Arif Dogan’s browser CAD project does more than display a DWG: it converts the drawing into a structured building model, lets people edit that model in 2D and 3D, and gives an AI assistant validated tools to inspect or change it. The hard part is not putting a chat panel beside a drawing. It is inferring what the geometry means, keeping edits safe, and making the same model consistent across import, editing, export, and undo.
What the browser CAD editor does
In his account published July 2, 2026, Arif Dogan describes a workflow that starts with an uploaded AutoCAD DWG floor plan and ends with a model an editor and an AI agent can both work on. The application converts the DWG to DXF, reconstructs building elements from its geometry, stores those elements as structured records, and presents them in a browser editor and 3D viewer.

The model includes walls, openings, rooms, dimensions, and labels. Dogan also describes quantity take-offs and export back to DWG. In the chat panel, Claude can ask questions about the model or make changes through application tools. Those changes appear in the editors and can be undone.
The key design decision is a shared semantic model: import, human editing, AI changes, and export all operate on structured building data rather than treating the drawing as an undifferentiated image or a pile of lines.

Why importing a DWG is not the same as understanding a floor plan
A CAD drawing may depict a wall using several ordinary line segments rather than an explicit object labeled “wall.” As Dogan puts it, “a dwg file does not contain walls. it contains lines.” Turning those lines into useful building elements requires interpretation. The resulting wall type, opening, room boundary, or unit may be inferred by the application rather than explicitly stored in the original file.
Conversion and recovery
Dogan’s pipeline runs LibreDWG as a subprocess to convert DWG to DXF, then processes the DXF with ezdxf and custom parsing. Isolating the converter means a crash in that process need not bring down the main application. For damaged files that the normal recovery path cannot parse, he describes a fallback raw-DXF tag scanner.
Reconstructing semantic objects
After conversion, the importer explodes blocks, samples arcs, and splits polylines into geometry it can classify. It uses layer-name hints in multiple languages, then groups wall-like fragments by approximate direction and offset. Projected line intervals are merged, with some gaps retained as possible openings. Door and window segments are projected onto nearby walls.
When layer names do not help identify walls, the system falls back to geometric classification and warns that the reconstruction is approximate. Storey height, door height, and window sill height can also be defaults rather than facts contained in the drawing; Dogan says these assumptions are recorded with warnings. That distinction matters when the model is used for counts or quantities: an inferred value should not quietly become indistinguishable from source-file data.

Units, rooms, and ambiguity
The importer does not blindly trust the DXF $INSUNITS header. Dogan says it estimates units from the drawing’s geometric extent because that header may be wrong. This is a useful validation signal, not proof that the chosen unit is correct: users still need to check whether the resulting dimensions make sense for the plan.
Rooms are derived from wall centerlines. The system splits segments at intersections, builds a half-edge walk, traces bounded faces, discards the exterior, and assigns labels using point-in-polygon tests. Dogan recounts that an L-shaped plan exposed a flaw in a bounding-box heuristic; he changed the rule to discard the largest face. This illustrates why plausible-looking geometry alone is not enough to guarantee that a room boundary was interpreted correctly.
How the editor keeps drawing work responsive
Dogan organizes the canvas into layers that change at different rates. The split helps avoid redrawing stable content whenever the cursor moves.

He also describes batched drawing paths and spatial indexes to limit work during pointer movement. Snapping candidates are prioritized in this order: endpoints, intersections, midpoints, perpendicular or on-line candidates, then grid. Undo is based on whole-model snapshots, with edits committed as transactions.

Reported performance figures
The figures below are Dogan’s project measurements, reported in his July 2, 2026 account. They are not independent benchmarks, and the software-rasterizer timings should not be read as a general measure of browser CAD performance.

The smoke-test result describes crash behavior in Dogan’s corpus; it does not establish that every file imported with correct walls, openings, units, or rooms. Stability and semantic accuracy are different questions.

Dogan says he exposed thirteen application tools to Claude: three read operations and ten write operations. The read tools return a model summary, list elements, and calculate a quantity take-off. The write tools cover walls, openings, rooms, annotations, storey data, naming, and deletion. A user might ask, “how many doors and windows are there?” In Dogan’s example, the assistant gives counts and flags a 300 mm opening as a likely mis-detected door. That is useful review assistance, but the answer depends on how well the importer reconstructed the model.

One validated write path
AI writes go through the same backend save path as editor changes. Rather than trusting a model-generated action because it came from a tool call, the application validates the mutation against its schema and enforces domain rules in tool code. Dogan lists opening-fit checks, default sizes, automatically assigned marks, and cascade deletes among the relevant behaviors. If a tool call fails validation, the error can be returned so the model can correct and retry.
Schema validation alone is not enough. Dogan says fuzz testing uncovered a negative-width opening that passed a fit check, prompting explicit range validation. The lesson is practical: tool definitions describe the inputs an agent should send, but server-side invariants must still reject values that violate the model’s rules.
Keeping the editor and agent in sync
Before an agent turn, the frontend flushes pending saves so the agent does not work from an older server model while the user has unsaved edits in the browser. After tool changes, the frontend fetches the updated model and commits the result as one undo transaction. This makes a multi-tool AI edit reversible as a single user action rather than scattering it through the human editor’s undo history.
Dogan’s concise principle is: “an ai copilot without undo is a liability. with undo it is just a very fast colleague.” In this design, undo is not just a convenience; it is part of how an AI edit remains accountable to the person using the drawing.

What this project demonstrates—and what it does not
Dogan estimates that “90% of the time” went into extraction, geometry, and the editor. That retrospective estimate fits the project’s central engineering challenge: natural-language interaction is only one layer. The harder foundation is a model whose geometry has been interpreted, whose assumptions are visible, and whose mutations are checked consistently.
He also reports that commercial browser CAD SDKs he considered either lacked actual DWG editing or started around $7,500 a year for a general-DWG scope he did not need. That is his 2026 market observation, not a current price survey or a comprehensive comparison of vendors. The account does not establish a broader product recommendation.
The project is best understood as a specific implementation, not an independently audited CAD product or a general proof that an LLM can reliably edit arbitrary DWG files. Its reported test corpus, timings, and design choices belong to Dogan’s application. The transferable ideas are narrower: treat imported geometry as uncertain until classified, expose domain-specific operations rather than raw drawing internals, validate every write on the server, coordinate saves with agent turns, and make the resulting changes undoable.
