Browser Using Too Much RAM? How to Find the Cause and Reduce Memory Use

A high browser memory total needs diagnosis, not guesswork. Find the demanding task, reduce unnecessary work, and use inactive-tab controls carefully.

A browser using a large amount of RAM is a signal to find the demanding tab, background task, extension, or system bottleneck—not proof that one setting is responsible. Start with the browser’s task manager, trim work you do not need, then test built-in controls for inactive tabs and page preloading. The “15GB” in the headline is a reported experience, not a verified measurement: the browser, computer, conditions, and changes behind it are not established.

Why can a browser use so much memory?

Modern pages can contain interactive apps, media, and background activity, and each open tab adds work. Extensions and other running apps can also contribute. A high total therefore does not identify its own cause. Google’s troubleshooting guidance for managed Chrome on Windows lists insufficient system memory, web apps, and graphics or driver issues among possible contributors; that scope is not a benchmark for every computer. Google’s Chrome performance troubleshooting guide explains those possibilities.

Before changing browser settings, check whether memory pressure is limited to one tab or reflects the whole computer. A browser’s reported usage can fluctuate with what pages are doing, so compare after a change under similar conditions rather than treating a single reading as a definitive diagnosis.

How do I find which Chrome tab is using the most memory?

  1. In desktop Chrome, open More tools > Task Manager.
  2. Select the Memory column to sort tasks by memory use.
  3. Inspect tabs, background pages, and other listed tasks. If a page or task is unexpectedly high, investigate that site or activity before ending it.
  4. End a task only if you can afford to lose any unsaved work in it. Google warns that ending a task can discard unsaved state.

Google’s Chrome speed-up guidance also recommends closing unused tabs, turning off or removing unwanted extensions, and avoiding multiple apps running at once. Make one change at a time and check whether it helps; that makes it easier to identify what mattered.

How can I reduce Chrome memory usage?

Close work you are not using

Close tabs you no longer need and quit apps that are not part of your current task. Google notes that more open tabs make Chrome work harder. If a particular page repeatedly consumes substantial memory, reload it or stop using it while you investigate whether its content or activity is responsible.

Review extensions

Extensions can add work to the browser, but a high total alone does not prove an extension is at fault. Disable or remove extensions you do not use, then compare memory use and browser behavior. If you suspect one extension, test with it disabled rather than removing several at once.

Use Memory Saver for inactive tabs

On desktop Chrome, open Settings > Performance and find Memory Saver. Google documents three levels: Moderate, Balanced (recommended), and Maximum. The feature deactivates inactive tabs; when you return to one, it reloads. More aggressive deactivation can reduce background work but may interrupt a workflow that depends on a tab staying live.

Use Always keep these sites active for sites that need to remain active. Google says tabs may be kept active when they are playing audio or video, handling calls or screen sharing, showing notifications, downloading files, containing partially filled forms, pinned, or connected to a device. Those exceptions help explain why Memory Saver does not deactivate every inactive-looking tab.

Check memory shown for individual tabs

Chrome can show tab memory use in its hover card. Google’s performance instructions describe enabling this in Settings > Appearance; the exact wording varies by platform, with instructions for Windows, Linux, Chromebook, and Mac. See Google’s Chrome performance settings guide. These performance settings cannot be personalized in Chrome on iOS or Android.

Should I change Chrome’s page preloading?

Chrome preloads pages to make browsing and searching faster. In desktop Chrome, review Settings > Performance > Preload pages. If memory pressure matters more than the speed benefit, try a less aggressive preloading choice or turn it off, then compare your usual browsing. Google describes the control but does not quantify how much RAM changing it saves, so treat it as a test—not a guaranteed fix.

Does Chrome Memory Saver close tabs?

It deactivates inactive tabs rather than permanently closing them. A tab reloads when you return to it, so unsaved or live activity may not behave as it would in an active tab. Keep sites active when that reload or interruption would disrupt your work.

Would Microsoft Edge’s controls help?

Edge offers sleeping tabs and RAM resource controls. Microsoft introduced resource controls in Edge Beta 125 and described them in a May 2, 2024 post. In Edge, the documented path is Settings > System and performance. Microsoft says the default configuration controls RAM only while PC gaming; choosing Always applies the control outside gaming as well. A limit can cause more tabs to sleep or be discarded, leading to reloads, and a limit set too low can slow the browser. Usage may sometimes exceed the selected limit because the control cannot always guarantee it stays below that amount. Details: Microsoft Edge’s resource-controls announcement.

Sleeping and discarding are not identical. In a December 6, 2022 post, Microsoft’s Edge team reported that sleeping a tab saves “83% of its memory on average.” That is a vendor-reported average, not an independent test or a promise for a particular tab or computer. The same post says Edge 105 began automatically sleeping high-resource tabs as device memory neared its limit; it also distinguishes sleeping tabs, which resume without a full reload, from discarded tabs, which require one. Microsoft’s explanation of sleeping tabs provides the context for its figure.

Should I upgrade my computer’s RAM?

Consider a hardware upgrade only if diagnostics point to a system-wide memory shortage—not simply because a browser’s total looks large. First check the browser’s tasks, reduce unnecessary tabs and extensions, and see whether other apps are also competing for memory. Google identifies insufficient system memory as one possible cause of slow Chrome performance, but the headline’s reported 15GB does not establish that the computer lacked adequate installed RAM. Any upgrade also depends on the computer’s model and memory compatibility.
