Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo customize a Nuxt UI v4 theme, start with CSS design tokens, map those palette colors to semantic roles in app.config.ts, and set shared component defaults in the same AppConfig. Use <UTheme> for a subtree that needs different styling, and a component’s ui or class prop for a one-off exception. This layered approach keeps your app visually consistent without scattering unrelated overrides across templates.
How do I customize the theme in Nuxt UI v4?
Nuxt UI describes its theming as CSS-first: it builds on Tailwind CSS, uses semantic color roles, and supports runtime configuration through AppConfig. The practical division is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- CSS: define the palette and shared design tokens such as font choices, radius, and container width.
- AppConfig: connect semantic roles to palette colors and configure defaults shared by components.
- UTheme: scope component theme overrides or prop defaults to a subtree.
- Component props: make exceptions on a specific component.
Keep decisions at the broadest scope where they make sense. A brand color belongs in the palette; a purpose such as “primary action” belongs in semantic configuration; a special treatment for one dialog belongs near that dialog. Nuxt UI’s overview shows the CSS imports, custom palette, AppConfig colors, global CSS variables, shared component themes, and local props: Nuxt UI overview.

1. Establish the CSS entry point
In the stylesheet used by your Nuxt app, import Tailwind CSS and Nuxt UI before defining your project’s tokens. For example:
#1 Best Overall
@import "tailwindcss";
@import "@nuxt/ui";
@theme static {
--color-brand-50: #f5f8ff;
--color-brand-100: #e8efff;
--color-brand-200: #ccdcff;
--color-brand-300: #a3c1ff;
--color-brand-400: #75a0ff;
--color-brand-500: #4d7fff;
--color-brand-600: #315fe8;
--color-brand-700: #284bc2;
--color-brand-800: #263f9d;
--color-brand-900: #263a7d;
--color-brand-950: #19254d;
}
The example uses a Tailwind color scale named brand. Choose a consistent token name and use it wherever the palette is referenced; a CSS token, semantic mapping, and component styling that use different names will not form a reliable system. Replace these sample values with the scale your product actually uses.
2. Map semantic color roles in AppConfig
In the project-root app.config.ts, map Nuxt UI’s purpose-based color names to your palette. The following illustrates the documented configuration shape; adjust the role-to-palette assignments to suit your design:
export default defineAppConfig({
ui: {
colors: {
primary: 'brand',
secondary: 'violet',
success: 'green',
info: 'blue',
warning: 'amber',
error: 'red',
neutral: 'slate'
}
}
})
Use roles such as primary and error to express what a color means in the interface, rather than assigning a palette color separately to every component. Then a palette adjustment can remain centralized instead of requiring edits to every button, alert, or form control.

3. Set global CSS variables
Use the documented CSS variables for shared values that should apply beyond a single component. For instance, the Nuxt UI overview demonstrates --ui-radius for corner treatment and --ui-container for layout width. Define or override only the tokens your installed release documents; avoid treating a few examples as an exhaustive variable list.
A dark-mode selector can provide alternate token values when the app’s color-mode setup applies the corresponding dark class. The selector alone does not enable or configure color mode, so verify that your app actually switches the class before relying on its overrides.
How do I override Nuxt UI component styles globally?
Use the ui section of app.config.ts for component treatment that should be consistent throughout the application. Nuxt UI component themes can define slot classes, variants, compound variants, and default variants. A Button theme can, for example, set a base slot, adjust a slot for a particular size, and choose a default color variant.

Keep shared component choices in AppConfig instead of repeating equivalent classes in every template. This makes a global design change easier to audit and reduces the chance that two screens drift apart. Exact component theme keys and available slots can vary by component and release, so use the installed version’s documentation or types when building a more detailed override. Nuxt UI’s v4.11.2 release notes include theme-related fixes, including partial ui overrides on items and defaultVariants in FieldGroup themes: v4.11.2 release notes.

How do I scope a theme to part of my app?
Use UTheme for subtree styling
Wrap the part of the interface that needs a distinct treatment with UTheme and pass component slot overrides through its ui prop:
<UTheme :ui="{
button: {
slots: {
base: 'rounded-full'
}
}
}">
<UButton>Scoped button</UButton>
</UTheme>
The example illustrates the shape of a scoped override; choose slot names and classes that match the component theme you intend to change. In the v4.5.0 release notes, Nuxt UI says UTheme renders no HTML element and uses Vue provide/inject. Nested themes are supported, with the innermost theme winning; a component’s own ui prop takes priority over the provided theme. See the v4.5.0 UTheme notes.

Set scoped prop defaults when appropriate
UTheme can also provide defaults for descendant component props. For example, the v4.8.0 release notes document setting default button color, variant, or size, and input size. These are defaults rather than forced values: an explicit prop on a component takes precedence. This is useful when a subsection of a product has a distinct density or action style but should still allow an individual control to opt out. See the v4.8.0 UTheme prop-default notes.
When should I use a local component override?
Use the component’s ui prop when you need to change its internal slots, and class when you want to add classes to its root element. These local props are the right place for a genuinely one-off exception—for example, a single emphasized action or a root-level spacing adjustment. If the same override starts appearing repeatedly, promote it to AppConfig or a scoped UTheme rather than copying it across templates.

Which customization method should I choose?
| Need | Configuration surface | Scope and behavior | Maintenance consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Define palette, fonts, or shared design tokens | Stylesheet and Tailwind @theme |
Project-wide CSS design foundation | Centralizes visual primitives; keep token names consistent. |
| Assign meanings such as primary or error | app.config.ts under ui.colors |

Shared across the application | Reduces repeated template overrides; check component keys for the installed release. |
| Change defaults or theme for one subtree | <UTheme> |
Descendants of that wrapper; nested and explicit settings follow documented precedence | Contains a contextual variation without changing the whole application. |
| Make one exception | Component ui or class prop |
Individual component | Simple locally, but repeated exceptions can create drift. |
| Replace Nuxt UI’s built-in theme styling | ui.theme.unstyled in Nuxt configuration |
Build-time option | Requires you to restore structural as well as decorative styles. |
What does unstyled mode remove?
Set ui.theme.unstyled: true in Nuxt configuration only when you intend to supply a replacement styling system. Nuxt UI’s v4.9.0 notes warn that unstyled mode strips structural classes as well as visual theme classes. That can remove positioning, transitions, and flex or grid behavior, not just colors and borders. Components with substantial layout behavior—such as Modal, Drawer, or Calendar—may need those styles supplied again. Read the v4.9.0 unstyled-mode notes before enabling it.

What should teams moving to v4 update?
For projects upgrading from v3 or Nuxt UI Pro, the v4.0.0 release notes identify several configuration changes: use the @nuxt/ui package and register its module, change the AppConfig key from uiPro to ui, change the stylesheet import from @nuxt/ui-pro to @nuxt/ui, and update imports as needed. These are not a complete migration checklist; follow the official v4.0.0 release and migration notes for project-specific steps.
Nuxt UI’s release index as represented by its v4.11.2 release page lists v4.11.3, dated October 1, 2026, as newer than v4.11.2, dated September 22, 2026. Confirm the version installed in your project and check that version’s docs or types before copying advanced theme APIs: the precise behavior can change between releases. The release page is the available reference for the v4.11.2 notes and release index.
