There is no direct trial showing that Brick works better than app-based screen-time blockers overall. Brick’s separate NFC device adds a physical step to ending a block, which may help if you tend to override limits on the same phone you’re trying to manage. An app blocker or built-in control is usually the simpler option. The better fit depends on which kind of limit you are more likely to keep.
What makes Brick different from an app blocker?
Brick pairs a companion app with a small NFC-equipped device. You choose apps and modes in the app, then tap your phone against the Brick to start or end a blocking session. The device’s practical distinction is not that it makes blocking impossible to undo: it moves the action to a separate object. If you leave that object out of reach, retrieving it adds friction at the moment you want to resume a blocked app.

App-based blockers run on the phone they regulate. Apple Screen Time and Android Digital Wellbeing are built-in controls; third-party tools such as Opal are another option. They can be easier to configure and change on the phone, but bypass behavior varies by product and settings. Brick LLC says Screen Time and Digital Wellbeing limits are easy to bypass; that is the company’s comparison claim, not evidence that every configuration is equally easy to override.

What the evidence says—and does not say
A preregistered randomized trial published in 2025 tested blocking mobile internet on participants’ smartphones for two weeks. Calls and texts remained available, and participants could use the internet on nonmobile devices. The study authors reported improvements in mental health, subjective well-being and objectively measured sustained attention; 91% improved on at least one of those outcomes. This supports the possibility that reducing constant mobile internet access can help, but the intervention was broader than blocking selected apps and did not test Brick against app-only blockers. Read the PNAS Nexus trial.
Adherence is part of the picture. Of 467 people who committed to blocking mobile internet, 119 (25.5%) met the study authors’ preregistered definition of compliance; 266 set up the required app. Those figures describe that trial, not the likely compliance rate for Brick or any commercial blocker. They also do not show that hardware would have improved adherence. See the study’s full-text record.

A separate preregistered field experiment studied two common screen-time reduction strategies in 112 participants, but its accessible abstract does not provide enough result detail to rank those strategies. It did not compare them with Brick. An umbrella review of digital-addiction interventions likewise does not establish whether physical or app-based blockers work better.

Consider Brick if you routinely override limits
A separate object may be useful if the main problem is that the option to disable a limit is right on the phone. The benefit depends on your routine: putting Brick beside the phone adds little retrieval friction, while storing it elsewhere makes ending a session less immediate. In Tom’s Guide’s October 2, 2026 review, the reviewer recorded 6 hours 48 minutes on social media on one day without Brick and 1 hour 15 minutes on a day with it. That is one person’s observation across two days, not a controlled test or a typical expected result.

Consider an app or built-in control if convenience matters most
If you want to try limits without buying or carrying hardware, start with a blocker already available on your phone or a third-party app. Check its actual controls and how it handles overriding, scheduled blocks and access to essential apps; those details vary. There is no evidence here that all app blockers are equally easy to bypass or that one named app is a universal winner.
Keep necessary access in the plan
Before blocking, decide what must remain available for work, navigation, family or emergencies. Configure modes and exceptions around those needs, then see whether the setup is strict enough to help without getting in the way. Brick’s official page states minimum support of Android 12.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later; check its current compatibility information before buying.

The timed safe can be set up to 10 days and is your external motivation to cut back on your addictions and build habits to live a happier life.
- COMBAT ADDICTION: Over 21 million Americans deal with at least one addiction, and the average person spends upwards of 5 hours a day on their phone. - SCIENTIFICALLY BACKED RESULTS: The kSafe container is a precommitment device, so you can make smart decisions before the temptation strikes. Studies from Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, and Yale show that precommitment devices are the best way to fight temptation by combating decision fatigue and conserving willpower.
How to choose without assuming one is proven better
- Identify the failure point. If you ignore or dismiss limits while holding your phone, a blocker that adds an outside step may be worth considering. If you mainly need reminders or scheduled limits, a built-in or app-based control may be enough.
- Check the real bypass path. Try the settings you intend to use and note how many steps it takes to override them. Do not assume the experience is identical across Screen Time, Digital Wellbeing and third-party apps.
- Protect essential tasks. Choose which apps, people and functions must remain available during a block, and verify the settings before relying on them.
- Check the practical costs. Brick adds a hardware purchase and something to keep track of. Tom’s Guide reported $59 for a US direct purchase on October 2, 2026; confirm the current price and operating-system support on Brick’s site.
- Judge it by adherence. Try the arrangement consistently and pay attention to whether you keep the limits, not just whether the product can block an app. A tool that is technically strict but routinely abandoned may not suit you.
Bottom line on Brick vs. app blockers
Brick’s case is added physical friction, not proven overall superiority. Choose it if retrieving a separate device seems more likely to interrupt an impulsive override; choose an app or built-in control if ease, flexibility and no extra hardware matter more. Existing studies support reducing mobile internet or screen time as a potentially useful strategy in specific settings, but they do not settle which blocker format works best.
