A stronger brand story can improve the chances that people—and search systems—understand what your business does and why its perspective is worth citing. Explain who you help, what problem you solve, and what evidence or experience makes your view distinctive. Then support that story with useful, accessible pages. There is no reliable formula that guarantees an AI-search mention: Google says that, for its search experience, optimizing for generative AI is still SEO.

What AEO visibility means for your brand story

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a common term for work intended to make a business easier to find or reference in answer-style search experiences. Google also uses the term generative engine optimization (GEO) for related efforts. Its guidance is that, from Google’s perspective, generative-AI search optimization remains SEO: Google Search Central’s guidance on AI features.

That makes a brand story useful as a foundation, not a special ranking switch. It should help a reader quickly understand the business, the people it serves, the knowledge it has, and the reason its point of view differs from a generic summary. Search visibility still depends on content being valuable and discoverable; a polished positioning statement alone cannot establish expertise or compel a mention.

Build a story from evidence, not slogans

Start with what your organization can substantiate. A useful story connects an audience’s real problem to your work and the knowledge gained from doing it. It should distinguish current proof from future ambition, rather than presenting the latter as an established result.

#1 Best Overall

Identify the audience and problem

Describe the specific people or organizations you serve and the problem they are trying to solve. “We help small clinics manage appointment reminders” is more informative than “We make business better.” The details should be true of the business, not merely sound like a market position.

Find the first-hand knowledge

Look for insights that come from actual work: recurring customer questions, implementation lessons, documented outcomes, original analysis, or informed perspectives from people who do the work. When you publish a result or a claim, explain what it is based on and avoid implying that one example proves a universal outcome.

Rank #2

State the difference clearly

Explain what you do differently and why that difference matters to the audience. A distinct perspective may be a method, a focus on a particular customer need, or a well-supported disagreement with common practice. It is not enough to assert that the brand is “leading,” “trusted,” or “innovative” without showing the basis for those descriptions.

Turn the story into useful pages

Use the story to guide what you publish, not to repeat a slogan on every page. Create material that answers actual reader questions with relevant detail, examples, and evidence. Google’s people-first content guidance recommends making content for people rather than primarily to gain search rankings. It identifies trust as the most important part of E-E-A-T, while clarifying that E-E-A-T itself is not a specific ranking factor.

Make the story easy to understand and find

Keep the brand’s explanation consistent across relevant pages: what it offers, who it is for, and what claims its evidence supports. Pages should be accessible to search engines and organized so readers can find the details behind the headline. Good technical foundations make useful content discoverable; they do not substitute for it.

Use structured data where it accurately describes page content and supports ordinary search features. Google does not require special AI schema or an llms.txt file for its generative search features. Structured data can still be useful in broader SEO when it makes a page eligible for rich results. Google’s current AI features guidance covers what it does and does not require.

What to avoid when pursuing AI-search mentions

  • Thin summaries: Rewriting existing material without adding evidence, experience, analysis, or a useful perspective gives readers little reason to choose your page.
  • Publishing at scale for its own sake: Google cautions against mass-producing content mainly to attract search visits and against writing to a supposed preferred word count. Let the question and the useful answer determine the page.
  • Artificial mentions: Do not manufacture brand references or present unsupported endorsements as evidence. Google’s AI guidance warns against inauthentic mentions.
  • Keyword stuffing: Repeating AEO-related phrases does not make an unclear or unhelpful story credible.
  • Promises of guaranteed visibility: No editorial or technical change can guarantee that an answer engine will cite, mention, or rank a brand.

These cautions follow Google’s AI features guidance and people-first content guidance. A practical way to review proposed work is to ask whether it is useful and original, supported by evidence or genuine experience, clearly presented and technically accessible, and measurable after publication. This is a working checklist, not a Google scoring system.

Measure discovery and give changes time

Before changing pages, record a baseline using the search reporting available to your site. After publishing, monitor ordinary search performance and, where available, Search Console’s Generative AI performance report for how people discover content through Google’s generative AI features. Use what you observe to identify pages or questions that merit improvement; do not treat an increase or absence of mentions as proof by itself that the brand story is strong or weak.

Search changes can take from hours to months to be reflected. Google’s SEO Starter Guide recommends waiting a few weeks before assessing whether a change has had a beneficial effect, and notes that no change guarantees a visible result. Make deliberate revisions, allow time for them to be reflected, and compare results against the baseline rather than promising a particular timeline or uplift.
