Every feature that writes to localStorage on a site writes to the same key space, so keys that seemed safe in one module collide or orphan data as the team grows. A namespace helps people organize that shared space. It does not change the browser’s quota, the synchronous execution model, or the browser’s right to remove data. This article separates the problems a namespacing layer can address from the ones it cannot, so you can decide whether a wrapper is enough or whether your data needs a different storage design.
Why a team hits the problem
Web Storage is scoped to the origin. Documents with the same origin access the same localStorage area, and an origin is defined by scheme, host, and port. Paths do not create separate areas. A billing page, an admin page, and a settings modal served from https://app.example.com all read and write one store. A different subdomain or port is a different origin with its own store. (MDN Web Docs, “Web Storage API”)

That shared boundary is the core of the team problem. Nothing in the browser tells you which module owns cart or prefs. Two features can pick the same name, one can leave data behind after it is removed, and no one can easily list what the application stores. The browser is not failing here; it is simply not designed to track ownership for your codebase.

A consistent prefix or wrapper addresses the organizational side of the problem:
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- Collisions between features. Each module writes under its own prefix, so two teams cannot silently overwrite each other’s
themekey. - Ownership. Keys carry the module that wrote them, which makes code review and debugging faster.
- Scoped cleanup. A module can remove its own data by scanning keys with its prefix, instead of clearing the whole origin area.
The pattern is simple enough to write yourself. This sketch is a generic illustration of the idea, not the API of the namespaced-storage project:
function createNamespace(prefix) {
const full = (key) => `${prefix}:${key}`;
return {
get(key) {
return localStorage.getItem(full(key));
},
set(key, value) {
try {
localStorage.setItem(full(key), value);
return true;
} catch (err) {
if (err.name === "QuotaExceededError") return false;
throw err;
}
},
remove(key) {
localStorage.removeItem(full(key));
},
clear() {
const keys = [];
for (let i = 0; i < localStorage.length; i++) {
const k = localStorage.key(i);
if (k.startsWith(prefix + ":")) keys.push(k);
}
keys.forEach((k) => localStorage.removeItem(k));
},
};
}
const cartStore = createNamespace("checkout");
cartStore.set("items", JSON.stringify([{ sku: "A-100", qty: 2 }]));
Note that set returns false on quota failure rather than throwing, which the caller must handle. A wrapper that hides the error is worse than no wrapper.

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
What a namespace cannot change
Namespacing changes key names. It leaves the storage semantics alone. The limits below apply regardless of how keys are named.
| Constraint | What the documentation says | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Execution model | Web Storage calls block JavaScript execution while they run. | MDN, “Web Storage API.” A prefix does not change this. |
| Data type | Values are stored as strings. | Objects must be serialized, for example with JSON.stringify. |
| Web Storage quota | 5 MiB each for localStorage and sessionStorage per origin. |
MDN’s current guidance, “Storage quotas and eviction criteria.” Browser-specific rules may change. |
| Safari browser apps | Origin quota up to 60% of total disk; overall quota up to 80%. | WebKit, August 10, 2023. Applies from Safari 17.0 and the corresponding iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma releases. These are upper bounds, not guaranteed capacity. |
| Other WebKit apps | Origin quota up to 15% of total disk; overall quota up to 20%. | Same WebKit post and release scope. Upper bounds only. |
The quota figures matter most for planning. The 5 MiB Web Storage limit is the number to design against for page code, while the WebKit percentages describe what certain Apple-platform apps may be granted, which varies with disk size and app type.

Handling quota errors and eviction
Writes can fail. MDN advises wrapping writes in try...catch because quota errors can occur, and the error surfaces as QuotaExceededError. A safe write path should:
- Catch the error and check its name, so unrelated exceptions are not swallowed.
- Decide whether the data is disposable (a cache, a UI preference) or user-critical (drafts, unsent form input).
- For disposable data, fall back to memory or skip caching. For critical data, show the user a clear message and offer an export or a server save.
navigator.storage.estimate() reports estimated usage and quota for the origin. It is useful for diagnostics and for deciding whether to warn users before large writes. It is an estimate, not a reservation of future space. (MDN Web Docs, “Storage quotas and eviction criteria”; MDN Web Docs, “Storage API”)
Rank #4

Browser storage can also be cleared under storage pressure or by browser policy, and quotas and eviction rules differ between browsers and storage systems. Treat anything stored only in the browser as recoverable unless you have a copy elsewhere. The Storage API exposes persistence requests where the browser supports them, but a granted request is still not a guarantee.
Choosing the right storage for the data
Namespacing is the right tool only when the data is small, key-value, and fine to read synchronously. For other shapes, pick a different API:
Best Value
- USB-C STORAGE ON THE GO: This sleek drive is supported by Samsung NAND flash and is incredibly compact to fit in the palm of your hand; Count on reliable performance and fast transfer speeds while staying compact
- PERFORMANCE WITH SPEED: No need to choose between performance and reliability; Experience a fast, powerful flash drive that transfers 4GB files in just 11 seconds with up to 400MB/s USB 3.2 Gen 1 read speeds and is backward compatible with USB 3.0/2.0
- MODERN MEETS ICONIC: The ultra-sleek USB-C drive looks as good as it performs; Featuring a reversible plug, the Type-C inserts into your devices seamlessly every time; Transfer large files with style and ease
- ALWAYS CONNECTED: USB-C is compatible across devices, including laptops, tablets, phones and cameras, with enough space for 63,730 photos or maximum 12 hours of 4K video; With up to 256GB of storage space, this pocket-sized thumb drive comes in handy wherever you go
- TOUGH & TRUSTED: Files stay secure, no matter the terrain; Samsung's flash memory technology makes the Type-C a trustworthy drive to store your valuable data; It's waterproof, shock-proof, magnet-proof, temperature-proof, and X-ray-proof body, plus it's backed by a 5-year limited warranty
- Small settings and flags: Web Storage is appropriate. Keep values small and parse them once.
- Large or structured records, or work that must not block the main thread: consider IndexedDB, which MDN distinguishes from Web Storage by its own storage management and quotas.
- Cached network responses: the Cache API is designed for request and response pairs. MDN lists it alongside IndexedDB and the File System API as having browser-specific storage management.
- Data that must survive browser cleanup: store it on a server or provide an export, regardless of which browser API you choose.
When comparing these options, weigh asynchronous access, data model, size limits, indexing, and offline behavior against your workload. The right choice depends on those requirements rather than on a general ranking.
Extensions use a different storage model
If your code runs as a browser extension, page-oriented assumptions break. Chrome’s extension documentation separates the dedicated chrome.storage API from page Web Storage. Extension service workers cannot use Web Storage, and content scripts share Web Storage with the host page they are injected into. (Chrome for Developers, “chrome.storage | API”)
Checks before adopting namespaced-storage
This article describes the browser behavior that any namespacing layer must work within. It does not document the namespaced-storage project’s API, supported browsers, or performance. Before you depend on it, confirm these points in the project’s own repository and documentation:
Recommended Free Tools
- Which storage backend it wraps (localStorage, sessionStorage, or another API) and whether it changes the origin scope described above.
- How it reports quota failures: whether errors are thrown, returned, or swallowed.
- Its browser support, and whether it has been verified for extension contexts if you need that.
- How it handles serialization of non-string values and the synchronous execution cost of large writes.
- Whether a namespace prefix is enforced or only a convention that teams must follow.
A namespace makes shared browser storage easier to organize. It does not make the storage itself larger, asynchronous, or durable. Design for quota failure and eviction from the start, and move data that must survive into a storage system you control.
