In the U.S., the free way to watch local channels without cable is an over-the-air (OTA) antenna connected to your television. It picks up the broadcast signals that local stations send out, and the FCC describes this as watching a station over the air without a pay-TV subscription. The paid alternative is a live-TV streaming service, but it only helps if it carries the exact local stations you want. Your address decides which option works, so check reception and lineups before you spend money.
Start with the antenna route
An antenna is the only route that delivers full local broadcast signals without a monthly bill. Once it is installed, the TV receives stations directly from their transmitters. There is no account to open and no streaming plan to maintain. The trade-off is that reception depends on distance, terrain, obstructions and where the antenna sits, so the same antenna can perform very differently in two homes on the same street.

Before buying hardware, confirm that the signals reach your home. The FCC’s Digital TV Reception Maps page lets you look up predicted reception by address. Those predictions assume a traditional outdoor antenna mounted 30 feet above ground level. Treat the result as a planning estimate. An indoor antenna, a lower mounting height or a tree line can all reduce what you receive, and the map cannot promise what your particular set-up will pick up.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck predicted reception before you buy
- Open the FCC Digital TV Reception Maps page at transition.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/dtvmaps and enter your street address.
- Note which stations are listed, their call signs, their channel numbers and the direction each transmitter lies from your home.
- Compare that list with the stations you actually want. Network affiliates, independent stations and subchannels are often separate entries, so confirm each one you care about.
- Choose an antenna designed for the frequency bands and directions you need. If the strongest stations sit in one direction, a directional antenna aimed that way usually does better than a generic omnidirectional model.
- If the map shows weak or mixed results, plan for an outdoor or attic mount, which is closer to the map’s modelling assumption than a spot behind the TV.
Set up the antenna and scan for channels
- Mount the antenna and run coaxial cable to the TV. Position it as high and as clear of obstructions as practical.
- Connect the cable to the TV’s antenna or cable input. Some sets label it “Antenna/Cable” or “Air.” On TVs with a separate source menu, choose the antenna or air input when prompted.
- Open the TV’s channel setup menu. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so look for “Auto Scan,” “Channel Scan,” or “Antenna Setup,” and start the scan.
- When the scan finishes, check the channel list for your target stations and their subchannels. Confirm a few stations on the screen before concluding the set-up is finished.
- If stations are missing, move the antenna, change its height or aim, and run the scan again. Repeat until the stations you need hold a steady picture.
Analog-only televisions need a converter box
The FCC’s consumer guidance says a television that receives only analog signals needs a digital converter box to pick up over-the-air digital broadcasts. This guidance dates from the transition from analog to digital broadcasting, which ended for full-power stations in June 2009. It applies to analog-only sets. Most televisions sold in recent years include a digital tuner, but the mere presence of a TV does not tell you which kind you have. Check the set’s specifications or manual for an ATSC or digital tuner. If the set has only an analog tuner, you will need a converter box for each TV.

Streaming live-TV alternatives
If you want internet delivery instead of an antenna, several live-TV services carry local network stations in many markets. Availability varies by area, and in Sling’s case it also depends on the plan you choose. Each service provides its own location lookup, which is the reliable way to confirm your local affiliates before you subscribe.
| Service | Where local channels are checked | What to confirm before subscribing |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | YouTube TV Help, Available locations & networks on YouTube TV | That your ZIP code is covered and that the specific network stations and subchannels you want are listed for your area. |
| Hulu + Live TV | Hulu’s guide, How to Stream Local Channels | That your local stations are offered in your area and that the plan you are considering includes them. |
| Sling | Sling’s Watching local channels with Sling TV help page and its antenna guidance | That local channels depend on location and on the plan you choose. Check the lineup for the specific plan, not only the service in general. |
YouTube TV’s overview page states that it reaches “over 98% of U.S. TV households.” That is the provider’s own coverage claim, not an independent measurement, and it says nothing about whether a particular address receives a particular station. Prices for these services change frequently, so check each provider’s pricing page before comparing costs.
Record over-the-air shows
An antenna alone gives you live broadcasts only. If you want to record shows, you need extra hardware.

Over-the-air DVRs
An OTA DVR connects to the antenna and stores recordings on an internal or external drive. Confirm that the model supports the features you need, such as scheduled recording, series rules and playback on other devices. Product features and support change over time, so verify the current specifications before buying.
Network tuners
A network tuner is a device that receives antenna signals and streams them to phones, tablets and other screens on your home network. Check that it supports your TV or apps, that it reads your station list correctly, and that it can handle the stations you care about.
Troubleshoot weak or missing channels
- Missing stations after a scan: Repeat the scan with the antenna in the same position, then try again after moving it. Some stations change channels occasionally, so a rescan may be needed after a change.
- Picture breaks up in bad weather: A poor signal often shows the problem. Improve the antenna’s height and clearance from obstructions before buying an amplifier.
- Only some subchannels appear: Subchannels are separate broadcasts that can be weaker or intermittent. Check the station list again after each scan.
- A station is listed on the map but does not appear on your TV: The map is an estimate for the modelled outdoor setup. Try a higher or outdoor location, a different aim, or an antenna built for the station’s band.
Choose your route
| Route | Cost pattern | What to verify | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OTA antenna | One-time hardware purchase. No pay-TV subscription is needed for broadcast reception. | Predicted reception on the FCC map, station direction and obstructions, and what the TV actually picks up after a scan. | Viewers who want free local broadcasts and are willing to set up an antenna. |
| Paid live-TV streaming | Recurring subscription. Current prices are on each provider’s pricing page. | That your ZIP code is covered and that your exact local stations are included in the plan you want. | Viewers who want internet delivery and whose local stations are carried in their area. |
| Antenna plus OTA DVR or network tuner | Hardware purchase. Some devices may have optional service features. | Device compatibility with your TV or apps, recording needs, and current product support. | Viewers who want to record free broadcasts or stream them around the house. |
In short, start with the FCC map. If your key stations show up with a usable signal, an antenna is the cheapest way to keep them. If they do not, or you want a service with on-demand content and cloud DVR, compare live-TV lineups by ZIP code before committing to a subscription.
