Thermal-paper receipts can transfer bisphenol A (BPA) through the skin, and a small human study found that BPA from a brief skin exposure remained detectable in urine longer than BPA from a dietary dose. But that study did not show that receipts account for most BPA detected in people. For the general public, diet is still considered the main exposure route; receipt handling may be more relevant for some retail workers.
Can BPA from a receipt get into your body?
Yes. In a controlled human experiment, six men handled simulated receipts containing isotope-labeled BPA for five minutes. Researchers later detected the labeled chemical in participants’ urine, demonstrating that BPA from thermal paper can be absorbed through skin under the study conditions. The experiment was small and used simulated exposure, so it does not establish how much BPA an average person absorbs from ordinary shopping. Liu and Martin’s 2017 study examined how the chemical moved through the body, not the share of population exposure caused by receipts.

What did the receipt study actually find?
Participants were monitored for 48 hours after handling the simulated receipt and for 7.5 hours through serum testing. One week later, they received a labeled BPA dose orally for comparison. After the dietary dose, labeled BPA in urine peaked within five hours and cleared within 24 hours. After skin exposure, cumulative urinary excretion rose over two days; half the participants still had detectable labeled BPA in urine after a week. One participant who received extended follow-up had detectable labeled BPA for nine days.

That is a comparison of measured time courses in this experiment—not evidence that the exposure caused illness, nor an estimate of how much BPA in the population comes from receipts.

Do receipts explain most BPA detected in people?
That claim is not established by the study. It had six male participants and was designed to compare pharmacokinetics after skin and dietary exposure; it was not a representative survey or a source-apportionment study. It did not calculate what percentage of BPA detected in people came from receipts.
A 2017 Chemistry World report connected the headline idea to the researchers’ reasoning about BPA detected in people who had been fasting. Lead author Jonathan Martin said that if diet were dominant, “we should find lower BPA in individuals who have been fasting.” That observation motivated consideration of non-dietary sources; it did not identify receipts as the source of most BPA or measure their contribution.

How strong is the evidence for receipt exposure at work?
Occupational studies suggest thermal paper can be relevant for some workers, but the findings do not reduce to a reliable dose per receipt or a universal effect.
NHANES analysis of occupational exposure
A 2016 analysis of U.S. NHANES data found a geometric mean urinary BPA concentration of 5.45 μg/L among women with potential occupational thermal-paper exposure, compared with 2.16 μg/L among women with unlikely occupational exposure. It found no statistically significant occupation-associated difference among men. The authors said thermal paper should be considered when estimating aggregate BPA exposure. These are associations, not proof that receipts caused the difference or a measure of the population-wide share attributable to them. The NHANES analysis provides the study details.

Cashiers compared with controls
A separate occupational biomonitoring study sampled 90 cashiers and 44 controls. Median total urinary BPA was 8.92 μg/L among cashiers and 3.54 μg/L among controls. The researchers found no correlation between urinary BPA concentration and the number of thermal receipts handled, and no significant increase in free BPA among cashiers. This supports a qualified conclusion: receipt handling may contribute to exposure, but receipt counts alone do not predict an individual’s urinary BPA level. The study record describes the comparison.
Simulated receipt handling
A 2014 simulation study observed increases in urinary BPA after volunteers handled receipts for two hours without gloves; concentrations declined by 24 hours. The authors noted the small volunteer sample as a limitation. This supports transfer under the tested conditions, not a population estimate. The study abstract reports the findings.

How does receipt exposure compare with diet?
The 2022 HBM4EU report identifies diet as the expected primary exposure route for the general public, largely through bisphenols migrating from food and drink containers and packaging. It also describes thermal paper as a source of relatively high dermal exposure, with greater relevance for retail workers. In other words, the longer urinary detection observed after a controlled skin exposure does not mean receipts are the main source for most people: the study measured persistence after a dose, while the report assesses expected exposure routes across populations. The HBM4EU report sets out that broader assessment.
Are receipts BPA-free in the EU?
Not necessarily. The HBM4EU report states that the EU has restricted BPA in thermal paper under REACH since 2020, with a migration limit of 0.02% by weight. It also notes that BPA has largely been replaced by BPS in European thermal paper. This is a regional, dated regulatory description—not a guarantee about every receipt in the EU, and not a claim that all receipts worldwide are BPA-free. The report does not establish that substitutes such as BPS are harmless.

What should readers take away?
- BPA can transfer from thermal paper through skin under experimental conditions.
- In a small study of six men, labeled BPA from a brief skin exposure remained detectable in urine longer than after a labeled dietary dose.
- That experiment did not measure the fraction of BPA in the general population attributable to receipts.
- Occupational findings suggest receipts can matter for some workers, but they do not support a simple exposure amount per receipt.
- Diet is considered the expected main exposure route for the general public, while thermal paper is a more relevant dermal source for retail workers.
