Here is how to count words in a browser—and what “client-side” does and does not tell you about privacy.
How do I count words in my browser?
Start by choosing a counting rule. A whitespace split counts chunks separated by spaces; locale-aware word segmentation identifies word-like units according to language-specific boundaries. Those methods can produce different results, especially for text written without spaces between words.

For multilingual text, JavaScript’s Intl.Segmenter accepts a locale and a granularity. With word granularity, count the segments marked as word-like rather than simply counting every segment or splitting on spaces. The API also supports sentence and grapheme segmentation. See MDN’s Intl.Segmenter reference.
That distinction matters for a Japanese sentence: splitting on spaces can leave the sample as one unsplit string, while a Japanese-locale segmenter can identify multiple word-like units. A universal space-based rule is therefore not a reliable multilingual definition of “word.” Locale-aware segmentation is more appropriate, but it does not guarantee that every product or locale will return an identical count.

How should a counter handle characters and sentences?
“Character count” also needs a definition. JavaScript string length counts UTF-16 code units, which are not always the same as user-perceived characters. A visible character can consist of multiple code units, or of multiple Unicode code points joined into one grapheme cluster. If the goal is to count what a person sees as a character, grapheme segmentation is a better fit than raw string length.
Sentence counts have their own boundary rules. Intl.Segmenter can segment sentences as well as words and graphemes; a counter should state which rule it uses rather than presenting its result as universal. For any metric, a short example beside the count can make the tool’s convention understandable.

Does this word counter upload my text?
“Client-side” means computation happens in the browser when the implementation supports that description. It does not, by itself, establish that a page never sends text or other information over the network. Browser APIs explain what a page can do, not what a particular deployed page actually does.
To make a specific “your text never leaves your device” claim, the tool’s deployed code and network behavior—including relevant integrations—need to be checked. The fact that text is processed in JavaScript is not sufficient proof. If text is only held in memory, that is different from saving it in browser storage; storage choice should be disclosed separately from whether the page transmits input.

What happens if a counter saves text?
The two common Web Storage options have different lifetimes. sessionStorage is scoped to an origin and tab, and is cleared when that tab closes. localStorage is scoped to an origin and persists across browser restarts. Both APIs are synchronous. Browser privacy modes and policies can affect persistence, so neither description promises permanent retention. MDN explains these behaviors in its Web Storage API guide.
The broader Storage API can estimate site storage use and request persistence against browser eviction. It is available in secure contexts and workers, but storage management is separate from whether text analysis runs locally. See MDN’s Storage API reference.

Does Intl.Segmenter work in older browsers?
MDN marks Intl.Segmenter Baseline 2024 and cautions that older browser versions may not support it. A counter should check for availability and describe its fallback if it has one. A basic whitespace split or regular expression can provide a limited alternative, but it should not be described as equivalent to locale-aware segmentation. Browser support should be tested on the versions the tool intends to support; the API’s general compatibility label does not establish which versions a particular tool has tested.

When should text analysis move to a Web Worker?
A Web Worker can run computation away from the page’s main thread, which may help keep an interface responsive when inputs or analysis are substantial. For a small counter, moving the work to a worker may add needless complexity; whether it helps depends on the actual workload.

Workers communicate through messages. Ordinary message data is copied or serialized rather than shared as the same object, so sending large text or results has a cost. Measure the real task before adding a worker, and describe performance only with the input, device, browser and method used for the measurement. MDN covers worker communication in Using Web Workers.
Quick Recap
What I learned about building a browser word counter
- Define “word,” “character” and “sentence” before displaying counts; each is a product decision.
- Use locale-aware segmentation when multilingual word boundaries matter, and explain any fallback’s limitations.
- Treat local computation, browser storage and network transmission as separate questions.
- Add a worker only when the workload warrants moving computation off the main thread.
