Use one canvas as the untouched pixel source and a second as the loupe display. Read the selected color only from the source canvas; draw the magnified image and its marker on the display canvas. This separation prevents the loupe’s own pixels from contaminating later samples. It is a sound implementation pattern, not a requirement imposed by the Canvas API.
Why separate the pixel source from the loupe
getImageData() reads pixel data from a specified rectangle of a canvas’s backing bitmap. MDN describes the returned value as “an ImageData object representing the underlying pixel data for a specified portion of the canvas.” MDN’s getImageData() reference documents the readback API, while its canvas pixel-manipulation tutorial demonstrates reading the pixel under a pointer and displaying its color.

Those APIs do not mandate two canvases. The architectural reason to use them is to keep the sampled image stable: if you draw the loupe or selection marker onto the same canvas you sample, those drawn pixels can become part of a later read. With separate canvases, the source context owns the image and readback, while the display context owns magnification and overlays.

| Canvas | Responsibility | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Holds the image bitmap used for sampling. | Call getImageData() on its 2D context. |
| Loupe display | Shows the magnified image region and pointer or selection marker. | Draw the visual preview and overlays; do not read the selected color from it. |
Map pointer positions to source-canvas pixels
Before calling getImageData(x, y, width, height), convert the pointer location into the source canvas’s pixel coordinate space. A pointer position from a browser event is not automatically a backing-bitmap coordinate: the canvas may be displayed at a different CSS size, and the image may itself be scaled or positioned within it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep that mapping explicit in the application. MDN notes that getImageData() is not affected by the canvas transformation matrix, so a transform used to scale or move drawing does not adjust the readback coordinates for you. The API takes canvas pixel coordinates. The reviewed documentation does not prescribe a universal mapping formula; it depends on how the image is laid out and scaled.
Also account for the requested rectangle. If any part of a getImageData() region falls outside the canvas bitmap, the out-of-bounds pixels are transparent black. For a one-pixel picker, validate or clamp the source coordinates to the image bounds so an edge click does not unexpectedly return that value.

Draw the loupe without changing the sampled image
Use the source canvas as the input to the magnification step and the display canvas as its output. Draw the relevant source region enlarged on the display canvas, then draw any crosshair, outline, or pointer marker there as well. Keep subsequent color reads pointed at the source context, not the display context. This is what makes the displayed loupe useful without allowing its decoration to alter the pixel being sampled.

The exact event handler, source-region size, magnification factor, and drawing algorithm are choices for the application; the API references establish the readback and pixel-manipulation building blocks, not a prescribed loupe implementation.

Account for readback workload and color space
If the picker performs frequent pixel reads, consider the willReadFrequently option when creating the source 2D context. MDN says it can force a software canvas and may save memory when getImageData() is called often. This is a workload hint, not proof that it will improve speed in every browser or for every design; profile the actual application before making a performance claim. MDN’s getContext() reference documents the option and was last modified July 2, 2025.
Color values also depend on the context’s color-space assumptions. The default is sRGB, and Display-P3 can be requested. If the picker displays or copies a color value, make clear which color-space interpretation it uses rather than assuming every image and output share the same one. See MDN’s getContext() documentation for context settings.

Handle images that cannot be read back
Canvas readback can fail with a SecurityError when the canvas contains image content loaded cross-origin without permission for canvas use through CORS. The image must be served with appropriate cross-origin authorization for the browser to allow pixel access. If readback fails, check the image’s origin and CORS configuration rather than treating it as a coordinate or loupe-drawing defect. MDN lists this exception in its getImageData() reference.
