Hardware wallets generally offer better protection against online theft because they keep private keys offline when signing. Browser wallets are more convenient for connecting to web apps, but their use depends on an internet-connected browser and computer. Neither option prevents every kind of loss: a stolen recovery phrase, phishing, or approval of a malicious transaction can put either wallet at risk. “Safer” depends on which threats you need to reduce.
What is the security difference?
A browser wallet is software used through a browser extension. Its keys are handled in a browser-based workflow, so the computer and browser are part of the security picture. Ethereum.org warns that browser extensions can pose risks, including the possibility that an extension that was safe can later update with malicious code. A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep private keys offline for signing. Ethereum.org describes the purpose this way: “A hardware wallet provides offline storage for private keys.” That reduces the chance that malware on an internet-connected computer can access the keys, but it does not make every action or part of the setup safe.
The official guidance cited here does not provide a directly comparable safety rate or loss statistic for the two wallet types. The useful distinction is the specific risk reduced: a hardware signer limits online exposure of private keys, while users of either type remain responsible for their recovery method and the transactions they approve.

How the two options compare
| Factor | Browser wallet | Hardware wallet | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private-key exposure | Keys are handled by wallet software in a browser-based workflow, which depends on the browser and computer. | Keys are kept offline on the device for signing. | A hardware signer reduces online key exposure; it does not eliminate other attack paths. |
| Access and dapps | Direct access in the browser suits frequent web-app interactions. | Signing requires a physical-device step and a compatible setup. | Some setups pair a hardware signer with a browser interface. Coinbase documents using a Ledger device with its browser extension in its Coinbase Wallet extension setup guide. |
| Recovery | Self-custody depends on protecting the recovery phrase or other access method. | The recovery phrase is still needed if the device is lost or damaged. | The device does not replace a secure recovery backup. |
| Phishing and signing | A fake site or malicious request may trick you into exposing secrets or approving an action. | A device cannot make a deceptive request safe; you still need to review what you approve. | Careful verification matters whichever wallet you use. |
| Compatibility | Browser, extension, network, and application support vary. | Supported assets and integrations vary by device and software. | Check the networks, tokens, and dapps you need before choosing. |
Risks that neither wallet type removes
Recovery-phrase theft
Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase may be able to access the wallet. Keep it offline, do not share it, and never enter it into a site or message because someone claims it is needed for support. MetaMask’s guidance on securing a Secret Recovery Phrase and password recommends offline storage. Investor.gov also explains the responsibilities involved in self-custody in its crypto-asset custody basics for retail investors.
Phishing and deceptive requests
A convincing fake website can solicit credentials or lead you to approve a harmful action. A hardware wallet changes how a transaction is signed; it does not establish that the site, request, or transaction is trustworthy. Navigate to services through addresses you have verified, and be cautious of unsolicited messages and urgent requests.

Approving a malicious transaction
Self-custody wallets rely on the user to authorize transactions. Before signing, check that you initiated the action and understand the details presented by the wallet and device. If the request is unexpected or unclear, do not approve it. Offline keys cannot undo an approval you choose to make.
Which wallet should you choose?
A browser wallet may fit frequent web-app use
Choose a browser wallet when direct access to compatible dapps is important and you are prepared to protect the browser, computer, and recovery method. Use the wallet’s official distribution channel, keep the browser and extension current, and treat unexpected signing prompts as suspicious.

Consider a hardware wallet when online key exposure is a priority
A hardware wallet is worth considering if reducing the exposure of keys to an internet-connected computer matters more than the extra physical signing step. MetaMask’s support guidance says, “If your wallet has a high value of assets, consider getting a hardware wallet.” That is a conditional recommendation, not a guarantee against loss.
Use both when the integration supports it
These categories are not always alternatives. A browser interface can connect to a hardware signer, combining browser-based dapp access with offline key storage for signing. Confirm that the wallet software, device, assets, and network you intend to use are supported together.

What to check before choosing
- Supported assets and networks: Confirm the wallet and any hardware integration support the tokens and networks you actually use.
- Dapp compatibility: Check that the apps you need work with the wallet or supported connection method.
- Recovery: Understand how wallet access is restored, and make a secure offline backup of the recovery phrase where applicable.
- Transaction review: Make sure you can inspect signing requests and know how to reject ones you do not understand.
- Updates and distribution: Obtain software from official sources and keep it current; browser extensions can change after installation.
- Your threat model: Decide whether your priority is convenience, reducing online key exposure, or both—and account for phishing and backup security either way.
Ethereum.org’s wallet-selection guidance identifies criteria such as security, self-custody, Ethereum support, dapp connections, and hardware-wallet support. Use those criteria to evaluate the specific setup you plan to use rather than assuming every wallet in a category behaves identically.
