A Phillips #2 screwdriver is the one tool to put at the center of a DIY PC kit. A magnetic tip and parts tray make small screws easier to manage; cable ties and an anti-static wrist strap are optional, while thermal paste is worth buying only if your cooler does not already include it.
1. Magnetic Phillips screwdriver set: the essential pick
Intel’s PC build guide recommends a Phillips #2 screwdriver for most assembly. Some M.2 installations may call for a smaller Phillips #0, so a set with both sizes covers more of the small fasteners you may encounter. Check the instructions for your specific motherboard, drive, and case before choosing a bit.

A magnetic tip can help keep screws on the driver while you work. Intel says magnetic screwdrivers help prevent screws from dropping inside the case and “shouldn’t damage components.” Treat that as practical guidance, not a guarantee for every tool or component; use the driver carefully and avoid letting it scrape or press against parts.
2. Magnetic parts tray or divided organizer
Put loose screws and hardware somewhere they cannot roll off the work surface. Intel suggests a magnetic tray or another divided container, and NVIDIA’s build guide also includes a magnetic parts tray among useful tools. A household organizer with separate compartments can serve the same basic purpose if you do not have a magnetic tray.

Keeping fasteners apart makes it easier to find the right piece when you move between the case, motherboard, and storage. Keep any screws that came with a component together with that component until its manual tells you where they go.
3. Cable ties or hook-and-loop straps
Cable ties help bundle cables after the components are installed, but they are not required to assemble a working PC. Intel lists zip ties and mentions twist ties or Velcro straps as alternatives; Corsair’s tool guidance also includes cable ties and snippers.

Reusable hook-and-loop straps are convenient if you expect to rearrange or replace cables. Whichever type you use, secure cables without pulling hard on connectors or pinching wires.
4. Anti-static wrist strap: an optional precaution
An anti-static wrist strap is useful for some builders, but Intel describes it as helpful rather than strictly necessary. If you use one, follow the strap’s instructions and the handling guidance supplied with your components. AMD says the strap should fit snugly against your skin and connect to an unpainted metal contact in the system; see its processor handling guidance.

NVIDIA’s GeForce Garage tool list, published March 9, 2015, also includes a wrist strap. For build-specific handling and grounding instructions, follow your component manuals rather than assuming one setup applies to every system.
5. Thermal paste: buy it only if your cooler needs it
Check the CPU cooler’s packaging and manual before adding paste to your kit. Some coolers come with thermal paste already applied; Intel and Corsair both note that separate paste is needed if the cooler lacks it. NVIDIA’s build guide also covers thermal paste as part of CPU cooler installation.

If paste is pre-applied, you generally do not need to buy an extra tube just to complete the initial installation. If it is not included, follow the cooler or processor instructions for application rather than guessing at an amount or method.

Use the motherboard and cooler manuals for model-specific steps. Connector locations, front-panel pin layouts, mounting details, and cooler installation procedures vary. A useful kit supports the instructions for your exact parts; it does not replace them.
