Choose Playwright when screenshots belong inside your browser-test suite and you want local visual assertions alongside your code. Choose BrowserStack Screenshots when you need hosted captures of a URL on selected browser and operating-system configurations. If your team needs cloud-based visual comparisons and an approval workflow, consider BrowserStack Percy: it complements Playwright, but is a separate product from BrowserStack Screenshots.
How BrowserStack Screenshots and Playwright differ
These tools overlap in producing browser screenshots, but they solve different workflow problems. Playwright is a browser automation framework; its Page API captures images, and Playwright Test can compare captures against local reference images. BrowserStack Screenshots is a hosted URL-capture service where you choose browser and operating-system configurations. Neither role should be confused with Percy, BrowserStack’s cloud visual-testing workflow for comparing and approving baselines.

| Decision | Playwright | BrowserStack Screenshots | BrowserStack Percy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Browser automation, screenshot capture, and local visual assertions | Hosted screenshots of a URL across selected environments | Cloud visual comparison, builds, and baseline approval |
| Where capture and review happen | In the project’s test environment; references are local snapshot files | In BrowserStack’s hosted screenshot workflow | Captures are sent to Percy for cloud comparison and review |
| Environment selection | Browser projects and the environment running the tests influence output | Select OS, browser, version, resolution, and device in the capture workflow | Percy uses managed rendering; BrowserStack Automate supports explicit OS and browser selection |
| Baseline workflow | Project stores reference images; the team reviews changes and updates them deliberately | Image generation; the API itself is not a visual-approval workflow | Cloud builds with review and an explicit approve/promote-baseline step |
| Best fit | Automated tests with capture and local assertions in one suite | Hosted captures of a URL on chosen browsers and devices | Shared cloud review and managed visual baselines |

Capture a page to a file
With Playwright Test, navigate to the page and call page.screenshot(). For example, in a JavaScript test:

import { test } from '@playwright/test';
test('capture the page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
});
This writes an image from the page in the environment running the test. The Page API supports additional screenshot options; consult the Playwright Page screenshot API for the current option list.
Compare against a visual reference
For repeatable visual checks, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('page matches its visual reference', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
On the first run, Playwright creates the expected reference image; subsequent runs compare their capture with it. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match one another before comparing the resulting image with the expectation. The team owns the reference files, reviews changes, and decides when to update them. See Playwright’s visual comparison guide for configuration and update workflow.

Keep the rendering environment consistent
Differences in operating system, fonts, browser rendering, controls, or scrollbars can affect pixels. Playwright advises generating and checking baselines in a consistent environment. Keep baseline creation and CI comparisons aligned rather than treating every difference across machines as a product change. Dynamic content can also destabilize assertions; Playwright offers options such as animation control and custom styling to help make captures more repeatable.
Can BrowserStack capture the same URL across browsers?
Yes. BrowserStack Screenshots accepts a URL and configuration options that include operating system and version, browser and version, device and orientation, resolution, image quality, local testing, and wait time. It is useful when you want hosted captures on selected remote configurations without making a custom Playwright suite the center of the capture workflow. See the Screenshots API documentation for current request details.
The API requires an Automate plan that includes browsers. A Live-only subscription can use Screenshots through the webpage, but does not meet the API plan requirement described in BrowserStack’s documentation. BrowserStack Screenshots generates images; it should not be treated as a visual-baseline approval system. For cloud comparison and review, Percy is the distinct product to evaluate.

When Percy belongs in a Playwright workflow
Percy can take screenshots produced by existing Playwright toHaveScreenshot() tests and compare them in cloud builds. BrowserStack documents a drop-in integration using the Percy CLI and Playwright SDK, including importing the Percy integration in Playwright configuration. The workflow provides a shared review surface where reviewers inspect visual differences and approve a build to promote its baseline.
At the documentation check dated October 3, 2026, BrowserStack listed Node 18+, Playwright Test 1.60+, Percy CLI 1.32.6+, and Percy Playwright SDK 1.1.2+ as integration prerequisites. These minimum versions are volatile; confirm the current Percy Playwright integration documentation before installing or upgrading.
Percy uses managed rendering infrastructure, and its documentation says each browser capture counts as a separate screenshot against monthly usage. System fonts, controls, scrollbars, and other OS rendering details can affect visual differences. If the comparison specifically needs a selected operating system’s rendering, BrowserStack documents managing browsers with Automate rather than assuming Percy’s managed renderer represents that OS.

Choose by workflow, not by a speed or price claim
- Use Playwright if you already run browser tests and want screenshots and local visual assertions in the same suite, with references stored alongside the project.
- Use BrowserStack Screenshots if the primary task is to capture URLs on selected hosted browser and device configurations.
- Add Percy if the team needs cloud comparison, shared review, and managed baseline promotion; it can complement Playwright rather than replace the automation suite.
- Choose ScreenshotNeo first as a screenshot API alternative if you want a single API call for captures and clean shots: consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
Before committing, decide which browser/OS/device matrix matters, whether the team should own local or managed baselines, who approves visual changes, how consistent CI rendering must be, and whether screenshot volume affects a Percy plan. The official materials cited here do not establish a universal speed or total-cost winner; those depend on configuration, volume, and current plan terms.
