Browser-in-the-Browser Attack Uses Fake Meta Muse Ads Lure to Steal Credentials

A fake Muse Ads portal used an in-page browser imitation to capture credentials and MFA responses. Here’s how to spot the deception and respond to possible exposure.

A fake “Muse Ads” portal used a browser-in-the-browser trick to make a phishing page look like a Google or Okta sign-in window. The real browser stayed on the attacker’s site while the page collected credentials and authentication responses. Island disclosed the operation on October 6, 2026; its report describes phishing and social engineering, not a vulnerability in Meta Muse, Google sign-in, or Okta.

What happened in the fake Muse Ads campaign?

Island researchers Oleg Zaytsev and Ofek Ronen say operators added Muse Ads at museads.ai on September 16, 2026, eight days after Meta announced Muse. The site presented itself as “Your AI ads manager for paid media workflows,” offering to connect advertising accounts and help run sponsored placements. The lure was part of a broader operation impersonating advertising products associated with Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Manus. The portals offered plausible business workflows, but their common call to action was “Connect.” Island’s report describes the campaign; Meta’s September 8 announcement is the reference for the real Muse product.

What happens when you click “Connect”?

Instead of sending the user to the genuine identity-provider login page, the phishing site draws a simulated browser window inside its own page. The imitation can show browser-like controls and a convincing address such as accounts.google.com or an Okta tenant. But the outer browser remains on the phishing domain. Island’s researchers describe the fake interface as capturing credentials and MFA responses while an operator watches the interaction and chooses which authentication prompt to display next.

The platform could prompt for password retries and different challenges, including SMS or authenticator codes, Google approval or QR flows, and Okta push or number-matching screens. Island also describes device fingerprinting and Socket.IO communications supporting operator control. The login window is therefore not evidence that the real provider’s site is open: the visitor is interacting with an attacker-controlled imitation.

How to tell whether an authentication window is fake

  • Check the outer browser’s address bar. Verify the origin shown by the browser itself, not an address bar, lock icon, tab, QR prompt, or security dialog drawn inside the page. Island’s guidance is that a page can imitate browser chrome but cannot change the real browser origin.
  • Verify the integration independently. Navigate to the provider’s official site or an account portal you already trust, then confirm that the product and connection flow exist. Treat an unsolicited invitation, beta offer, or unfamiliar request to connect advertising accounts as a request for account access.
  • Do not enter credentials just because the page looks familiar. A simulated Google or Okta screen can still collect a real password and authentication response. If the request came from an unfamiliar portal, stop and verify it through a separate, trusted route.

Why advertising accounts are an attractive target

Island says the lures targeted agency staff, media buyers, and manager-account administrators. An advertising identity may provide access to business accounts, billing methods, budgets, and multiple clients. With control, an attacker may launch unauthorized campaigns, add administrators, lock out the legitimate owner, or sell an established account. A compromised manager account can expose client accounts as well as the direct victim’s own access.

The scale figures reported around this operation need careful context. Mimecast said its separate, broader research tracked 6.4 million detections of systematic Meta Business Manager and Google Ads account theft over four years; that is not a count of unique victims of the Muse Ads lure. Mimecast also describes account reputation and history as valuable to criminals and recovery as potentially lasting weeks or months. Those are observations about ad-account theft overall, not outcomes established for every victim of this campaign. Mimecast’s July 2026 report provides that broader context.

What evidence is available about the operation?

Island says its researchers saw hundreds of victim submissions to the phishing platform, and that activity was ongoing when the report was written; it does not give an exact submission total in that statement. The Hacker News reported additional figures attributed to Island’s broader delivery-cluster observations: about 850 paid-ad landings, 26 lookalike ChatGPT destinations, and 71 Google Ads campaign IDs over a three-month period ending August 2026. These figures describe the broader delivery cluster, not confirmed credential submissions to museads.ai. The Hacker News’ October 6 report gives the secondary account.

Island lists museads.ai among campaign domains and mentions technical indicators including /api/create/user, /api/send/ip, and Socket.IO events such as operator-command and telegram-command. These are indicators documented in the report, not a guarantee that the domain or infrastructure currently behaves the same way; phishing infrastructure can change or be taken down. Do not visit a suspected phishing site to test it.

What to do if you entered your password or approved a prompt

  1. Secure the identity account through its official route. Open the provider’s site or app independently, change the exposed password, and review available account-security and recovery settings. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too.
  2. Review advertising access and activity. Look for unfamiliar administrators or partners, changed recovery details, unapproved campaigns, and spending. Check client accounts reachable through manager-account permissions, not only the account where you first noticed the problem.
  3. Contact the advertising platform through official support. Report suspected account takeover and follow its account-recovery process. Removing a payment card by itself may not restore account control; Mimecast’s broader research describes recovery as potentially lengthy.
  4. Use phishing-resistant authentication where supported. Island recommends origin-bound passkeys and hardware-backed authentication, which reduce reliance on reusable passwords and one-time-code material. A FIDO2 security key is one category of hardware-backed option; the report does not evaluate or endorse specific manufacturers or models.

What this incident does—and does not—show

The reported operation abuses impersonation and a convincing interface to capture information that users type or approve. It does not establish that Meta’s actual Muse agent, Google sign-in, or Okta was compromised or contained the vulnerability. The practical security boundary is the real browser origin and the legitimacy of the requested integration—not the appearance of a login window rendered inside another page.
