For most people who want ads and trackers blocked by default without giving up broad compatibility with Chrome extensions, Brave is the strongest starting choice. Choose Chrome when your work depends on Google services or Chrome-specific behavior; choose Firefox if you want a non-Chromium engine on desktop or Android and prefer Mozilla’s privacy approach. None is the best fit for everyone: the answer changes with your devices, sites, and priorities.
How the three browsers differ
| Browser | Desktop and Android engine | iOS engine | Best-supported reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brave | Chromium | WebKit | Built-in ad and tracker blocking, with Chrome Web Store extension compatibility according to Brave. |
| Chrome | Chromium | WebKit | A practical fit for Google account workflows and sites that depend on Chrome-specific behavior. |
| Firefox | Firefox’s own engine, separate from Chromium | WebKit | Mozilla’s privacy approach and add-on ecosystem; on desktop and Android, it also offers an alternative to Chromium. |
Brave describes its desktop and Android browser as a Chromium fork and its iOS browser as built on Apple’s WebKit. Mozilla likewise describes Firefox for iOS as WebKit-based. That means the engine distinction matters most when choosing a desktop or Android browser, not when comparing these three on iPhone or iPad. See Brave’s platform description, Brave’s Chrome comparison, and Brave’s Firefox comparison.

Which browser is best for privacy by default?
Brave makes the clearest case for blocking ads and trackers without requiring setup: its Shields feature is on by default. Brave lists cross-site tracker and cookie blocking as well as fingerprinting protections among its features. These descriptions come from Brave, which has an interest in the comparison, rather than an independent ranking. Websites can also break when protections interfere with their scripts; if that happens, adjust Shields for that site rather than assuming all protection must be disabled everywhere. Details are in Brave’s feature comparison.
Mozilla says Firefox’s default privacy settings are stronger than Chrome’s and points to fingerprint blocking and optional ad-blocking add-ons. That is Mozilla’s own comparison, not an independent assessment. The practical distinction is that Firefox’s stated position includes optional add-ons, while Brave emphasizes built-in blocking enabled by default. See Mozilla’s Firefox–Chrome comparison.

Private browsing is not a substitute for tracker blocking. It mainly limits or clears data stored locally for a session; it does not prevent websites you visit from observing activity during that visit. Brave explains this distinction in its comparison FAQ.
Does Brave work with Chrome extensions?
Brave says Chrome Web Store extensions work in its desktop browser, making it a reasonable option if you want Chromium compatibility alongside its built-in blocking. Compatibility is not the same as a guarantee that every extension will behave identically in every browser or platform. Extensions also add software with their own permissions and privacy or security implications, so install only those you need and review the access they request. Brave’s compatibility and platform details are at Brave vs. Chrome.

Is Firefox slower than Chrome?
There is no universal answer established by the available comparison. Brave Research’s 2026 report measured browsers on macOS and reported mean page-load times of 4.4 seconds for Brave, 5.1 seconds for Chrome, and 5.3 seconds for Firefox. In the same vendor-run evaluation, Brave reported 44% less average CPU use, 28% less memory, 10% less energy per page load, 26% less inbound data, and 39% less outbound data than the competing browsers. These are Brave’s results under its own methodology, not an independent, cross-device verdict; Brave also excluded Safari because its test setup could not measure Safari equivalently. Treat the findings as one platform-specific data point, not a promise about your computer or workload. Read the methodology and qualifications in Brave Research’s performance report.

What do the mobile privacy test counts show?
A UK Competition and Markets Authority appendix reproduces PrivacyTests.org results retrieved on September 17, 2024. The figures are historical test counts, not a current all-purpose privacy score. The appendix also cautions that iOS has more unsupported tests than Android, so counts across those platforms are not directly equivalent.

| iOS | 78 | 35 |
The counts come from the CMA appendix’s September 2024 snapshot of PrivacyTests.org. They support a limited observation about those tests at that time; they should not be read as a complete measure of privacy or as a current ranking. See Appendix A: Browser comparison.
Does privacy protection also mean safer downloads?
No. Blocking trackers and protecting against malicious downloads are different jobs. Brave says its website Safe Browsing is enabled by default and comparable to Chrome and Firefox, but its documentation describes download protection as more limited and says Chrome and Firefox block more malicious files in practice. Brave’s protection also varies by platform: its help page says download protection is unavailable on mobile, and mobile Safe Browsing partly relies on operating-system services. On iOS, requests may involve Apple, Google, or Tencent depending on region and system behavior. See Brave’s Safe Browsing documentation.

Make the choice by your main priority
- Choose Brave if you want built-in ad and tracker blocking and value Chrome extension compatibility. Its performance and privacy advantages should be understood in light of the vendor-authored comparisons and dated test snapshot described above.
- Choose Chrome if a Google account workflow or Chrome-specific site behavior is central to your day. The available evidence does not compare integration quality across individual Google services.
- Choose Firefox if you want a non-Chromium engine on desktop or Android, or prefer Mozilla’s stated privacy approach and add-on ecosystem.
On iOS, do not choose among these browsers on the assumption that Firefox has a separate engine from Brave or Chrome: all three use WebKit there. On any platform, a site that misbehaves, a required extension, or a particular workplace policy may outweigh the general recommendation.

In an August 2026 update, Brave described WebGL and WebGPU fingerprinting protections in its release channels and said users can adjust or turn them off per site. Implementation can change by version and channel, so consult Brave’s update for the specifics rather than assuming every installation has identical controls.
