Yes—you can build a smart home security system without a required monthly software fee. A local controller such as Home Assistant can connect compatible sensors and automate an alarm at home; cameras and professional monitoring are separate choices, and hardware still costs money. The system described here is a practical design, not a claim about a particular installed build or its tested performance.
What “no subscription required” includes—and what it does not
Home Assistant says its software has no subscription requirement and no features behind a paywall. You still need hardware to run it, and optional services such as Home Assistant Cloud can cost extra. That distinction matters: a subscription-free controller does not automatically include cameras, storage, remote access, or professional monitoring. A self-monitored system can send alerts or trigger a siren, but neither function is the same as a staffed monitoring service that can request emergency dispatch. The documented options here establish device and integration capabilities, not an emergency-response service.

Local streaming, local recording, NAS storage, and cloud storage are different features; verify the specific recording path and retention details rather than assuming that “local” covers every camera function.

Build around the jobs the system must do
1. Run a controller at home
Home Assistant can run on dedicated hardware such as Green or suitable existing hardware. It coordinates compatible devices and automations; it does not supply the sensors, siren, or camera system by itself. The software is free, while the hardware and any optional paid services are separate.
2. Detect entry and movement
Use door or window contact sensors and motion sensors where detection is needed. Local protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome can allow devices to communicate with Home Assistant without an internet connection, provided the chosen device and integration support the needed functions. 3. Decide how the alarm and alerts should work
A locally triggered automation can activate a compatible siren or other device when a sensor changes state. Phone notifications and remote control add dependencies: the phone, local network, internet connection, and any remote-access service may affect whether an alert reaches you away from home. The documented capabilities do not establish delivery under every outage condition, so do not treat a notification as guaranteed emergency response.

Choose video separately from intrusion detection. Decide whether you need live viewing, recording to a camera card, recording to a NAS, or cloud storage; then check the camera’s exact options and any setup requirements. The Aqara and Reolink examples offer different advertised local-storage routes, not proof that every feature works without cloud services.

Will Home Assistant work if the internet goes out?
Local devices can continue communicating with Home Assistant over the home network when the internet is unavailable. Home Assistant says devices using local protocols including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome do not need an internet connection to communicate locally. Cloud-only devices, by contrast, cannot be reached by their integrations while their cloud connection is down. Home Assistant’s internet FAQ explains the difference.
Local control improves resilience to an internet outage, but it does not make the entire system independent of power or the home network. A power cut, router failure, controller failure, or unavailable phone can still interrupt parts of the setup. A UPS or battery backup is a design consideration; runtime depends on the specific equipment and configuration, and no runtime is established here.

Check device compatibility before buying
Protocol support is not a guarantee that every function on a particular product will appear. Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation says it supports standard Zigbee device types but does not provide an official device-by-device out-of-the-box compatibility list; some manufacturers use nonstandard behavior. Check the exact model and the functions you need—such as battery status, tamper detection, or sensor state—against current device-specific documentation or community reports. ZHA’s documentation sets out this limitation.

Pairing does not guarantee that every device will create entities in Home Assistant. Review the integration’s supported-device notes before relying on a feature. Can existing wired alarm sensors be reused?
Potentially. A retrofit such as Konnected can connect existing wired alarm circuits to a smart-home platform, which may avoid replacing usable wired sensors. Check the panel, wiring, sensor types, and installation fit before choosing a retrofit. Konnected says its Home Assistant connection is local over the LAN, but it does not provide a standalone day-to-day app: everyday control depends on a supported smart-home platform. Its SmartThings integration uses Konnected Cloud, so do not assume the same local behavior across platforms. See Konnected’s explanation of how its system works.
Plan for the weak links, not just the sensors
- Internet loss: Prefer local integrations for core detection and automation; cloud-only devices may become unavailable.
- Power and network loss: Controller, router, hubs, cameras, and sirens may depend on power or local connectivity. Decide which components need backup rather than assuming a local protocol solves an outage.
- Remote access: Separate an alarm that works inside the home from access and notifications while away. Optional remote services may add convenience but are not required for every local automation.
- Recording and retention: Confirm where video is stored, how long it is retained, and whether the chosen features depend on an account or network connection.
- Monitoring: If emergency dispatch is essential, verify a separate professional monitoring service and its terms; a siren or phone alert alone does not establish dispatch.
A useful evaluation is to list each event you care about—door opened, motion detected, camera recording started—and trace what must be powered and connected for the system to detect it, act on it, and notify you. That makes dependencies visible before they become a surprise during an outage.
