Build Android Geofencing Around Events, Not Constant GPS Polling

Use Android geofences for delayed entry and exit events, then request more detailed location only when a feature needs it. Learn how to manage regions, permissions, latency, and recovery without constant background GPS polling.

Use Android geofences as low-power entry and exit triggers—not as continuous GPS tracking or a promise of instant boundary detection. Register only the places relevant to the user, tolerate delays measured in minutes, and start more frequent fused-location updates only while a feature needs finer detail. Stop those updates when the user leaves. This staged design can reduce unnecessary location work, but its reliability depends on device conditions, radius, connectivity, and permissions.

What should a low-power geofencing engine do?

Android’s Geofencing API is built on the Fused Location Provider and is optimized for battery performance. It is intended to notify an app about region transitions, rather than support a high-frequency background GPS polling loop. The key architectural choice is to separate coarse event detection from any precise location work that a feature may need afterward. Android’s background location and battery guidance and its real-world location scenarios describe this approach.

Think of a geofence as a request for the system to tell the app when a device is believed to enter or exit a region. It is not a continuously observed boundary, nor does a transition guarantee that an app will react at the exact crossing point. Since Android 8.0 (API 26), background location updates are limited to a few times per hour; geofence notifications under those limits are therefore best treated as delayed events, not real-time tracking.

How should regions and location work be managed?

Keep desired regions separate from active registrations

Maintain an app-side record of which regions should be active for the user, then reconcile that desired set with the geofences registered through Android. This makes registration recoverable after restarts and helps prevent stale regions from accumulating. Register only places that are relevant now: Android documents a limit of 100 geofences per app. For a much larger catalog, register a broad outer region first, load nearby smaller target regions after the device enters it, and retire those smaller regions when it exits. See Android’s geofence creation and monitoring guide.

Use transitions to gate more detailed fixes

For a feature such as “near home,” “near work,” or “at a store,” let the geofence entry wake the feature. If it genuinely needs a finer-grained location while the user is nearby, request fused-location updates for that period only; remove them after exit or when the feature no longer needs them. Give those requests a sensible duration and avoid leaving high-accuracy work running indefinitely.

This staged approach reduces avoidable work, but it does not guarantee a particular battery saving. Power use depends on requested accuracy, sampling frequency, and how long delivery may be delayed. Choose balanced or low-power settings and batching when they meet the feature’s needs; sustained high-accuracy updates cost more. Android discusses these trade-offs in its background location guidance.

How should radius, accuracy, and delay be chosen?

Radius and notification responsiveness are product decisions, not universal constants. Android recommends a minimum radius of about 100–150 meters for best results and suggests a responsiveness value of five minutes or greater to preserve power. A very small radius may sound precise but can be less dependable when the device’s estimated location is less accurate than that radius.

Design choice Platform guidance Practical implication
Geofence radius Android recommends about 100–150 m or larger for best results. Match the boundary to the place and positioning conditions; do not assume a small radius yields a more useful alert.
Geofence responsiveness Five minutes or greater is suggested to preserve power; Android’s background battery guidance describes approximately two minutes of responsiveness under background limits. Allow delay that fits the user-facing feature. A short configured value is not a guarantee of delivery within that time.
Location accuracy with Wi-Fi Android describes typical accuracy of roughly 20–50 m when Wi-Fi is available. These are platform-described typical conditions, not a promise for a particular device or place.
Location accuracy without Wi-Fi Android says accuracy may degrade to hundreds of meters or several kilometers in some conditions. A tight radius may be missed or delayed; consider whether the feature remains useful without Wi-Fi-assisted location.

These figures are Android platform guidance, not measurements of a particular app. Latency is usually under two minutes according to Android, around two to three minutes on average under background limits, and can reach six minutes after a device has remained stationary for a significant period. Connectivity, device differences, radius, Wi-Fi availability, and time spent stationary can all affect results. Android also notes that geofencing depends on the network location provider, so reliable data connectivity matters. See Android’s background location limits documentation.

How should background permissions be explained?

Ask for only the access the feature requires and explain its user-facing benefit before requesting it. If the app must detect a transition while it is not in use, make that background behavior clear rather than presenting the request as a generic location requirement. For Android 10 (API 29) and later, background geofencing access requires the ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION permission. Permission handling is part of the product design, not just an implementation detail.

Platform best practices do not guarantee approval under Google Play policy. Review the current platform and Play requirements for the app’s specific use case before release; Android’s geofencing guidance discusses permission and policy considerations.

What happens when registrations or updates need recovery?

Make cleanup explicit and treat registrations as recoverable state. Remove fused-location updates when they are no longer needed, set appropriate request durations and geofence expirations, and reconcile the active set with the app’s desired regions after events that can disrupt registrations. The recovery cases described in Android guidance include device reboot, app reinstall, app-data clearing, Play services data clearing, and a GEOFENCE_NOT_AVAILABLE condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some Play services upgrades and system-managed restarts restore geofence registrations automatically, but an app should not assume every registration will persist through every lifecycle event. Re-register the regions the user still needs when recovery is appropriate. Android’s location scenarios guide covers practical location patterns and lifecycle considerations.

What should be validated before shipping?

Before making product-specific claims about accuracy, alert timing, or battery life, validate the design across representative devices and location settings. Compare the requirements on four dimensions: how much delay users will tolerate, what boundary precision is useful, how many places and how densely they are distributed, and how much permission friction and background disclosure the feature can reasonably ask of users. Include conditions with Wi-Fi disabled and extended stationary periods, since both can change transition behavior.

For non-foreground location updates, request the largest workable interval and allow batching when immediate delivery is unnecessary. Android’s documentation gives an illustrative example of computing location about every ten minutes and delivering a batch about every hour. That is an API example, not a guaranteed schedule or a battery benchmark for an individual app.
