BrowserStack Screenshots vs. Percy: Which Fits Visual Regression Testing?

BrowserStack Screenshots is for quick cross-browser inspection; Percy adds visual baselines, diffs, and review. Choose based on the workflow your team needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Percy if you need repeatable visual regression testing: it compares screenshots from test runs with approved baselines and gives teams a workflow to review and approve visual changes. Choose BrowserStack Screenshots for quick screenshot checks across browsers when that baseline-and-review process is not the requirement. These products have different primary jobs, so the right choice depends on whether you need to inspect a page once or track visual changes across builds.

What is the difference between BrowserStack Screenshots and Percy?

BrowserStack Screenshots is presented as a way to take and inspect screenshots across browsers. Its product description emphasizes quick screenshot testing and advertises access to 3,000+ real browsers; that figure is BrowserStack’s marketing claim, not an independently audited count.

Percy is a visual testing workflow. It captures pages or components during tests, compares new renders with previously approved snapshots, and lets reviewers inspect changes, request revisions, or approve them. Percy can connect builds with pull requests and commit metadata, and approvals can update source-control status. BrowserStack’s Screenshots product description does not establish that it provides Percy-style baseline management, CI review, or approval, so do not assume those capabilities are included.

Which should you choose?

Your need Better fit Why
Quickly inspect how a page renders in different browsers BrowserStack Screenshots Its documented focus is quick screenshot checks across browsers.
Catch unintended visual changes between builds and review them as a team Percy on Web It compares new captures with approved baselines and supports review and approval.
Run visual checks against specifically chosen operating systems, browsers, or devices Percy on Automate It captures screenshots in configured BrowserStack Automate sessions; both Percy and Automate licenses are required.

Visual checks complement functional tests; they do not establish that an application behaves correctly. BrowserStack’s Percy guidance recommends treating visual testing as a complement to functional assertions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How Percy’s visual regression workflow works

  1. Capture pages or components during a test run. Integrate Percy with a supported SDK or framework and capture the views whose appearance matters to your application.
  2. Compare against approved snapshots. Percy checks each new rendering against the prior approved baseline and surfaces visual differences for review.
  3. Review and resolve changes. Reviewers can inspect a difference, request changes, or approve it. Builds can be associated with pull requests and commit metadata, with approval reflected in source-control status.
  4. Maintain the baseline deliberately. Approve intentional design changes so later builds compare against the intended appearance, rather than treating every difference as a defect.

For setup, consult BrowserStack’s current Percy documentation for the SDK or framework you use and the project type that matches your test environment. The available sources do not establish one universal setup command or framework-specific configuration that applies to every project.

Percy on Web or Percy on Automate?

Percy on Web

Percy on Web is the standalone visual testing workflow, using a selection of current browsers. It captures DOM snapshots and page assets, then reconstructs and renders them on Percy infrastructure. Its documented limitation is that it cannot capture authenticated assets. If a page depends on a logged-in session or protected resources, confirm that this project type can represent the pages you need before adopting it.

It supports explicitly configured desktop OS, mobile OS, device, and browser combinations, but requires both Percy and Automate licenses.

The project types also differ in pseudo-class support and test-platform support. Check the current SDK and framework documentation for your application rather than assuming the two modes behave identically.

Plan screenshot usage before choosing Percy

Percy usage is counted by browser-and-responsive-width renderings, not simply by logical pages or test cases. BrowserStack’s billing documentation defines a screenshot as “A screenshot is a rendering of a page or component in an individual browser and responsive width combination.” A page rendered in two browsers at three widths therefore counts as 6 screenshots; two pages rendered across those same combinations count as 12, even if the interface groups the results into two snapshots.

BrowserStack’s undated Percy plans and billing documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 5,000 screenshots per month on the free plan and says it includes unlimited users and projects. The same documentation says paid usage above a plan allocation can incur overage charges. Pricing, allowances, and overage terms can change, so check the live billing terms before budgeting or purchasing.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

If you need a screenshot API rather than a visual-regression review workflow, try ScreenshotNeo first. It returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request and can remove cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. It is not a substitute for Percy’s approved baselines, visual diffs, and review states; use it when you need clean captures for your own application or process.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page:
