The key handoff is that Spline’s MCP server is built into its macOS and Windows desktop app; the MCP connection does not work from the browser. Spline’s MCP documentation describes this desktop workflow.
What you’ll make—and what you need
Spline is a browser-based tool for building interactive 3D and 2D experiences. Its 3D editor includes tools for modeling, materials, lighting, animation, and physics. Spline’s site introduces the editor and its capabilities.

For a manageable first asset, make a simple object on a platform, give it a material, and add a light. This is a suggested beginner exercise, not a required template or a tested result. You’ll begin in the browser, then use the desktop app and an MCP-compatible client for the second stage.

Make a simple scene in the browser editor
- Open Spline’s browser editor. Create a new scene using the editor’s available start option.
- Add a platform. Use a basic shape as a small base for the object. Keep the geometry simple so the scene is easy to inspect.
- Add one object. Place a sphere or another basic shape above the platform. Adjust its size and position until it reads clearly as the focal point.
- Apply a material. Choose a color or surface appearance for the object, then make a contrasting choice for the platform.
- Add a light. Place a light so the object and its base are visible. Adjust the scene until their forms and materials are easy to distinguish.
- Save the scene. Leave it open in the editor; the next stage uses an open editor tab.
The point is to create a clear starting scene, not to finish every detail before trying MCP. Spline’s documented MCP workflow operates on live editor tabs, so the scene needs to be open in the desktop app when you connect.

Move from the browser to Spline’s desktop app
Download and open Spline’s desktop app for macOS or Windows. The MCP server is built into that app, and Spline says the MCP connection does not work from the browser. Its documentation does not require a separate Spline MCP package. See Spline’s MCP server setup instructions for the current connection procedure.
- Open the desktop app. Sign in or open your project as needed, then open the scene you made in the browser.
- Choose an MCP-compatible client. Follow the client-specific connection steps in Spline’s documentation to connect to the built-in server. Exact setup depends on the client; the documentation should be checked for its current requirements.
- Keep the scene open in an editor tab. Spline describes MCP editing as working with live editor tabs, rather than sending changes to a browser-only session.
- Request a focused change. Ask the client to create or edit a particular part of the open scene. Treat the response as a request to the editor, not a guarantee that the result will match your intent exactly.
Ask MCP for a specific edit, then inspect it
A useful first prompt describes one visual change and the details that matter. For example: “Add a rotating glass sphere on a pedestal with soft studio lighting.” This resembles the illustrative prompt in Spline’s MCP documentation; it is an example to adapt, not a promise of a particular output.

After the client submits the request, inspect the open scene in Spline’s editor. Check whether the object, material, animation, and lighting are present and whether they fit the scene. If a result is off, narrow the next request to one correction—for example, changing the sphere’s position or softening the light—then inspect again. The editor remains the place to review and refine the scene.
How Spline’s workflow differs from other browser and MCP options
These tools address different jobs, so “browser-based 3D” or “MCP support” alone does not make them interchangeable.

| Tool | Workflow environment | Creation model | What MCP does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spline | Browser scene creation, followed by MCP editing through the macOS or Windows desktop app | Designing 3D scenes and interactive experiences | Requests edits to a live scene in an open editor tab. Spline MCP documentation |
| Bitbybit | Browser-based editors; its CAD Cloud MCP operations require a user-supplied key | Parametric CAD models and configurators, using visual, block, and TypeScript editors | Its CAD MCP documents the API; its CAD Cloud MCP can run operations when supplied with a key. Bitbybit project site |
| PlayCanvas | Browser-based development environment | Building 3D applications with an asset pipeline and scripting | The cited project description focuses on application development; an MCP workflow is not established here. PlayCanvas project site |
| Pascal | Local-first editor available in a browser or CLI | Building 3D scenes with local project storage | Offers MCP connectivity; setup and storage are described in project documentation. Check the requirements for the current version. Pascal project repository |
For the specific sequence of designing in a browser and then requesting edits to that scene through MCP, Spline is the closest fit among these options. Consider Bitbybit for parametric CAD work, PlayCanvas for developing an interactive application, or Pascal if a local-first editor and CLI match your workflow better.
