BoxCast Spark is a single-input HEVC encoder for sending a finished camera or switcher feed to BoxCast for streaming. It is not a video switcher: in a multi-camera setup, connect it after the production switcher. Spark supports HDMI or SDI, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and streams up to 4K60, but it requires a paid BoxCast subscription. Whether it fits depends chiefly on your existing output connections, audio path, recording needs, and willingness to use BoxCast’s platform.
What BoxCast Spark does
Spark encodes one incoming video program and sends it to BoxCast. BoxCast describes it as an HEVC (H.265) encoder with a 4.3-inch touchscreen, live preview, customizable RGB status ring, audio level controls, an onscreen network speed test, scheduling and multistreaming automation, BoxCast Flow transport, and microSD backup recording. Its advertised maximum streaming format is 4K60. These are manufacturer-published features, not independent performance-test results. BoxCast Spark HEVC Touchscreen Encoder
The device does not choose between cameras or create a multi-camera program. For multiple cameras, make the production decisions in a switcher and feed Spark the switcher’s finished program output. BoxCast’s compatible video resolutions and frame rates

Setup: connect Spark and run a test
What comes in the box
BoxCast’s setup guide lists a 12V power adapter, clip-on stand, and clip-on wall mount. The unit is also tripod- and VESA-compatible. Allow about 20–30 seconds for power-on, then complete the on-screen onboarding on first use. Getting Started with Spark, BoxCast Support Center, June 17, 2026
Connect the signal path
- Connect the network. Use Ethernet where practical; BoxCast recommends it for stability. Wi-Fi is supported if a wired connection is not available.
- Connect video. Use the HDMI or SDI input that matches your Spark version and the output from your camera or switcher. With a multi-camera production, connect the final program output from the switcher.
- Connect audio if needed. Audio embedded in HDMI or SDI can travel with the video. If audio is separate, connect the appropriate analog input and verify signal level and cabling against your mixer’s output.
- Power on and finish onboarding. Follow the prompts on Spark’s touchscreen.
Run the initial Quick Test
- Log in to BoxCast Dashboard and open Schedule.
- Choose Quick Test and select Spark as the source.
- Start the test broadcast and allow roughly 30–45 seconds for the encoder to configure.
- Check the result inside the dashboard. The test broadcast is visible there only.
For a useful diagnostic, send the real program feed rather than a black screen, color bars, or a slideshow; BoxCast warns that those sources can make diagnostics look worse than the actual system performance.

Video resolution, audio, and local recording
Video formats and 4K
BoxCast advertises streaming up to 4K60. Its compatibility guide lists supported input resolutions up to 2160p (3840 × 2160) at 60 fps and supported streaming formats. Spark automatically chooses a streaming resolution based on the input and available bandwidth, according to BoxCast. For exact input compatibility, check the current resolution and frame-rate guide against the camera or switcher format before an event.
There is an important 4K trade-off: Spark cannot stream and record locally at 4K60 at the same time. If simultaneous local backup recording is essential, account for that limit when choosing the show format. BoxCast compatible video resolutions and frame rates

Audio connections
Spark can use audio embedded in its HDMI or SDI video input. Its specifications also list balanced stereo analog audio on two ¼-inch TRS jacks and unbalanced stereo input on 3.5mm. BoxCast’s audio guidance says the input signal must be 48 kHz. Spark Technical Specifications · Connecting Audio Sources to Spark Encoder, BoxCast Support Center, March 6, 2025
For a mixer with XLR outputs feeding the balanced inputs, BoxCast recommends two balanced XLR-female-to-¼-inch-TRS-male cables, one per left and right channel. It advises against converting XLR directly to 3.5mm. Match the cable and signal level to the mixer’s actual output rather than assuming every XLR connection is interchangeable.

microSD backup recording
BoxCast specifies a Class I microSD card with at least 16GB capacity, formatted as ext4 or exFAT. Those are the documented requirements; BoxCast’s cited material does not establish a particular card model as recommended. Remember that local recording cannot run at the same time as 4K60 streaming. - Production role: Spark is suitable as an encoder after a camera or completed switcher output, not as a replacement for a multi-camera switcher.
- Connector fit: Choose HDMI or SDI based on outputs already available in your production system and the cabling installed at the venue.
- Network: Ethernet is BoxCast’s recommended option for stability; dual-band Wi-Fi is supported where wiring is impractical.
- Recording and format: Confirm the required input format in BoxCast’s compatibility guide and plan around the inability to record locally while streaming at 4K60.
- Platform and total cost: Budget for the hardware plus the required paid BoxCast subscription, and verify current price, variant availability, and plan terms with BoxCast.
BoxCast’s January 29, 2024 launch announcement describes the company’s goals and features, but it is company-authored launch material rather than independent testing. Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| No picture or an unexpected format | Verify Spark’s HDMI/SDI version, the cable and the output format from the camera or switcher. | Compare the source format with BoxCast’s supported video resolutions and frame rates; verify that the switcher is sending its finished program feed. |
| Audio is missing or poor | Check whether audio is embedded or connected separately, whether the input is 48 kHz, and whether analog cabling and signal level match the mixer output. | For balanced stereo from XLR mixer outputs, follow BoxCast’s two XLR-female-to-¼-inch-TRS-male cable guidance; avoid direct XLR-to-3.5mm conversion. |
| Network test or stream is unstable | Check network connectivity and available bandwidth; Wi-Fi conditions can vary. | Use Ethernet if possible, as BoxCast recommends it for stability, and use the touchscreen network speed test as a check. |
| Quick Test takes time or looks poor | Allow about 30–45 seconds for configuration and inspect the test in the dashboard, where it is visible. | Send the actual program signal; black, bars, or a slideshow may make diagnostics look lower than they are. |
| Cannot stream 4K60 and keep a local recording | This is a documented simultaneous-use limitation, not necessarily a fault. | Choose a workflow or format that fits the recording requirement, or do not expect local recording during 4K60 streaming. |
