Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIn my test of 30 phrases, 30% were judged wrong in meaning. That is a result from one small test—not a browser-wide accuracy rate. The language pair, phrases, scoring method, browser versions, and engine change are not specified here, so the result cannot show which browser translates web pages best. It does show why a translation that reads smoothly still needs a meaning check.
What the 30% result does—and does not—tell you
The reported result means that 9 of the 30 phrases were judged wrong in meaning in that test. It does not establish that any browser gets 30% of translations wrong in general: the outcome could change with the language pair, phrase selection, page context, evaluator, and definition of a meaning error. The test details and the engine switched to are not established, so the comparison cannot be independently reproduced from the result alone.

Translation quality is also sensitive to how it is judged. A 2021 study by Markus Freitag and coauthors evaluated machine translation with professional translators, document context, and an MQM error-analysis framework. Its system rankings differed substantially from rankings based on crowd-worker judgments. As the authors put it, “Human evaluation of modern high-quality machine translation systems is a difficult problem, and there is increasing evidence that inadequate evaluation procedures can lead to erroneous conclusions.” Read the study.

That does not prove or disprove the 30-phrase result. It is a reason to treat it as a prompt for careful comparison, not a definitive ranking.

How to compare browser translations fairly
If you want to decide which available browser translation works better for your reading, keep the input and judgment consistent. Compare the same source text, source and target languages, and page context. A different paragraph or language pair can produce a different result.
- Use the same text in each browser. Include complete sentences and surrounding context, not isolated snippets when context affects meaning.
- Check meaning separately from style. A sentence can sound natural while changing who did what, the degree of certainty, or the point being made.
- Look for high-impact errors. Check negation, quantities, dates, names, idioms, ambiguous terms, and instructions. A small error in one of these can matter more than awkward wording.
- Record the language pair and result. Note the browser and version, operating system, source and target languages, whether the page was translated, and any setting or exception that affected it.
- Use a qualified bilingual reviewer for consequential text. If a translation will guide a medical, legal, financial, or safety decision, do not treat an unverified browser output as authoritative.
For a formal evaluation, define the error categories before scoring and have qualified evaluators judge the output against the source in context. A single person’s phrase-level check can be useful for choosing a tool for personal reading, but it is not a substitute for a controlled, reproducible comparison.
Why browser translation can differ
Language pair and model availability
Translation quality can vary by source and target language. Firefox’s technical documentation says it may translate through English when a direct language-pair model is unavailable. A result for one pair therefore should not be assumed to describe another. Firefox translation technical documentation.

Where translation is processed
Mozilla says Firefox webpage translation happens on the device, with language files downloaded as needed; users can also preinstall full language files. Mozilla contrasts this with Chrome and Edge cloud translation, where text is sent to Google or Microsoft servers. This is a description of processing location in Mozilla’s support documentation, not a claim that Firefox is more accurate or that every translation feature in every browser version has the same data flow. Mozilla’s Firefox translation support page.
Microsoft separately documents an Edge Translator API for developers. Its task-specific model is downloaded for a language pair on first use and can operate on-device afterward. Microsoft warns that these models can produce translations that are “unfair, unreliable, or offensive.” That API documentation is not a head-to-head accuracy test of browser webpage translation. A page that does not translate, or translates only after a prompt, may reflect browser settings or page detection rather than the quality of the translation model. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the preferred-language list, “Never translate” exceptions, whether the issue is limited to one page or profile, page language markup, extensions, policy, and network or proxy access. - In Edge, open
edge://settings/languagesand review the preferred languages and translation settings. - Check whether the site or language is listed under “Never translate” exceptions.
- Try another page and, if appropriate, another browser profile to see whether the problem is page-specific or profile-specific.
- If translation is missing on a particular site, consider whether the page declares its language correctly; extensions or organizational policy can also affect the offer.
- If the browser cannot fetch translation resources, check whether a network or proxy is blocking access.
Firefox’s translation icon depends on Firefox identifying a page as translatable with the available models; its documentation describes CLD2 for language identification. A missing prompt is therefore not itself evidence that the displayed translation was inaccurate. Firefox translation technical documentation.
What can be concluded from the test
The defensible conclusion is narrow: in one test of 30 phrases, 9 were judged wrong in meaning, and the tester subsequently changed engines. Without the language pair, phrase set, scoring rubric, evaluators, browser versions, and before-and-after outputs, that finding does not identify the most accurate browser or establish that changing engines improved accuracy. For ordinary browsing, compare the engines on the languages and material you actually read; for important decisions, verify the translation with a qualified person.
