A CAPTCHA, bot-check page, blank image, 403 response, or missing page content can mean the target site is challenging or blocking Browserless automation. First inspect the captured page and confirm the request reached the expected URL. If the workflow is permitted, Browserless documents options including its /unblock API, stealth route, CAPTCHA-solving tools, and residential proxies—but none guarantees access or grants permission to automate a site.
What a CAPTCHA in a screenshot means
The screenshot shows what the browser received; it does not by itself explain why the site challenged that session. Browserless lists CAPTCHA pages, blank images, 403 or access-denied responses, and missing content as signs that a site may be blocking automation. Browserless’s Screenshot API guidance describes these symptoms, but they do not identify the target’s specific detection mechanism.

Compare the capture with the page in a normal browser session you are allowed to use. Check the requested URL, navigation result, and visible page state. This can help distinguish a challenge from a navigation or rendering problem, but it cannot prove why the challenge appeared.

Start with the stealth route
Browserless recommends trying its stealth route for bot-detection issues. Stealth changes browser behavior and can affect scripts that depend on stock Chrome internals, so validate the workflow after switching.
Use CAPTCHA detection and solving where appropriate
Browserless documents adding solveCaptchas=true to a connection URL and provides CAPTCHA-solving features for browser sessions and BrowserQL. Allow a longer timeout when a solve takes more than ordinary page navigation: Browserless notes that solving can take seconds to minutes. If you rely on CAPTCHA events, register listeners before navigation; detection may happen during page.goto(), so listeners added afterward can miss it. Consider a residential proxy only if the block appears IP-related
Browserless documents residential proxy configuration and suggests matching the proxy country to the site’s expected audience. Residential proxy traffic is billed by bandwidth, so account for that usage. A proxy or stealth setting does not ensure access; do not use either to bypass a target’s access controls or terms.
Verify the result before relying on the screenshot
Do not treat a solver’s response as proof that the intended page loaded. Check the returned fields for whether a CAPTCHA was found and solved, then verify that the destination content is actually present before using the capture. Browserless notes that a reCAPTCHA checkbox may not appear ticked after solving; its example proceeds by submitting the form. Consult its CAPTCHA-solving guidance for session-specific details.

Common symptoms and fixes
- The screenshot is a CAPTCHA or bot-check page: Confirm the URL and page state. For a permitted workflow, choose a screenshot-focused
/unblockrequest or session-based CAPTCHA handling depending on whether you need only an image or further browser actions. - The screenshot is blank or white: Check navigation and wait settings, then determine whether the browser reached a challenge or failed to load the page. A blank capture is a diagnostic clue, not an explanation on its own.
- The response is 403 or access denied: Treat it as an access restriction. Confirm the request and permissions; do not assume a proxy or CAPTCHA solver is authorization.
- Some elements are missing: Verify the page state and wait conditions before changing detection settings. The site may be serving different content to the automation session.
- The solve takes too long or an event is missing: Allow a longer timeout and attach event listeners before navigation, since detection can occur during the page load.
- The checkbox still looks unchecked: Check whether the workflow needs to submit the form and confirm the resulting page rather than relying on the checkbox appearance alone.
- Stealth breaks an existing script: Re-test browser-dependent code after changing routes; stealth can alter behavior relied on by automation.
- Challenges persist through an IP-based block: If permitted and relevant, evaluate a residential proxy, its geographic match, and its bandwidth cost.

Browserless’s technical documentation describes ways to handle challenges; it does not establish whether a particular target permits your automation. If the site’s terms or access controls prohibit the workflow, stop rather than treating stealth, CAPTCHA solving, or proxy configuration as permission.
