What you are actually comparing
Brave Shields and YouTube Premium overlap in the result you may notice first—fewer interruptions while watching YouTube—but they are not equivalent products.
Brave Shields is browser-level filtering
Shields is built into the Brave browser. When you open YouTube in a Brave tab, Shields can block advertising and tracking elements that the browser identifies on that page. The benefit follows the browser session, not your YouTube account. Watching the same video in another browser or in a separate YouTube app does not automatically carry the Shield settings with it.

Because filtering depends on rules that change as websites change, Brave cannot promise that every YouTube ad will be blocked forever. Brave has documented occasions when YouTube temporarily circumvented Shields and says it deployed fixes. A page that is ad-free today can therefore behave differently after a YouTube change, a Brave update, or a filter-list update.
YouTube Premium is an account membership
Premium attaches benefits to a signed-in YouTube account. YouTube describes ad-free playback on supported devices with YouTube access, together with background play and downloads in the YouTube family of mobile apps where those features are available. The membership is designed to follow your account across compatible phones, tablets, browsers, smart TVs, game consoles, and other supported devices, although the exact benefit differs by platform.
Premium removes ads served by YouTube, not every commercial message inside a video. A creator can still include a sponsorship, brand mention, promotional link, merchandising shelf, or other promotion in the video itself. YouTube also notes that some live-event or Primetime Channels promotions can remain visible.

How ad blocking differs in practice
Using Brave for YouTube
With Brave, the basic workflow is simple: install the current Brave browser, open YouTube there, and leave Shields enabled for the site. The browser applies its filtering while the page loads. You do not need a YouTube membership to use Shields, and the feature is not limited to one signed-in account.
Shields can also block tracking requests and other page elements, so its effect is broader than removing a pre-roll or mid-roll advertisement. That broader filtering can occasionally change page behavior. A login prompt, embedded player, comments section, or other component may work differently when a script is blocked. If a page fails to load correctly, use the Shields control for that site to review the blocking level, then reload after making a change.
Why Brave ad blocking can change
YouTube actively changes the way it delivers video and detects ad-blocking tools. When a site change defeats a filter, the browser may show an ad, display an anti-ad-blocking notice, or fail to start playback until Shields is adjusted. Brave’s documented fixes show that this is a moving technical contest rather than a permanent guarantee.
That variability is the main trade-off for choosing a no-membership browser solution. You avoid a recurring YouTube membership, but you may occasionally need to update Brave, refresh filter lists, change a site-specific Shields setting, or wait for a compatibility fix. A Premium account is less dependent on page-filtering rules because YouTube controls the entitlement on its own services.

What Premium removes—and what it cannot
Premium removes advertising that YouTube serves around supported videos. It does not edit the video file or remove a creator’s own sponsorship segment. A host can still read an ad in the middle of a podcast, show a discount code, or point viewers to a promoted product. Promotional links, shelves, and some event-specific promotions can also remain.
If your definition of “ad-free” means no platform-served pre-roll and mid-roll interruptions, Premium is the more predictable option across supported devices. If you want a browser that also filters trackers on ordinary websites, Shields addresses a wider browsing need than a YouTube membership.
Background play and locked-screen listening
Brave on Android
Brave says Android users on version 1.87 and later receive improved picture-in-picture and background playback, including lock-screen playback controls. This is a Brave browser capability, so the exact result still depends on the Android release, battery restrictions, media permissions, and the page being played.
To try it, update Brave to at least version 1.87, open the YouTube video in Brave, start playback, and then leave the app or lock the screen. If playback stops, check Android’s battery-optimization settings for Brave, confirm that media playback is allowed, and test picture-in-picture from the site’s player. YouTube’s page behavior can also change independently of the browser.

Brave Playlist is a separate feature from ordinary tab playback. Brave describes Playlist as a way to add compatible media for background and offline playback. The Brave Help information updated April 24, 2026, identifies Playlist as currently available on iOS and desktop Nightly. Brave’s iOS product information also describes downloading Brave on iOS. Do not assume that Playlist is broadly available in the stable Android browser merely because Android background playback is documented separately.
On supported devices, Playlist keeps the media available inside Brave. It is not a general-purpose video file manager: the stored item cannot be moved to another device as an independent file, and Brave may remove it. This makes Playlist useful for a trip or a listening queue, but less suitable if you need files that another app can open.
YouTube Premium in mobile apps
Premium enables background play in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps where available, provided you are signed in to the membership account. You can leave the app, turn off the display, and use the operating system’s media controls while supported content continues to play.

There is an important exception: YouTube says background play is unavailable on the Shorts player. A Premium account therefore does not turn every YouTube surface into an audio player. For long-form videos, music tracks, podcasts, and other supported content, the mobile apps provide the most consistent background-play experience.

Offline access: two different meanings of “download”
Brave Playlist storage
Playlist can download compatible media for offline playback on supported devices. The copy is bound to Brave’s own storage and playback system. You cannot export it to your file manager, transfer it to another phone, or hand it to a different media player as a normal video file. Items can also be removed, so treat Playlist as managed offline access rather than permanent ownership.
The practical advantage is that the browser and the saved queue are in one place. The practical limitation is portability: if you replace the device or switch apps, the Playlist copy does not come with you as a standalone file.
YouTube Premium downloads
Premium downloads are created and played inside the YouTube or YouTube Music apps. Only videos that YouTube makes eligible can be downloaded; rights, location, account status, and the individual video all matter. The downloaded item is not an unrestricted file that you can copy to a computer or play in another application.
YouTube’s Android offline guidance says downloaded videos can generally be played offline for up to 29 days before the app must reconnect to verify availability. Some countries or regions allow up to 48 hours instead. If a video is no longer available, YouTube can remove it at the next synchronization. These limits mean a download is a renewable offline entitlement, not a permanent archive.
What happens when membership or access changes
Both systems can withdraw saved media. Playlist items may be removed by Brave, while YouTube downloads can disappear when the video’s rights change, the account is no longer eligible, or the app’s verification check fails. Keep the app signed in and reconnect before a journey if uninterrupted access matters.
Platform-by-platform decision points
Phone and tablet
For Android, Brave’s documented version threshold is 1.87 or later for improved picture-in-picture and background play. YouTube Premium’s background play and downloads are app features, so choose the YouTube app if you want the service’s official offline controls, quality settings, and account synchronization.

On iOS, Brave Playlist is the relevant Brave offline and background option identified by Brave’s current help and product information. Premium provides its own YouTube and YouTube Music app workflows. If you move between an iPhone and another device, Premium’s account-based model is generally easier to resume than a browser-local Playlist library.
Desktop and laptop
Brave is most directly useful on a desktop because Shields operates in the browser where you already watch. Brave also identifies Playlist support on desktop Nightly, which is a test-channel qualification rather than a promise that the feature is present in every stable desktop release.

Premium still removes YouTube-served ads when you are signed in on a supported desktop browser, but its signature background-play and offline-download benefits are aimed at mobile apps. A desktop Premium subscription should not be purchased solely for a native offline library if your primary use is a computer.
Television, streaming devices, and consoles
Brave’s cited benefits do not establish an equivalent experience inside a dedicated YouTube TV app. Unless the device can run the Brave browser in a usable way, Shields is not a drop-in replacement for an account entitlement on a television.
Premium is better aligned with shared screens and supported living-room devices because the ad-free entitlement follows the signed-in YouTube account. Background play and downloads remain separate mobile-app functions, so do not expect a television app to behave like a locked-screen audio player or an offline phone.

YouTube Premium Lite has a different feature set and is not simply a cheaper name for full Premium. YouTube’s current help information says Lite offers fewer interruptions plus background playback and downloads for most videos, while excluding Shorts and music content. Lite also does not include YouTube Music Premium.
Availability and terms vary by region. Before choosing Lite, confirm that the offer appears for your account and that the videos you watch most often fall within its “most videos” coverage. A viewer focused on music, Shorts, or YouTube Music should not assume Lite will provide the same benefits as full Premium.
Which option fits which viewer?
Choose Brave when browser viewing is your priority
- You already use Brave as your main browser and normally watch YouTube in a tab.
- You want ad and tracker filtering beyond YouTube rather than a YouTube-only membership.
- You can tolerate occasional compatibility changes and browser troubleshooting.
- You mainly need Android background playback or an iOS Playlist queue, not a portable video-file archive.
- You do not need YouTube Music Premium or a dedicated TV-app entitlement.
Choose full YouTube Premium for app and device coverage
- You watch through official YouTube apps on a phone, tablet, television, console, or other supported device.
- You want one signed-in account to carry ad-free viewing across supported YouTube platforms.
- You regularly listen with the screen locked in YouTube, YouTube Music, or YouTube Kids.
- You need official in-app downloads and accept reconnection and availability checks.
- You also want YouTube Music Premium.
Consider Premium Lite only for a specific viewing pattern
- Your region offers Lite and your account is eligible.
- Most of your viewing is ordinary, non-music video rather than Shorts.
- You accept that music benefits and YouTube Music Premium are excluded.
- You have checked the current local terms instead of assuming full Premium features apply.
Setup checklists
Set up Brave for YouTube
- Install Brave from its official distribution channel and update it before testing playback.
- Open YouTube in Brave and select the Shields icon in the browser toolbar.
- Leave Shields enabled, then reload the page and start a video.
- If playback is blocked or a page element fails, review the site-specific Shields setting, change only what is necessary, and reload.
- On Android, verify that Brave is version 1.87 or later when testing picture-in-picture or background playback.
- On supported iOS or desktop Nightly installations, use Playlist when you need Brave-managed offline or background playback, remembering that saved media stays inside Brave.
Set up YouTube Premium playback and downloads
- Sign in to the YouTube account that holds the Premium membership.
- In the YouTube or YouTube Music mobile app, open a supported video and use the download control.
- For locked-screen listening, start playback in the mobile app, leave the app, and use the operating system’s media controls.
- Reconnect periodically so the app can verify the membership and the continued availability of downloaded videos.
- On another device, sign in to the same account and confirm that the device and location support the benefit you need.
Common failure modes and fixes
“Brave used to block the ads, but now I see one”
First update Brave and reload YouTube. If the behavior continues, YouTube may have changed its ad delivery or detection. Check the site’s Shields settings and test with a clean tab. Do not treat a temporary success as a permanent guarantee; the browser and site will continue to evolve.
“Background playback stops when I lock the phone”
Confirm that you are using a supported product path: Brave version 1.87 or later on Android, Brave Playlist on a supported platform, or a signed-in Premium account in a YouTube mobile app. Then check battery restrictions, media permissions, and whether the content is a Shorts video. Shorts do not support Premium background play.
“My downloaded video disappeared”

Playlist media can also be removed because it is managed inside Brave.

Premium removes ads served by YouTube, not a creator’s spoken sponsorship, inserted brand segment, promotional link, or merchandising placement. Those elements are part of the video or channel presentation and can remain.
How to make the decision
Start with the device where you watch most. If it is a desktop browser and you already prefer Brave, Shields addresses the immediate ad-blocking problem without changing your YouTube account. If it is a phone app, television, console, or a mixture of supported devices, Premium offers a more consistent account-level entitlement.
Next, separate listening from offline storage. Android Brave users should verify the 1.87 requirement and test their device’s background behavior. iOS users who want Brave-managed offline queues should check Playlist support. Anyone who needs downloads that are integrated with YouTube’s own app should use Premium, while understanding that those downloads expire or disappear when YouTube requires a new verification or loses the video’s rights.
Finally, check region, app, account, and content eligibility immediately before subscribing or relying on a trip’s offline library. YouTube’s benefits vary by location and video, Brave’s feature availability varies by platform and release channel, and both products can change as their software is maintained.
