and says the API is optimized for performance. See Android’s location-use scenarios and the geofencing guide.

- Register only relevant circles. Each fence uses a latitude, longitude, and radius. Request only the transitions the experience needs: enter and exit for boundary-based behavior, or dwell when a user must remain in an area before action is taken.
- Handle transitions in the background. The receiver can inspect the transition and triggering geofences, then schedule appropriate work or send a notification. Do not launch an activity directly from a geofence transition; if the user needs to open the app, invite them through the notification.
- Escalate precision only after a trigger. If an enter event requires detailed location, request fused-location updates while the user is in the relevant area and remove those updates on exit.
- Stop monitoring when the feature ends. Remove geofences when the user disables the feature or the monitored task is complete, rather than leaving registrations active indefinitely.
This divides the work by need: the geofence provides a lower-power background trigger, while higher-detail updates are reserved for the period in which the feature actually needs them.

Choose alert timing to match the experience
Geofence alerts are not instantaneous. On Android 8.0 (API 26) and higher, background location limits mean geofence events may be delivered only every couple of minutes. Android says latency is usually under two minutes, averages around two to three minutes when background limits apply, and can reach six minutes after the device has been stationary. These are platform guidance figures, not a per-device service guarantee; see the geofencing documentation.

Set responsiveness according to what the user is doing. Android’s location-use guidance, last updated February 26, 2026, recommends about five minutes for notification responsiveness and suggests about ten minutes when added delay is acceptable. For dwell transitions, it recommends a loitering delay of approximately five minutes or less. A brief delay can reduce unnecessary alerts when someone merely passes a place; a shorter delay can be more suitable when a prompt matters sooner, but it cannot remove background delivery limits.
Use detailed updates only for as long as needed
Give every location request a stopping condition. For fused-location requests, Android documents setDurationMillis() as a way to set a timeout; for geofences, use setExpirationDuration() so registrations do not persist past their useful lifetime. Also explicitly remove updates or fences when the feature is no longer active. Android’s battery optimization guidance, last updated February 26, 2026, covers timeouts and other battery practices.
Batch work that does not need an immediate response
For non-foreground location requests, use setMaxUpdateDelayMillis() to allow delivery in batches rather than waking the device for every sample. Android illustrates a ten-minute computation interval with a one-hour maximum delivery delay: approximately six data points can arrive together about once an hour, with fewer device wakeups. That is an example of the batching trade-off, not a universal setting; use it only when the feature can tolerate delayed data.

Use a foreground service only when frequent tracking is essential
If the product genuinely needs frequent, high-accuracy tracking while the user interacts with other apps, Android recommends a foreground service with a persistent notification. That option makes ongoing tracking visible and imposes a user-facing cost; it is not a stealth substitute for battery-efficient geofencing.
Plan around fence limits and changing locations
Android permits up to 100 active geofences per app per device user. For a larger set of places, Android’s scenario guidance suggests registering a larger region, such as a city, then dynamically adding smaller fences within it as they become relevant. This keeps the active set within the documented limit while avoiding the need to monitor every small location at once. See the geofencing guide and location-use scenarios.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make background permission part of the product design
Background access should be requested only when it is critical to a clear, user-facing feature, and its benefit should be obvious to the user. For apps targeting Android 10 (API 29) or later that need all-the-time access, account for ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION. Permission flows and platform requirements vary by Android version, so use the current Android background-location guidance when implementing and explaining access. Google Play also places restrictions on background location; meeting Android technical guidance alone does not guarantee Play approval.

Set realistic expectations for accuracy and reliability
A geofence is a circle, not a precise property line. Small radii may fail to trigger as expected, and results vary by device, Android version, network connectivity, Wi-Fi availability, and whether the device has been stationary. Geofence triggering may rely on network location because it uses less power and can work indoors. Wi-Fi can improve accuracy; when Wi-Fi location is unavailable, Android notes that accuracy can degrade to hundreds of meters or kilometers and recommends larger radii in those conditions. The geofencing guide details these limitations.
Choose a radius that suits the consequence of a late or missed transition, and validate behavior under the conditions users will encounter. Do not promise an exact boundary crossing or a fixed alert time across devices. Where a missed event would be costly, design a recovery path in the app rather than treating a geofence as a guaranteed real-time sensor.
Choose the right location primitive
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Geofencing | Background enter, exit, or dwell behavior around defined areas | Lower-power area trigger, but alert timing and boundary accuracy vary with platform limits and conditions. |
| Fused-location updates | More detailed location during a short, relevant window, such as after entering a region | Provides the detail needed for the active task; constrain it with a timeout and remove it when finished. |
| Foreground service with location | Frequent, high-accuracy tracking that must continue while the user uses other apps | Requires a persistent notification and makes the ongoing tracking visible to the user. |
For most region-triggered background features, use geofencing as the trigger and activate detailed updates only when the event justifies them. Reserve continuous foreground tracking for products whose core function truly requires it.
