To create a web app for live chat support, choose first between building your own chat workflow and embedding a hosted support widget. Build custom when you need control over the interface, data, or agent workflow; use a hosted widget when getting support online quickly and relying on vendor-managed operations matters more. Either way, a complete service needs more than a live connection: it needs a visitor interface, message delivery, stored conversations, an agent workspace, access controls, and a plan for deployment and operations.
Choose between a custom app and a hosted widget
Decide based on what your support process needs—not on whether a particular technology can open a WebSocket connection.

- Build custom if your app needs a distinctive chat interface, direct control over conversation data and retention, or workflows integrated with your own identity and business systems. You will also own the agent interface, authorization, retries, and ongoing operations.
- Embed a hosted widget if you want to add support to existing pages without building the chat backend and agent tools yourself. Zendesk’s documentation covers configuring Web Widget (Classic), forms and security settings, then adding its provided snippet to pages where visitors can request support: Adding live chat to your website or help center. Its setup guidance also distinguishes Chat-only from Chat plus Support: Setting up live chat.
Compare the approaches on interface and workflow control, time to launch, data access and retention, identity integration, agent assignment and transcript tools, fit with existing support processes, expected operating cost at your expected scale, and vendor dependency. The cited setup materials do not establish a universal price or service-limit comparison, so assess costs against your own expected conversation volume, agent count, retention needs, and integrations.
Map the parts of a complete chat system
A support chat combines a visitor experience with an agent workflow and a trusted data layer. A real-time connection delivers events; persistence and application logic make those events into usable support conversations.

- Real-time delivery: carries new messages and status changes between the visitor and agent interfaces.
- Conversation storage: preserves message history and the records needed to retrieve and manage conversations.

- Authentication and authorization: establishes who is acting and which conversations they may access.
- Operational behavior: defines what happens on disconnects, retries, duplicate submissions, delayed delivery and escalation.
Supabase documents WebSocket servers for bidirectional browser communication and low-latency Realtime Broadcast. Those are useful delivery building blocks, not a complete support product: you still need to design conversation storage, agent tools, permissions and delivery behavior. Choose an implementation path
Use a managed application stack for a learning-oriented build
Firebase’s AngularFire web codelab walks through a web chat implementation using Firestore, Firebase Storage, Firebase Authentication, Firebase App Hosting, Firebase Cloud Messaging and performance monitoring: Build a chat app with Angular and Firebase. It is a practical educational route if you want to work through a managed stack rather than assemble every service independently.

The codelab lists a GitHub account, code editor, and npm/Node.js among its prerequisites. It also notes that the exercise may require upgrading the project to the Blaze billing plan. Billing requirements and product steps can change, so check the current Firebase console and plan terms before starting.
Use a real-time backend with explicit application design
Supabase Edge Functions can host WebSocket servers for browser communication such as chat and live updates. Its Realtime Broadcast can deliver messages through client libraries, REST, or database-triggered broadcasts. Before implementing, decide where messages are persisted, how conversation records are authorized, and how visitors and agents join the right channels.

The Realtime protocol reference describes a WebSocket connection URL and a channel-join step: Realtime protocol. Treat protocol details as implementation-specific and consult the current reference or SDK documentation when coding.
Embed a hosted support widget
With a hosted widget, follow the vendor’s current setup flow to configure appearance, forms and security, then place the generated snippet only on pages where visitors should be able to start a chat. Confirm which product combination and features are available to your account; labels and setup screens may change.

Secure identity, conversations, and channels
Authenticate the WebSocket connection deliberately
Browser WebSocket APIs do not let a client attach arbitrary custom headers. Supabase therefore notes that the usual authorization-header pattern cannot authenticate browser WebSocket clients to Edge Functions. Its guidance describes alternatives such as passing a JWT in a query parameter or a custom protocol, followed by explicit validation: WebSockets in Edge Functions. Follow the current platform guidance and avoid placing privileged server credentials in browser code.

Authorize stored data separately from channel subscriptions
A channel’s public-subscription setting is not a database access policy. Supabase warns that making a Realtime channel public affects who may subscribe; it does not itself govern who can read stored messages. Apply explicit authorization to conversation records as well as channel access, and test that a visitor cannot read or write another visitor’s conversation: Realtime Broadcast.

Use HTTPS and protect public endpoints
Deploy production web apps over HTTPS. Firebase’s PWA guidance explains that PWAs must be served securely and describes Firebase Hosting support for HTTPS certificates, custom domains and a CDN: Build Progressive Web Apps. If you add an AI-facing public endpoint, Firebase’s customer-support AI codelab recommends App Check to help ensure requests originate from your web app and warns against allowing localhost domains in production configuration: Build an AI-powered customer support agent. Keep sensitive business rules and authorization in a trusted server-side layer, and provide a route to a human agent.
Decide what chat should do offline
Offline support is a product decision, not an automatic consequence of using a platform with local caching. Firebase documents Firestore offline persistence, service-worker asset caching and authentication-state behavior in its PWA guidance: Build Progressive Web Apps. These capabilities do not define how your support messages queue, expire, reconcile, or appear to agents after a connection returns. Specify and test those behaviors for your chosen stack; if reliable offline messaging is not a requirement, make that limitation clear in the interface.
Test the failure cases and operating rules
Before launch, test the actual boundaries of the support workflow, not just whether one browser can send a message to another.

- Retry a send after a timeout and check whether it creates duplicate messages.
- Try to access a conversation from a different visitor account and from an agent role that should not have access.
- Check what visitors see when no agent is available, a conversation is transferred, or the service is unavailable.
- Decide who can see transcripts, how long they are retained, how deletion works, and what privacy notices or escalation rules apply to your business and jurisdiction.
Platform features alone do not establish legal compliance. Define the applicable privacy and retention requirements for your operation rather than assuming that a chat provider or database setting resolves them.
