Choose the JBL Xtreme 4 if Auracast support, an included shoulder strap, and JBL’s longer headline battery estimate matter more. Both are rated IP67, and the published specifications do not establish a sound-quality winner between them.
At a glance: how the specifications compare
| Feature | Bose SoundLink Max | JBL Xtreme 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer-stated battery life | Up to 20 hours; Bose says up to 3 hours at maximum volume. Bose specifications and Bose charging guidance | Up to 24 hours; JBL says playback time depends on volume and audio content. JBL product page and JBL specification sheet |
| Weight | 4.9 lb. Bose product page | 4.63 lb. JBL product page |
| Dimensions | 10.42 × 4.73 × 4.13 in (width × height × depth). Bose product page | 11.69 × 5.87 × 5.55 in (as listed). JBL product page |
| Dust and water rating | IP67. Bose product page | IP67. JBL product page |
| Bluetooth | Version 5.4. Bose specifications | Version 5.3. JBL product page |
| Wired input | 3.5 mm input listed. Bose specifications | Not identified in the cited JBL listing or specification sheet. |
| Speaker grouping | Bose lists Stereo and Party Mode pairing for two SoundLink Max speakers. Bose specifications | Auracast support and compatible JBL speaker linking are listed. JBL product page |
| Charging another device | USB-C input/output; Bose lists the ability to charge another device. Bose specifications | Power-bank function and USB-C in/out are listed. JBL specification sheet |
| Shoulder strap | Sold separately; Bose lists an included rope handle. Bose product page | Shoulder strap listed in the box; confirm regional package contents. JBL product page |
The battery figures are manufacturer claims, not results from a matched head-to-head test. Bose’s support guidance says conditions affect performance, and JBL says playback varies with volume and audio content. Do not treat the four-hour difference between the headline estimates as a guaranteed real-world gap.

Which one is easier to carry?
JBL’s listed weight is 0.27 lb lower: 4.63 lb versus 4.9 lb for Bose. But the Xtreme 4 is also larger in each listed dimension, while the SoundLink Max is shorter and narrower. Weight alone therefore does not tell you which will fit your bag or feel more manageable.
The carrying setup may be the more useful distinction: JBL lists a shoulder strap in the box, whereas Bose sells its SoundLink Max shoulder strap separately and lists a rope handle. Check the product package for your region, and verify the exact strap’s compatibility before buying an accessory.

How do battery life and charging compare?
Bose SoundLink Max
Bose lists up to 20 hours of battery life, but that headline figure is not the whole story. Its support page states: “At maximum volume, the battery lasts up to 3 hours.” Actual performance varies with conditions, so plan around your listening volume and use rather than assuming the maximum-life estimate applies to every session. See Bose’s charging guidance.
JBL Xtreme 4
JBL lists up to 24 hours of music playback and 3.5 hours for charging. Its specification sheet qualifies playback time as dependent on volume and audio content. Those are JBL’s published figures, not directly comparable test results against Bose. See the JBL product page and JBL specification sheet.

Using either speaker as a power bank
Both manufacturers list a way to charge another device from the speaker: Bose specifies USB-C output, and JBL lists a power-bank function and USB-C output. Using that feature draws on the speaker’s battery, so it trades listening time for phone or other-device charging.

What do the ports and wireless features mean in practice?
The clearest Bose-specific advantage is a listed 3.5 mm input. It gives you a documented wired connection option for a compatible source. The cited JBL product listing and specification sheet do not identify a wired audio input, so do not assume the Xtreme 4 offers the same connection.

- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
Bose lists Bluetooth 5.4 for SoundLink Max; JBL lists Bluetooth 5.3 for Xtreme 4. The version numbers alone do not establish better sound quality or guarantee a particular compatibility advantage for your devices.
For multi-speaker use, Bose lists Stereo and Party Mode pairing for two SoundLink Max speakers. JBL lists Auracast support and linking with compatible JBL speakers. These are brand and feature-specific listings; they do not establish that Bose and JBL speakers can be grouped together.

Are both speakers waterproof?
Both manufacturers list an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. That shared rating is a useful point of comparison, but it is not a reason to play either speaker underwater or operate it while wet. Follow each manufacturer’s guidance for exposure, cleaning, and charging rather than treating the rating as permission for every wet-use scenario.

No sound-quality winner is established by the cited specifications. JBL publishes different RMS output figures for AC and battery operation—2 × 30 W woofers plus 2 × 20 W tweeters in AC mode, and 2 × 20 W woofers plus 2 × 15 W tweeters in battery mode—but electrical ratings are not a direct sound-quality comparison with Bose. Choose between these models on the documented features that fit your setup, or compare them in person using familiar music if sound is your deciding factor.
