Chrome and Firefox both moved to faster major-release schedules in September 2026. That makes browser-version mix worth checking before you call a field-data shift a site regression—but it does not mean every release will move your metrics.
What changed in Chrome and Firefox
The release schedules changed on different dates, and the details matter when you compare RUM periods. Google’s Chrome for Developers announced the schedule in March 2026 and confirmed its implementation in September. Mozilla announced Firefox’s change in August 2026.

| Browser | Cadence change | First release on the faster schedule | Scope and qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome | From every four weeks to every two weeks | Chrome 153 Stable, September 8, 2026 | Desktop, Android, and iOS. Dev and Canary were unchanged; Extended Stable kept a longer cycle. Google’s September 8 implementation update said Chrome 154 Beta was available ahead of its September 22 Stable release. |
| Firefox | To every two weeks | Firefox 155, September 1, 2026 | Mozilla described the change as more frequent updates, not twice as many features. Dot releases may still be issued when needed. |
These dates mark browser release events, not the day every user in your audience updates. Treat them as useful calendar markers, not as proof that your RUM population changed all at once.

How a browser release can change RUM data
RUM describes the experience of the users and page views that actually sent data during a period. A percentile therefore reflects both performance and the makeup of that observed population. When a new browser version spreads, the proportion of views from each version can change. If those versions have different performance characteristics—or simply reach different types of users—the overall percentile can move without a site deployment.

That is a possibility to test against your own traffic, not a guaranteed effect of faster releases. A version change and a metric change occurring near one another do not establish that the browser caused the shift. Other population changes, such as device or country mix, may also affect the result.
Exact-major-version cohorts may also become shorter-lived and thinner as major releases arrive more often. The risk grows when you further divide a cohort by route, device, country, or experiment. A percentile based on a small or changing slice can be difficult to compare meaningfully with an earlier one.

How to tell a browser-mix shift from a site regression
Compare like with like before attributing a field-data change to your site. Keep an overall series as a reference, then use browser-specific slices to investigate what changed in the population.
- Check the timeline. Mark browser Beta and Stable releases alongside application deployments, CDN changes, tag-manager updates, and RUM instrumentation changes. Use the release dates as annotations, not as assumptions that users updated on those dates.
- Compare browser and major-version distribution. Look at the share of views by browser and major version in the periods before and after the metric shift. Note whether the overall population changed, even if individual version cohorts appear stable.
- Check sample counts and metric completion. Before interpreting a slice, confirm how many observations it contains and whether the metric was successfully reported for a comparable share of them. Establish minimum sample and completion thresholds in advance; there is no universal numeric cutoff prescribed here.
- Check audience and page scope. Keep route or URL scope, device or form factor, country or other relevant audience mix, and experiment cohort consistent. A shift in any of these can make a period-to-period comparison misleading.
- Fall back to a broader cohort when needed. If an exact-major-version slice does not meet your pre-set thresholds, widen the browser cohort rather than treating a thin slice as decisive. Preserve the unsegmented series so the version-level explanation remains anchored to overall experience.
- Preserve instrumentation context. Record the RUM instrumentation version alongside page views. A change in what gets recorded or how completion is measured can look like a change in user experience.
A browser-specific shift that coincides with a change in version distribution is a useful lead, not a causal verdict. Harry Roberts, writing in CSS Wizardry’s August 26, 2026 article, puts the distinction plainly: “None of this makes a percentile wrong; it changes the questions needed to interpret it.”

What to do with unexplained TTFB time
Navigation Timing exposes several phases that help describe time to first byte (TTFB): redirects, DNS lookup, connection setup, and the request-to-response interval. CSS Wizardry calls the remaining portion after subtracting those exposed phases Unattributed Navigation Overhead (UNO).
UNO is a measured remainder, not a diagnosis. Do not automatically label it server work or assume that hidden redirects explain it. Record it both as a duration and as an occurrence count, then investigate how it varies across landing page, campaign, referrer, browser, and connection.
Rank #4
Roberts reports 7,131,737 UNO observations and 166 visible redirects in one unnamed client dataset. The article does not specify the client’s identity, collection method, or representativeness, so those figures should not be treated as an industry-wide rate or used to infer that redirects caused the unexplained time.
Where DevTools fits—and where it does not
Chrome DevTools Live Metrics can help you reproduce and inspect soft-navigation Core Web Vitals locally. That is useful for investigating a possible explanation, but a local browser session is not the production user population. Use lab observations to develop or test an explanation, then compare it with field RUM; do not substitute one for the other.
