A browser layout engine calculates the size and position of page content from the document structure and styles. It is the part of a browser’s rendering work that decides where content boxes go and how large they are; later stages handle tasks such as painting and rasterizing the page for display.
What a browser layout engine does
When a browser processes a page, it uses the document’s structure and CSS styles to work out the geometry of the content: the dimensions of elements and their positions relative to one another. WebKit describes this calculation of box positions and sizes as “layout” (WebCore Rendering III – Layout Basics).

For example, changing a container’s width can change both the container’s dimensions and the positions of its contents. The browser may need to recalculate layout to reflect those changes.

Layout is one stage in a larger process, not the whole process of turning a web page into pixels. A simplified sequence is:
#1 Best Overall
- The browser parses HTML into a document structure, commonly represented as the DOM.
- It resolves CSS into styles for the page’s elements.
- Layout calculates the elements’ sizes and positions.
- Later work, including paint and rasterization, prepares the visible output.
This is a teaching model rather than a rule that every page update reruns every stage. Chrome’s RenderingNG documentation describes separate stages for style, layout, pre-paint, paint, compositing, and raster work, and explains that the browser can skip stages when an update does not require them (RenderingNG architecture). For instance, scrolling can often be handled without recalculating layout or repainting the page (Chrome’s Blink rendering pipeline).
Layout engine, rendering engine, and browser engine
These terms overlap in general usage, so it helps to state what you mean. In the narrow sense, a layout engine calculates page geometry from document structure and styles. A rendering engine is often used as another name for that component, or for the broader work of turning web content into a visible page. MDN groups “rendering engine,” “layout engine,” and “browser engine” as overlapping terms in its rendering engine glossary.

Browser engine can also refer to a broader part of the browser’s architecture. A browser includes other systems, such as networking, process management, and JavaScript execution; Chromium’s architecture documentation distinguishes its renderer from the wider browser process (Chromium multi-process architecture). When precision matters, use “layout” for the geometry-calculating stage and “rendering” for the wider path to the displayed page.
How layout differs from JavaScript and graphics work
JavaScript execution
A JavaScript engine runs scripts; a layout engine calculates geometry. They are distinct components, although a script can change the DOM and prompt the browser to update styles or layout. Chrome’s documentation identifies V8 as Blink’s JavaScript and WebAssembly engine, while Blink handles rendering tasks (Blink).

Graphics, paint, and rasterization
Layout determines where boxes belong and how big they are. Subsequent graphics work produces the visual presentation. Mozilla’s Gecko overview separates style, layout, and graphics responsibilities, with graphics presenting the frame tree (Gecko overview). Chrome’s RenderingNG overview likewise treats layout, paint, and raster as distinct stages (RenderingNG architecture).

Blink, Gecko, and WebKit are common examples of browser rendering engines. The browser-to-engine relationship depends on the browser and platform:

| Engine | Examples and qualification |
|---|---|
| Blink | Used by Chromium-based browsers. Chrome Developers lists Chrome, Android WebView, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave among them (Blink). |
| Gecko | Mozilla-developed layout engine used by Firefox (MDN’s Gecko glossary). |
| WebKit | Used by Safari. Chrome on iOS and iPadOS also uses WebKit, according to Chrome Developers (Blink). |
These are examples, not a permanent compatibility guarantee for every browser version or platform. In particular, “Chrome uses Blink” needs the iOS and iPadOS qualification above.
