Breadcrumb V10 is a free recipe-page breadcrumb example from Colorlib. It pairs a visible navigation trail with matching schema.org BreadcrumbList data. Colorlib describes it as plain HTML and CSS with no JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap files, or plugins, so it can be used by itself or added to a Bootstrap project.
What Breadcrumb V10 includes
Colorlib describes V10 as a recipe-page example in which each visible breadcrumb level has a corresponding structured-data ListItem with the same name, position, and URL. The listing says its structured data appears in the page head.

- Arrow separators that the listing says are hidden from screen readers using CSS alternative text.
- A collapsible panel for viewing the structured data.
- No JavaScript dependency.

How to add the breadcrumb to a page
Use V10’s HTML and CSS as the starting point, then adapt the trail to match the actual hierarchy of your site. The visible trail and its structured data should describe the same pages, in the same order, with matching names and URLs.
- Choose the trail. Identify the parent pages that lead to the current page. Keep the hierarchy useful rather than listing unrelated destinations.
- Update the visible breadcrumb. Set each ancestor’s label and link to the correct page; make the last item the current page.
- Update the structured data. For every visible level, ensure the corresponding
ListItemhas the same name, position, and URL. Check that the data describes the page as it appears after your edits. - Integrate the styles. If using Bootstrap, confirm that the project has the styles required by any Bootstrap classes you retain. V10’s listing says it does not bundle Bootstrap files.
- Check interaction and assistive-technology output. Navigate the trail with a keyboard and test it with the browser and assistive technologies used by your audience. A visual separator or styling choice alone does not establish that the whole component works accessibly.
Use Bootstrap’s breadcrumb semantics where appropriate
Bootstrap 5.3 describes breadcrumbs as a way to show a page’s position in a navigational hierarchy. Its documented pattern places an ordered list inside a navigation landmark labeled breadcrumb, uses .breadcrumb-item for the items, and marks the current page with aria-current="page". Bootstrap also permits an unordered list. The current-page marker communicates which item represents the page being viewed.

<li class="breadcrumb-item"><a href="/recipes/">Recipes</a></li>

</nav>
This is Bootstrap’s documented pattern, not a claim that V10 includes Bootstrap’s bundled styling. The listing describes V10 as standalone HTML and CSS. Read Bootstrap 5.3’s breadcrumb documentation.
How to change the Bootstrap breadcrumb divider
Bootstrap adds breadcrumb separators with CSS rather than requiring a separator element in every item. In Bootstrap 5.3, the divider can be customized locally with the --bs-breadcrumb-divider CSS custom property or across a Sass build with $breadcrumb-divider. Sass also documents $breadcrumb-divider-flipped for right-to-left layouts.
Rank #3
Set a divider with CSS
For a local change, set the custom property on the breadcrumb. A quoted character can be used as the divider value:
.breadcrumb {
--bs-breadcrumb-divider: '>';
}
Set a divider in Sass
For Sass configuration, Bootstrap documents the $breadcrumb-divider variable. When the divider is a string such as >, the documentation calls for Sass’s quote() function. An embedded SVG is another documented divider option. Choose the method that fits how your project loads Bootstrap styles, and check the result in both left-to-right and right-to-left layouts if your site supports both.
Bootstrap 5.3 documents the divider options and Sass variables.

The W3C WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide example uses an ordered list inside a navigation landmark labeled “Breadcrumb.” It adds separators through CSS, rather than making them separate list content, because the trail’s semantics already identify the navigation and announcing visual separators could add redundant verbosity.

The APG cautions that its example is illustrative, notes possible support gaps across browser and assistive-technology combinations, and recommends testing implementations before production. That is a useful caution for V10 too: Colorlib’s description of hidden arrow separators does not by itself prove that every edited version works consistently with every assistive technology. See the W3C APG breadcrumb example and its implementation cautions.
When to use V10 versus a Bootstrap-native breadcrumb
- Choose V10 as a standalone starting point if you want its recipe-page design and matching structured data without depending on Bootstrap’s files. Adapt the HTML and CSS to your site.
- Use Bootstrap’s breadcrumb pattern if your project already uses Bootstrap and you want its documented classes, navigation landmark pattern, and divider customization options.
- Retain matching structured data if you keep the visible hierarchy represented by V10. If you change or remove a visible level, review the corresponding structured-data item so the two representations do not contradict one another.
