There is no verified, current list of five U.S. phone carriers consumers should avoid behind the headline “5 Phone Carriers To Avoid, According To Consumers.” A search result showed a similar headline attributed to Consumer Reports, but the available information did not establish the five names, the report, its date, or its method. Naming carriers without that evidence would be misleading. What consumers can do is check for five recurring kinds of risk before choosing or keeping a provider.
Why there is no reliable five-carrier ranking here
A carrier ranking needs more than a headline or a collection of complaints. To identify the worst providers, readers would need a dated, methodologically clear comparison—ideally accounting for subscriber numbers, service areas, and the kinds of problems measured. The available information does not establish such a comparison or name five carriers. Complaints can flag issues worth investigating, but they do not, by themselves, show that one provider performs worse than another.

The historical U.S. evidence illustrates why dates and methods matter. In a 2010 report, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) said 84% of surveyed adult wireless users were very or somewhat satisfied overall, while 10% were very or somewhat dissatisfied. The survey was fielded from February 23 to April 5, 2009, and respondents reported on service in 2008. These are historical national estimates, not current carrier ratings.
Five carrier problems to check before you sign up
These are risk categories to investigate, not accusations against five named companies. Check current terms and local performance for each provider you are considering.

1. Coverage gaps where you actually use your phone
A provider’s broad coverage claims do not tell you whether service will work reliably at your home, workplace, commute, or regular travel destinations. Check the provider’s current coverage information for those specific places. If possible, ask people who use the network nearby or try service before moving your primary number. Remember that a map is not a guarantee of indoor reception or performance at a particular location.
2. A bill that differs from the advertised price
Compare the total recurring bill, not just the headline plan price. Ask which taxes, fees, device payments, add-ons, or discounts affect the amount due, and when any promotional rate ends. Also check one-time charges, such as activation or equipment costs, before agreeing. Get the terms in writing so you can compare the expected bill with the first statements.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
3. Plan restrictions or contract terms you did not expect
Read the plan details for data limits, speed reductions, hotspot allowances, roaming, device financing, and any conditions attached to a discount. Check whether service or device obligations remain if you cancel, and whether the plan changes after a promotional period. A low monthly price may be a poor fit if its restrictions conflict with how you use your phone.

4. Support that is hard to reach or does not resolve the issue
Before choosing a carrier, find its current support channels and hours, and check how it handles billing disputes, outages, and account problems. Save order confirmations, plan terms, bills, and support case numbers. If an issue arises, record dates and the steps already taken; a concise paper trail makes it easier to explain what remains unresolved.

5. A difficult cancellation or number transfer
Before switching, find out how to cancel service, whether device balances or other obligations remain, and what information is required to transfer your number. Confirm the new provider’s activation process and timing before ending the old service. Number transfers and cancellation rules can depend on current provider terms, so verify them directly rather than relying on assumptions.
What complaint data can—and cannot—tell you
GAO analyzed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wireless complaints from 2004 through 2008. Its report listed 54,985 complaints about billing and rates, 14,290 about call quality, 13,311 about customer service, and 11,737 about contract early termination. Those are complaint counts for an old period; the figures are not adjusted here for subscriber totals or provider market share. They describe issues reported to the FCC, not a current league table of carriers.

More recent complaint figures in the available sources concern Canada, not the U.S. The Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS) accepted 23,647 complaints between August 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025. Its 2026 annual-report summary said billing-related issues rose 16% during that period and wireless services accounted for more than half of issues raised in complaints. These are Canadian, multi-service figures and do not identify U.S. carriers to avoid.
Complaint totals need context: the reporting period, geography, services covered, number of customers, and collection method all affect what a count means. A rise in complaints can signal a trend to investigate, but it does not establish that a particular carrier is worse without comparable provider-level data.

How to compare providers for your own needs
- Map your regular locations. Check current coverage at home, work, along your commute, and wherever you travel often. Consider whether you need reliable indoor service, hotspot access, or roaming.
- Calculate the expected bill. Add recurring plan charges, applicable fees, device payments, and any one-time costs. Note when discounts expire and what the bill is expected to become afterward.
- Match plan terms to your use. Review data and hotspot limits, speed policies, roaming, device obligations, and any contract or cancellation conditions.
- Check support and escalation options. Identify how to contact the provider and how to keep a record of unresolved billing or service issues.
- Verify the switching process. Ask the prospective provider how number transfer works and check what you must settle or complete with your current provider before cancellation.
For complaints about unwanted calls or texts, the FCC’s unwanted calls and texts guidance explains that complaints can inform policy and potential enforcement; the FCC does not resolve individual unwanted-call or text complaints. That page is specific to unwanted communications, not a general route for resolving billing or service disputes.
